Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on Finger Painting

What about this: You have this cut on your thumb. You think it’s just about healed. You think to yourself, “Hey, I feel like doing some finger painting.” So I started painting a big, red brick house.

Then, suddenly, you feel a sting in your thumb. I look down and see I have mixed blood from my cut into my painting! I almost threw up.

Then, Ms. Taylor, my art teacher comes by and she says, “Edith, you have outdone yourself. The red practically jumps off the page. It’s vibrant. It’s alive.” I said nothing. She gave me four stars and hung it up.

I just hope it won’t form a scab.

Jeez Edith, have you been putting things in your ears? Great paintings are made with splash and inflection. Not slash and infection.

Dear Edith Ann, do not worry just when you are done go and wash your little hands with soap and water then dry it with a piece of toilet paper or paper towels. But it sounds like you really put you heart into your paintings.

Edith Ann, fingerpainting is dangerous, so you need to take care of your hands! But after you carefully wash and dry your hands (and clean under the fingernails!) ask Aunt Jane if you could use her computer to look at this website: http://www.fingerpainter.com/ It’s got some really very nice paintings by a lady named Mary Ann Brandt, who was a finger painter even though she was a grownup. I think you would really like them, and they would give you some new ideas for paintings that your teacher would also like without bleeding on them.

This video is really really fun, Edith. It’s about painting fingers, not finger painting, but maybe it will also give you some new ideas for paintings. http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-us&tab=soapbox&vid=17f50399-00c7-…

I hit your link … who is the artist doing the painting of the fingers? The gator is the best … Mugsy, what is your favorite painted hand in this video?

I liked all of them. I think Edith will like them, too. But Edith, if you paint your hands, be sure not to put them on Aunt Lily’s fancy desk because she would probably have a fit.

Edith Ann, I think it would be neat if it developed a scab. Kind of like a Doren Grey picture of your thumb. Kewl! As the picture grew a scab - your thumb would heal.

A finger painting ?! … and like the work of sister Frida Kahlo there is the paint and the blood and spirit of the damn thing all rolled into one wonderful thing … never really accepting the conventional boundary of the frame.

I don’t think we’re supposed to use bad language around Edith. It will give her even more ideas.
