Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on Daddy's Drinking

I think back on those early days when Daddy and me would just kick back and shoot the breeze –  we’d  talk about grownup things. We might tackle some CNN-type global issues or we’d talk about all the layoffs down at the outdoor-carpeting factory, or he might just open up some beers – and we’d put in some Jim Croce tapes, sing along or just listen close to the words.

This was before we knew Daddy had a drinking problem. Daddy and I were the last to know. In fact, I don’t think it was even that much of a problem to us.

Now, he’s in a 12-Step Program. I’m proud of him, because I am sure he would rather be drinking.

He said he stopped drinking for me. But frankly, I miss those times when he was a little high. Does anyone know what I mean?

Has anyone else noticed that the Tiffany watch in the top left corner is ticking and it changes time when you log on….. Edith, how do you think it knows what time it is in my house?

Hey Josie. Yep! tick … tick … AND, I personally like this watch better than the last one—it’s probably the light blue, my favorite color.

I don’t get the watch any more, or if I do, I can’t see it ……….. it took me nearly three weeks to notice it in the beginning ……

Hi Linda. Didn’t I see another blog mention that you are in Texas? I hope everything is okay there, and “Hello Dolly” wasn’t too bad. Dolly sent a few rain bands over my way on the Florida coast. I certainly hope that the Gulf of Mexico—or anyone else for that matter—does NOT get any more storms this year (wishful thinking, I know). I use to get so excited as a kid when a hurricane was coming—mostly, I think, because it meant that school would be out for a few days. As an adult, it isn’t funny or fun anymore. Take Care!!!

Hi Serena! Yes, I’m in Corpus Christi. We received 6 inches of rain here at the house and 45+ mph winds that will continue to blow throughout the day. My hubby deployed this morning with his team to the Rio Grande Valley for recovery efforts. The hotels on South Padre had windows bursting, not from debris, but from wind pressure. They have been evacuating some via boats. On the mainland in Brownsville and west of there, flooding is becoming a great concern. In Norther Mexico, their Army has been in action since last evening. Keep them all in your prayers.

Jane, I was reading a couple of the other blogs about Kay Ryan—isn’t she great!? I’m just curious, how does someone go about having poetry published in a magazine that is the caliber of “The New Yorker”? Is it “invitation only” or do you just keep submitting stuff and pray that something is accepted?
