Lily Tomlin on Big Families: ‘We’re Going to Have to Start Polluting Mars’

Lily Tomlin

I’ve seen it written in information about overpopulation that "people are a good thing. Overpopulation isn’t."

Forget individual families. The human family is too big and getting bigger. There are too many of us humans on our planet and, unfortunately, even individually we are growing bigger. And the bigger the number and size, the more resources used and the more waste produced. We’re going to have to start polluting Mars or maybe shoot the waste into the sun and vaporize it. (Is that feasible? I may have just solved all our recycling challenges!) There are too many of our family members already living lives of bare substance. We need a global effort to reduce population and to develop sustainable energy sources. The future of any human family depends on it. Maybe.

This has been my point of view in recent years as well. I guess it’s considered quite cynical, but I find it downright REALISTIC. I don’t know, maybe I’m selfish, but I see no need for there to be yet ANOTHER one of us stuck in traffic, draining resources, using up tax-payers’ money, etc. At least not until all the orphans have been adopted FIRST, and the population has decreased to a more sustainable level. As a sidenote, I’ve found it quite useful to claim the existence of homosexuality as one of God’s/nature’s excuses for “population control”. I say, “If all 100% of us were meant to procreate, there’d be no room left on this planet for everyone. Just TRY to imagine our already-flailing economy (never mind those majority of countries who are even WORSE off!) if every single couple bred 2 or more children…” People tend to stop arguing with me once I take it to THAT level. Hah.

If all that extra population was more like you, Ms. Lily, I think it would be easier to put up with! Alas, not so. One thing that scientists have discovered about the rising population is that as human populations overrun their habitat and deplete resources, their average IQ drops as a population increases. (One estimate says the Global IQ will drop a full five points from 1950 to 2050.) And BTW, according to Leah Garchik of the SF Chronicle, the current campaign to contribute to Planned Parenthood in Gov. Palen’s name has raised over $750,000 for the organization, many of whom are first-time members.

Sweet comment, Mugsy … yeah to Ms. Lily clones… And yikes, I had never heard of that connection of IQ ./. population increase … (“One estimate says the Global IQ will drop a full five points from 1950 to 2050.”) … but having lived half of that time-frame, I feel quite certain for a time now that ‘the world’ seems to get ‘dumber and dumber’ … a cliche, but often even reading contemporary literature as compared to ‘classics’ seems to prove the point … maybe

Hasn’t our oxygen level decreased quite a bit as well in recent decades alone, as a result of all the CO2 emissions and other pollutants? (My human ecology professor said that once, but he was also a conspiracy theorist so there’s no telling.) Not getting enough oxygen to the brain surely has something to do with IQ lowering.

I mean about the Planned Parenthood donations. Let’s hope that keeps up.

Oh! My Favorite
Lily, I stand more firmly on a parent having the time, energy and mental fortitude to raise good citizens for the rest of us (which is what I said to Whoopi). And that includes teaching each of your children to respect and protect the planet and all the its inhabitants. (And, hey, let’s look into that blasting waste to burn on the sun’s surface. We waste at least as much trying to bail out crooked bankers.)

” … or maybe shoot the waste into the sun and vaporize it.” Can we do this with the politicians in Washington as well?

Can sombody please help me get a poor slave girl released from prison? She is a political prisoner of George Bush’s, a CPA that formerly worked at the Atlanta Office of the IRS. She was very well respected there untill she found out that her biggest FRAUD was the IRS itself. She was a fraud investigator. And, As a mother of teen agers, she is needed at home. Please you must know someone that can remind him what it was like when he had teenagers at home, Especially before he leaves office. Thanks a heap for the politicians in Washington

Ahhh Serena good call! Send those cockroaches to a nice campfire! Sorry, got caught up in the moment..Lily, great point about our population crises - Even out here in the middle of the Mojave desert, there was an increase of population when I first moved here 6 years ago, we were about 24k then -and now- we are about 45k people. main reason for this is it’s cheaper living. That’s why I moved here, couldn’t afford living Los Angeles anymore. Also, I think the reason that some species (including gays) mate with the same sex to slow down the reproduction process. We are still likely to still have kids but not as many as 6 to12 kids like my large family has. Plus, most gay couples adopt because there are so many kids right now that are parent-less and/or lack the safety and security because for reasons like drug abuse and mental disorders has formed within the families. This may be the one of reasons why other I.Q.’s are getting worse - Last point I want to make is that people say that gays have an agenda? I say, yeah, it’s to clean up your messes and to help make this planet a better place” Anyways, that my 2 cents.

I’ve been wanting to relocate to the Mojave desert myself! I visit Joshua Tree/Yucca/Pioneertown every single year, as a couple of my favorite artists live and perform there…plus I love to hang out with the interesting locals.

Wow, that’s cool! It’s a small world! I see Joshua trees all the time when I travel to walker pass (in route to lake isabella/Kernville area) - I like it out here too (Ridgecrest) during the fall and spring season is quiet beautiful However, the summers and winters are somewhat harsh (high temps in summer, cold temps in winter) There is a lot of life forms here in the desert that’s for sure! Just the other day, I was almost bitten by a baby rattler snake and I’m deathly afraid of them anyways and it was only a few feet from the entrance to our home - what a terror! So living out here - you still need to respect the environment just like you would with any huge town or area. Watch out for snakes!
