Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann's Mission Statement

When the wOw women asked me to join their website as Kid Commentator, at first, I said, “No.” I just didn’t’ think I could fit it into my busy schedule.

Then, when they said I could just write down anything I thought of as I went about juggling my busy schedule, I said I’d have to think about it.

When they said, “Just write down your thoughts and send them to us” — that’s what I do anyway. I’ve been writing down my thoughts ever since I got my first computer at age three. Only, now I use the spell checker so my thoughts make more sense.

I hope you read my blogs and please email me and give your thoughts or you can ask advice which I like to give. Kids, parents, humanity of all types are invited to take part. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Anything goes. Just don’t tell me what to think.

Your friend
Edith Ann

Congratulations, Edith Ann! I think each of us should have a mission statement. It helps clear the mind or the desk, depending on which is more messy. I am going to follow your example and try to write up a mission statement for myself and my messy desk. I don’t have any need of advice right now [although my friends would disagree], but yours is a kind offer, and I am sure I will take you up on it in the future.

Edith Ann You gave me the best advice today about the spell checker. Now I know how to make my thoughts make sense, have the spell checker lady check them and fix them up. Is that Mrs. Mordigan from the 5th grade. She was pretty good at spelling. She didn’t draw so good though.

Hi Edith Ann, I’m so very glad that writing down your thoughts and sending them to us fits in your busy schedule. You’re such a smart little girl. I was thinking that I needed somebody to make me be less of a big girl, so I went to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and asked for a kid to hang out with. Seeing your really cool kid thinking, got me thinking, so I gave my little brother a blank book. I’m hoping he starts writing cool stuff like you. I really like you, Edith Ann, like so many other people.

OK, Edith Ann - you asked for it! I have a question for you that has been bothering me for a long time. Maybe you have an answer. How come my mind feels like I’m still a kid and my body feels like I’m closing in at about 200 miles an hour on 70? *Most of my friends feel the same way.) We’d all appreciate any ideas you might have. Thank you very, very much. Your friend, Maurine p.s. Never in a month of Sundays (or any other day of the week) would I want to tell you what to think!

I was trying to get my aunt Mugsy to play with me tonight but she was busy and grumpy and told me to go play with you, Edith Ann. I knew she really meant it because she won’t ever let me touch her computer. Except when she can’t figure out how to use it. She says you live in Los Angeles with your aunts, and you get to be on television. I got to be on television once, but I don’t think it was a very good thing, and I promised never ever to paint the windows of the firetruck again. The best part was when they let me ride in the truck and do the siren. So do you want to play or what?

Hey MJP, You should try harder to get your auntie M to play with you, even if she IS busy and grumpy. She’s real funny. Sometimes when I was grumpy, she made me laugh and laugh. Maybe if you’re a real good girl, you can talk her into playing with you AND Edith Ann. Two giggly girls are funner than one!

Mugsy Jr. - I know I shouldn’t laugh about your painting the fire truck windows, but here I am, on the floor, laughing so hard my cat is worried. Mo

I wish I could play with you but I am totally swamped today. A twister or something came in the night and blew down my treehouse! And the tree it was built in. I just wanted to weep. So I did. Everything at Home Depot has gone up in price, I fear. Plus the tree itself…well let’s just say, a tree hugger (like me) couldn’t hug this tree without getting deep splinters all over. You can get supplies at Home Depot to rebuild a treehouse but where do you go to rebuild a tree? I guess I could go to God, but I feel my problems are too little to bother God with. I’m afraid I’d be as Grumpy as your Aunt Mugsy so go play with some other kid. Edith

Dear Edith, I think everyone on WoW should plant a tree today—in memory of your treehouse tree. What do you think? Trees are getting harder to find these days. I think they may become extinct and that makes me very sad!

Thanks, Serena, for your thought about everyone on Wow planting a tree in memory of my tree house. But I very much doubt that will happen. I can’t even get Aunt Jane’s photo replaced with mine,so I don’t think people will go to the touble of planting a tree for me. But it’s a very nice thought and I love you for it. Edith.

I love you too Edith! XOXO And, I’ll still plant a tree, even if everyone else is too busy. However, you’ll have to wait a while before we can build a treehouse in it! Who knows, maybe by that time Home Depot won’t be so expensive!

Hi Everybody, Edith here, although I’m using Aunt Jane’s puter so her photo may show up so don’t be jarred or confused. Maurine,I wish I could help you keep young but Im too busy trying to grow up. My problem is, I look too young so when I act grown up, nobody seems to take me seriously, except my Web pals here on WoW. This is from Edith no matter photo or name tech puts up. Edith

You can get supplies at Home Depot to rebuild the tree house but where do you go to rebuild the tree?” The above question has been selected to appear as one of the ten questions on the next quarterly exam to students in our Philosophy Class 101 and one half. The question may be answered literally or metaphorically. You will have 5 minutes to complete your answer. Good luck. A.B.C, Dean of the University of all Things Pertaining to Whatever.

Rebuilding a tree is so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o easy. You find the seeds from the tree that died if you can. If you can’t, you go get some at the store. You put them in dirt and then you put water on them and wait. Pretty soon, they start to come up. You have to look at them every day and ask them if they need something. Then pretty soon they need to be in bigger pots, so you get the grownups and everybody helps you get some more dirt and you very very carefully take the little trees and put them in bigger pots. After a while, they go outside and get put in the ground. You have to sometimes take a big stick and put it in the ground and tie the tree to it so it stands up straight. You can also buy trees that are this old if you are in a hurry and put them in the ground instead. Be careful not to put the tree too near the house because they can get really big. Then you wait and hope the weather is good for trees. For years. If it doesn’t rain for a long time, you have to put a lot of water on the trees so the roots get wet. You won’t be a kid when the tree is big enough for a tree house, but some other kid can use it. I’m sorry you can’t play, Edith, and I’m sorry about the tree house. You can play in mine sometime. Maybe we can go see the firetrucks. Bye.
