Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on Dialing 9-1-1

There should be a nine-one-one and a half — an alternative nine-one-one.

Where you could call in for help and you get to decide if it’s an emergency, not the operator — for a change.

Then they’d just have to believe it and send help.

I want to know why you are a frog? Did I miss something along the way? If someone kisses you with feeling what will you turn into?

You are right Edith Ann - you should be able to decide if it is an emergency. When you are six years old and your cat is stuck in a tree … darn it - that is an emergency, thank you very much. And that bully next door that throws water balloons at you every time you try and leave your yard - he should be picked up by the police. They should have a 455.5 number just for kids.

Dear Edith Ann, You are absolutely correct! With all the “authorities” in life that have control over what you should do and say—not to mention tell you how you’re suppose to feel—YOU should get to decide if it’s an emergency, not the operator. Who knows you better than YOU! As Holden Caulfield would say, “they are all a bunch of damn phonies!” What do they know?

In defense of 911 I have to share my experience. When I fell over one morning, unconscious, my husband called 911 and they were there in minutes..One big firetruck, one ambulance and several firemen and MTs. I came around a bit and saw all of those big boots, but could not raise my head up enugh or focus in to know who all these boots belonged to. They whisked me off to the ER where I was admitted to the hospital..where the care and attention I got was first rate. Im now recovered and very grateful to the 911 folks for such a prompt response and appropriate action. I don’t know whats happening in your area but I know from personal experience whats happening where I live.

What was the matter with you that you fell over like that? Am glad you are recovered, but it sounds mighty scary. I mean, one minute we are bending over to tie up the trash and the next we see big boots.

phyllis, that’s one of the side effects of detrol and may have other causes. someone recently told me how she kept falling down for no reason and couldn’t get up again till she missed a few doses of detrol.

Miss Darling Edith Ann, I can see your future! When you grow all up, you will be an operator - don’t diss the job. I think you may even work at the White House - can you imagine?

Good idea, Sabrina! I was thinking about another White House job for little Edith Ann, though. It doesn’t start with an “o” like operator. It starts with the next letter - P.

Great to hear from all my wow friends. Good input as always. I am learning so much from all your comments. I feel so lucky to have you all interested in me. My mom works in security at the airport and I was the only one at home when someone tried to break into our house. I called 911 but they gave me a hard time because they had a record of me calling when a pizza I’d ordered failed to be delivered. so I had to go hide under the bed. The burglar got in and i could hear him shuffling around. He left without taking anything. I guess he didn’t see anything he liked. He made a big mess of the house so I called 911 and asked them to please send some one to help me fiix up the house before mom came home and got all upset. but they didn’t help my out that time either Mom did come home and almost had a heat attack but I didn’t call 911 for help cause by then they knew my voice. so I just calmed her down myself. Love to all, Edith .

What a great story! I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, so I’ll just do both. You make my heart happy, Edith. No small feat. Especially when you have long toes.

Oh, no, you mean we aren’t supposed to call 911 when the pizza doesn’t come? Yikes …
