Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on a Wandering Mind

Has this ever happened to you?

You go over to the window to sharpen your pencil and something you see out the window grabs your mind and your entire pencil gets eaten up by the sharpener.

Then your teacher accuses you of not paying attention and, if you say, “How come I heard you say I wasn’t paying attention if I wasn’t paying attention?” She tells you “Don’t talk back to me,” instead of seeing that you had a good point … except on my pencil.

My Mom complains, too, when my mind wanders off, but I don’t know what to do about it. My mind has a mind of its own. It just goes away and does its own thing, and I have no say about it. I think sometimes it just needs a break from being cooped up in my busy brain.

Anyway, I guess I’m lucky that my mind has its own GPS system, because somehow it always finds its way back to me.

Hey, dear cyberchums, love to read your posts. I am very touched by the warmth and caring and connection on display here. I wonder how it happened that so many sensitive and intelligent people found their way here and so openly share thoughts and feelings in such loving ways. Edith’s little cybersandbox has become a very special place because of you. Jane

Jane, Like attracts like, I say. You and Lily are the best, so you’ve attracted those with hearts as big as both of yours.

Ms. Carol, I am happy that you are feeling better because you are always so nice, and you have so many good thoughts to write down. When I had the mumps, my mom said sometimes it’s good to be sick because you get the chance to close your eyes and shut the world out and just hear yourself inside. I like to go for walks with Aunt Mugsy when we don’t know where we are going. We found a table that was made for Catherine D. Medici yesterday. I don’t know who that is, but Aunt Mugsy got more excited than she normally is. She even took a picture. It had all kinds of colored stones in it, but I just knew the malachite, because I love love love malachite, but Aunt Mugsy knew all of them. Anyway, that’s what your mind is supposed to do when you’re sick, go find Catherine D. Medici’s table. I think that is what my mom said. Bye. Oh. Hi, Edith.

Hi - it’s Edith Ann, Mugsy Jr. and I just wonder if Harvard is like the school I go to. Are you like me and think the best part of the day is recess? I sure don’t want to go to a school where we can’t go on the slides and play in the mud — if we don’t get caught. I get caught sometimes, and Mrs. Peterson, she’s the principal, calls me in and I get soooooo scared as there are all these big people around. Usually my fingers are really dirty from the mud so I can’t say I didn’t do it . . and besides, Lily tells me that I should never lie as bad things will happen if I do. You know, sometimes at night when I am in bed, I wonder if a big lion is going to come in the window and bite me. Do you think that is one of the really bad things that happen to naughty girls??? I asked Lily and Jane if they knew what Vassar even was as I think even the name is funny. It sounds like - you know - one of those towns on the side of the cliff in the Medterian Sea - well, doesn’t it sort of? But they knew all about it and they nodded their heads like - well you know that look when they are thinking about something too wise for little girls to know about? But Lily said that if I ever get past first grade, we could maybe think about it - especially if you are going so I would have a friend? Do you have lots of friends, Mugsy Jr? Hey, how do you pronounce the Jr — cuz jrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sounds like what a mean cat might sound like, doncha think? But none of my girlfriends have picked a college yet, so would you be my friend and come over and play and you can tell me what fun things we can do there. I hope they have a water park, don’t you, I mean the ones with the real high ladders you have to climb to get to the top. I like those. But Mugsy, do you ever get scared when you get up there? Don’t tell - I mean ANYONE, but I think I am going to wet my pants - I mean my swimming suit - as I get afraid to slide down. But, but, maybe when we get old enough to go to Vassar, we will not be scared about so many things. Doya think? Mugsy, could you call me up maybe and come over and play today — you won’t believe the good hiding place I have behind the sofa where I keep my red M&Ms. Do you like the red ones? They are THE best! Please answer —— I like your name a lot! it’s funny!!!! Edith Ann

I like red M & M’s too. My mom once bought two big packages of M & M’s and I took all of the red ones out and ate them. Then I took the green one’s out and ate those. Then the yellow ones. The brown ones gave me a tummy ache when I tried eating those too. Next time I will save you some Edith Ann.

Jane, Did you see the post about Dolly Parton? Please tell me that this isn’t true.

Serena .
I am unpleasantly surprised that wOw would consider this as post-worthy. I would think that they wouldn’t want to perpetuate such a cruel rumor. I hadn’t even heard about it until I saw it on wOw.
