Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on Daddy's Drinking

I think back on those early days when Daddy and me would just kick back and shoot the breeze –  we’d  talk about grownup things. We might tackle some CNN-type global issues or we’d talk about all the layoffs down at the outdoor-carpeting factory, or he might just open up some beers – and we’d put in some Jim Croce tapes, sing along or just listen close to the words.

This was before we knew Daddy had a drinking problem. Daddy and I were the last to know. In fact, I don’t think it was even that much of a problem to us.

Now, he’s in a 12-Step Program. I’m proud of him, because I am sure he would rather be drinking.

He said he stopped drinking for me. But frankly, I miss those times when he was a little high. Does anyone know what I mean?

BlueCG…..re state fair…..I go every year….I just live down the road from the capitol…..one of those downstaters I am. Yep there are a lot of fried foodies there. Last year there were french fried snicker bars. Oh my ick. But the best is Culler’s french fries with vinegar. This year they are $2.50….just saw something on the news about them. And you can’t go to the fair without buying some McMeen’s taffy….the best there is and much better than Sutter’s! It’s been a while since I went to the DuQuoin state fair….but I do love the shady fair grounds there….many more areas to cool off than the capitol city fair grounds. Wow I am impressed on being production secretary. The fair really does have some good entertainment….although in the last couple of years some of it was not so good. Cause you aren’t there any longer, maybe???????? LOL Peace and Goodwill…..doll

Little Fefe ~ There is nothing wrong with being too idealistic. It is just your dreams sparkling.
Yes, my little EA (e-xceptionally a-ttentive or a-mazing) dearie. I do know what you “mean”.. but then I realized there’s two sides to every little habit; when you become accustomed to the one side it becomes difficult to see the habit any other way. My mommy told me there’s many different reasons why people like the “drink” but a few summers ago I saw firsthand (family friend) how it causes even the most intelligent, responsible and respected individuals to spiral out of control; causing very dangerous situations, if not fatal. I then realized that this “drinking problem” was actually a medical condition; although it is incurable it is very treatable and with effort it is highly successful. It’s a little easier these days to seek treatment — but there’s many types of “o-holics” in society and it’s vital for them to realize it is important take care of themselves before their habit takes over them. Not to get preachy here… but it’s nice when have an extra pair of eyes looking out for us. Angels walk amongst - I call them family and friends. There’s always at least one exceptionally amazing person present in your life, but, also, you can be your very own source of inspiration. However, some of us can only tolerate reality in very small doses - I for sure. It’s nice to retreat or idealize - as long as it is done carefully and moderately. You have a good lil’ heart EA, thanks for continuing to share it with your friends on WoW ~Little Fefe

Little Fefe, Two things: First, “some of us can only tolerate reality in very small doses “—AMEN TO THAT! And isn’t it strange how life/the world has “improved”? For all of our “progress,” it seems that a lot of things are worse than ever. As Aunt Jane would say, “Everything has become debased, even hippness.” For a lot of folks I know, dealing with today’s reality means “better living through chemistry.” Second, “also, you can be your very own source of inspiration.” I love this! I’m finding this out, slowly but surely, although a little late in life. Hey, better late than never, right? Some of us who had rampant addictions and the like running through the bloodline didn’t always receive what they needed as kids. Now, the “sistas are doin’ it for themselves.” And on that point, I have been, of late, beginning to study the Tao and Taoism—I love it, and it seems to help. Anyone else study Eastern philosophy?

Hehe Thanks very much Serena! Which btw is such a fantastic name! I have always been interested in self enlightenment or self inspiration because I learned if I would like things to be better it’s important to play an active role ensuring this. I was lucky to gravitate to examples from early on. It is interesting how moments/interests in your life play out. Examples: Read Jane’s “Search” at 13. It had a profound impact on my life and educational choices - which still continues to this day. Love and cherish such plays as The Miracle Worker, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Little Foxes, etc. Been inspirationally taken aback by Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” Marvel at feminist scholar Marilyn French, and the alike. (Too many to list) I too have recently been exploring taoism and eco-feminism among several other “isms”. The only thing I worry about is the fact the world is so vast - it has endless capabilities and choices - but our time here is relatively short. I agree with you very much - it is NEVER to late to learn, explore and discover the inner you. As far as I am concerned we do not do this enough - if we don’t know who we are and feel appreciative and comfortable then how can we expect others to?

Dear Edith Ann, I understand what you mean. My daddy was a drinker when I was young, too. Well, he drank until I was grown, if we are going to be honest here. There were lots of times when he would come in on Friday nights and have a drink and he would just laugh and laugh and dance with me or my sister or my mom, and it was so much fun. But there were also the bad nights when he would come in, fix a drink and take the bottle and go and sit in the living room in the dark and drink, and listen to sad music. My mom would sometimes find his hidden bottles and pour them out and there would be a BIG fight! My mom always told me though that I should never be mad at him because of his drinking because it was a disease, and he was sad about things he saw when he was fighting in Germany in World War II. I never missed his drinking because he would still dance with me even when he was sober. Maybe you can talk to your dad and get him to do the same fun things with you now that he is sober. Be happy for him that he stopped drinking. Be even happier that he isn’t mean when he drinks. My friend had a dad who got mean when he drank, but that’s another story for another time. Take care of yourself … people love you! Rita

Edith, would you be willing to do your very own photo essay on what it is like to be a kid or a day in the life of EA? What do ya think? I know you may not have access to a camera but perhaps you can share some of your artistic creations…do you think you could fit it into your busy schedule?
