Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on Wishes

Some kids seem to know how to make their wishes come true. They have a knack for it or maybe they just know what wishes are likely to come true and they stick with them. It’s not like they can make their wishes come true, see; it’s just they’re more level-headed than me at knowing what to wish for.

I see now there’s a whole other way of wishing.

oh Edith, I am so glad to see you. Wishing is a tricky business. We can wish for many things and without action, our wishes may go unheard. It’s not that our wishes were unworthy…we just didn’t act on the open doors… or we wished for the wrong things. Wishes are not intentions…. and intentions are what we act upon.

Yo Josie River-Woman!
And then there are the wishes we wish, but we really think, that we don’t deserve to have them come true. There are stacks of reasons of undeservability, like little dams built across the paths where our dreams run. And then there is us, being afraid of our dreams and our power, fears that slip into the places where our wishes snap together. You know the snaps of our brains, that make stuff happen. So then the little snaps are all gummed up and the can’t really click together good. Course it doesn’t help at all if our ruby slippers are all scuffed up. Wishes need a good shine, a little polishing… some love

If wishes were horses, Beggars might ride; If turnips were watches, I would wear one by my side. An Old Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme

Phyllis, That’s a new one for me. I only know if ” Beggars were choosers”…or something like that… Is that a Nursery rhyme? Edith

I liked the one Dandy Don Meredith used one December night on Monday Night Football decades ago: “If ‘if’s & but’s’ were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas.”

How about this one … If wishes were horses, Beggars would ride; If wishes were fishes, We’d all have some fried.

Okay, I can’t help myself … one more before I leave the old lunch break. This one is from Melissa Etheridge’s “Brave and Crazy.” “If wishes were horses This beggar would ride I’d have my cake and eat it With a little on the side I’d never want for money I’d never want for friends I wouldn’t have to make excuses for the shape that I’m in”

Ok, I’ll throw in my hat. If wishes were horses then beggars would ride. If beggars were like us Oh what a surprise! We’d have to take time out and stop and see, If all the poor beggars lived better than we. Blame it on C A, she did it!

Edith, you can make your wishes come true. Write them down and then make a list of the things/actions you need to do to make your wish come true. Being wise is good, but we can look at others and see what actions they have taken to accomplish their goals. Their goals were once wishes. The list is a plan and as you follow the plan it will become clear the next step in the plan that needs to be taken. It is tricky, but you are a smart girl and you can do it. Start with one wish.

Thanks for responding to me, Edith Ann. I have been reading the other posts and I remember my grandmother making a wish with me with the wishbone. This has been fun to know what others think about wishes. Wishes are so special.

Deni- “There are stacks of reasons of undeliverability, like little dams built across the paths where our dreams run.”. I love that! Can I use that when helping artists overcome their fears?
