Lily Tomlin to the Rescue of a Special-Needs Elephant

Dear wOw:

Some of you have written about my involvement recently in advocating for a special-needs elephant named Jenny who now resides at the Dallas Zoo in Texas. Those of us actively working on Jenny’s behalf have got to work fast as the zoo officials plan to move Jenny on October 1st to a drive-through safari park in Mexico where, again, she’ll be in far too little space and without companionship. Jenny will be subjected to more of the trauma that has contributed to and helped create her troubled history. There are many of us advocating to have Jenny sent to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

I’ve always been fascinated by elephants and the sensitivity they seem to show to their environment and to their elephant families. Elephants in captivity became more urgent to me because of a situation similar to Jenny’s that we have here at the Los Angeles Zoo. I began learning more about elephants in these stressful habitats and I was motivated to write a letter to our mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, urging the closing of our elephant exhibit and the removal of the elephants there to one of the elephant sanctuaries in the United States. Several zoos around the country have already closed their elephant exhibits as officials became aware that there is not enough room in zoos to provide a decent life for elephants — as these animals are simply too big! In most cases, these officials have had the compassion to send these elephants to sanctuaries rather than to other zoos or exhibits.

I’ve always been fascinated by elephants and the sensitivity they seem to show to their environment and to their elephant families.

Jenny at the Dallas Zoo is a special-needs elephant who needs the affectionate understanding, healing and rehab available at the Elephant
Sanctuary in Tennessee. The Sanctuary has more than 2,000 acres — and 300 acres for the elephants alone. And Jenny will have the desperately needed companionship of other African elephants. Elephants are extremely social and suffer deep depression without kinship with other elephants.

Log on to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and you can view their "Elecam."

At a second sanctuary in northern California, Performing Animals Welfare Society (PAWS), you can view videos showing the elephants there relating to one another with deep affection. Comparing these images with those of elephants chained, isolated and without exercise to prevent debilitating joint disease was illuminating for me.

The case of Jenny is a simple one: The Tennessee Sanctuary offers her healing and peace. The Elephant Sanctuary will take Jenny if Dallas will let her come. The caregivers there want her and they have room for her. The facility in Mexico is a drive-through safari open day and night with cars constantly present. Jenny is completely afraid of motor vehicles and, on top of it all, she will have barely an acre of land on which to "roam" — or less than two percent of the room she would have at the Elephant Sanctuary.

As Dr. Joyce Poole, who is regarded by many as the world’s leading authority on elephants recently wrote, “It is troubling that the Dallas Zoo would even consider sending this particular elephant (Jenny) to a drive-through attraction when the Elephant Sanctuary, a facility recognized worldwide for its expertise in the rehabilitation of troubled and ailing elephants, is willing to take Jenny. The Sanctuary has received elephants from many AZA-accredited zoos.”

Jenny is 32 years old; she has spent 22 of those years on exhibit in the Dallas Zoo. The Sanctuary offers her a place, finally, to live out what’s left of her life in a way that can bring her companionship and health. Jenny deserves a break.

Lily, Thank you for all your efforts on behalf of Jenny. I have always loved these amazing, wonderful creatures and Jenny is very special. She deserves to live out her life in peace at the sanctuary in Tennessee. Tom Leppert better get with it or he will be a one-term Mayor here in Dallas. We had a similar situation in Oregon a few years ago and through citizen activism we got Keiko-the orca whale transferred from a Mexico City acquarium, where he was very sick, to Oregon and subsequently to Iceland. I don’t know if anyone remembers, but watching Keiko being transferred by truck and then UPS plane to “go home”, was so thrilling and made me feel so go about what we humans can do when we put our minds to it.

Lily ………. Thank you so much for bringing Jenny’s world back into ours! I am searching for a photo that we have from my son’s first visit to a zoo. It was taken of him and Jenny in 1987 during a visit to see the grandparents. At the tender age of 5, my son was quite upset that Jenny could not come out to play and got mad that Jenny’s mother wasn’t with her.

All animals need caring people to protect them from the uncaring ones. I will do everything a cat can do to help Jenny get where she should be - with elephant friends and well deserved freedom from cages and anything else that might restrict her and make her unhappy. Dice Aroni

What a wonderful, worthy cause, to campaign for Jenny to go to the Elephant Sanctuary. One of the current residents, Bunny, lived in my hometown zoo almost her entire life. She was a replacement for another beloved elephant, Kay, who had fatally injured the zoo director and was later sold. Bunny had to endure our bitterly cold winters and our humid summers on the hard concrete with barely enough room to walk around, often alone except for a hippo, Donna, who is still here. As a small child I felt sorry for her because she seemed so lonely. When she left for the sanctuary nearly 10 years ago, many people were upset, but reading about her adjustment has been heart-warming. She has formed friendships with the other elephants and freely roams the sanctuary. It is truly heaven on earth for our pachyderm friends, and deserves all the support we can give. Lily, Edith Ann, and the rest… go go go! More power to you!

Thank you, Aunt Lily, for sticking up for Jenny. I love you. I told my mom about Jenny and she got on the phone to somebody who works at the Mayor in Texas and talked to him for a long long time. I am writing a letter to him too, only I’m going to say when Aunt Lily and Aunt Mugsy and my mom are all upset about the same thing, it just isn’t worth it. He might as well just do what they want because otherwise Mr. Mayor believe me, it will just be too much trouble for you. Mom said she has to read it when I’m done. Anyway, Aunt Mugsy also gave me this website which I also love: http://www.iowagreatapes.org.

Here’s what I did tonight: -I posted the info to my FaceBook friends of 550+ who are pretty activist, and sent them all a mesg too. -Sent the info to Animal Voices radio -Posted to the group (900 activists) ‘In Defense of Animals.” -Posted to the group (1,824 activists) “Animal Rights and contacted the head who is a researcher/animal rights activist at Univ of Mich, Jessamyn Samllenburg. -Posted to the group (1,200 activists) “Promote the Emotional Lives and Intelligence of Animals.” -I emailed Jane Godall at janegodall.org -I emailed PETA and discovered they have an action. Here’s their piece: Take Action for Elephant Jenny at Dallas Zoo The Dallas Zoo has announced that it intends to send Jenny, the zoo’s solitary African elephant, to a Mexican zoo rather than to an elephant sanctuary in the U.S. In a foreign zoo, Jenny would not be protected by the U.S. Animal Welfare Act, and U.S. authorities would have no power to ensure that she receives adequate care. In addition, Jenny will still be relegated to a substandard zoo exhibit. Because of space limitations, zoos—no matter how well-intentioned they might be—simply cannot provide for elephants’ physical and social needs. At The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, Jenny would be able to roam hundreds of acres of natural habitat, bathe in ponds, forage for fresh vegetation, and enjoy the company of many other elephants. Please contact Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, and politely urge him to cancel plans to send Jenny to Mexico. Please send polite comments to: The Honorable Tom Leppert Mayor of Dallas Dallas City Hall 1500 Marilla St., Rm. 5EN Dallas, TX 75201-6390 214-670-0646 (fax) http://www.ci.dallas.tx.us/forms/mcc/mayor_mail_form.htm (E-Mail Form)

Dear Lily - Thank you so much for advocating on behalf of Jenny, who cannot make her own wishes known. Jenny deserves a dignified and healthy life, one that acknowledges her intelligence and nobility. Any other fate is unthinkable. I have written to the mayor and city council of Dallas and will telephone the mayor’s office tomorrow. I believe there is hope for Jenny’s move to the Tennessee sanctuary because of your efforts and the response of those who care. I was associated with the San Diego Zoo for several years and spent many hours with the elephants, just getting to know them, appreciating how tender and sociable they were despite their immense size. Jenny must not be deprived of the companionship and care that she deserves. Maurine
