Lily Tomlin to the Rescue of a Special-Needs Elephant

Dear wOw:

Some of you have written about my involvement recently in advocating for a special-needs elephant named Jenny who now resides at the Dallas Zoo in Texas. Those of us actively working on Jenny’s behalf have got to work fast as the zoo officials plan to move Jenny on October 1st to a drive-through safari park in Mexico where, again, she’ll be in far too little space and without companionship. Jenny will be subjected to more of the trauma that has contributed to and helped create her troubled history. There are many of us advocating to have Jenny sent to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

I’ve always been fascinated by elephants and the sensitivity they seem to show to their environment and to their elephant families. Elephants in captivity became more urgent to me because of a situation similar to Jenny’s that we have here at the Los Angeles Zoo. I began learning more about elephants in these stressful habitats and I was motivated to write a letter to our mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, urging the closing of our elephant exhibit and the removal of the elephants there to one of the elephant sanctuaries in the United States. Several zoos around the country have already closed their elephant exhibits as officials became aware that there is not enough room in zoos to provide a decent life for elephants — as these animals are simply too big! In most cases, these officials have had the compassion to send these elephants to sanctuaries rather than to other zoos or exhibits.

I’ve always been fascinated by elephants and the sensitivity they seem to show to their environment and to their elephant families.

Jenny at the Dallas Zoo is a special-needs elephant who needs the affectionate understanding, healing and rehab available at the Elephant
Sanctuary in Tennessee. The Sanctuary has more than 2,000 acres — and 300 acres for the elephants alone. And Jenny will have the desperately needed companionship of other African elephants. Elephants are extremely social and suffer deep depression without kinship with other elephants.

Log on to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and you can view their "Elecam."

At a second sanctuary in northern California, Performing Animals Welfare Society (PAWS), you can view videos showing the elephants there relating to one another with deep affection. Comparing these images with those of elephants chained, isolated and without exercise to prevent debilitating joint disease was illuminating for me.

The case of Jenny is a simple one: The Tennessee Sanctuary offers her healing and peace. The Elephant Sanctuary will take Jenny if Dallas will let her come. The caregivers there want her and they have room for her. The facility in Mexico is a drive-through safari open day and night with cars constantly present. Jenny is completely afraid of motor vehicles and, on top of it all, she will have barely an acre of land on which to "roam" — or less than two percent of the room she would have at the Elephant Sanctuary.

As Dr. Joyce Poole, who is regarded by many as the world’s leading authority on elephants recently wrote, “It is troubling that the Dallas Zoo would even consider sending this particular elephant (Jenny) to a drive-through attraction when the Elephant Sanctuary, a facility recognized worldwide for its expertise in the rehabilitation of troubled and ailing elephants, is willing to take Jenny. The Sanctuary has received elephants from many AZA-accredited zoos.”

Jenny is 32 years old; she has spent 22 of those years on exhibit in the Dallas Zoo. The Sanctuary offers her a place, finally, to live out what’s left of her life in a way that can bring her companionship and health. Jenny deserves a break.

Good morning everyone! Edith is right—it’s not just one voice that is going to make a difference for Jenny. This is a team effort, and EVERYONE’S voice counts—the more, the better. A couple of my friends e-mailed me yesterday and said that they had not only sent the Dallas Mayor and the City Council e-mails, but also sent a Letter to the Editor of the Dallas newspaper. I hope they make it in, because one of my friends is an excellent writer, and he adores animals too! Edith, it’s great to hear that the Council is being prodded in the right direction. We ALL have to keep this up until they get so tired of hearing from us, they’ll make the right decision for Jenny. This feels so great to be a part of something positive for animals!! My “babies” want to write the Mayor too, but they don’t type very well. Although, I bet my cat could type for them—he has six toes on BOTH front paws. Opposable thumbs, who’d have thunk it?

Hey, Edith, when you wish on a star, which one do you pick? I think we could wish on Aunt Lily, because she’s a national treasure. But Mom says that’s not right. So I tried wishing on Judy Garland but then she said that still wasn’t right. So I said well what about the Muppets? They’re stars. But she said no, something like Antares or Andromeda. I haven’t seen them in any movies or on television or anything so I don’t even know what they do. So maybe they’re in the Olympics. And I don’t see why everybody watches games on television when they could just go out and play their own. Do you know? Anyway, I wish Jenny could go to Tennessee where she would be happy. It must have something to do with money. I think all the really stupid things people do like sending Jenny to Mexico must be about money. Not that the people in Mexico aren’t nice. But they probably have really dumb leaders like we do. Bye, Edith. Have fun today.

I’m sorry, Edith. I wasn’t supposed to use Aunt Mugsy’s computer anymore, so I thought I would just “sneak” onto wOw, but then it’s confusing because nobody knows it was really me that posted this. Um, thanks. Mugsy Jr.

WOW Women: I am not just partial to Serena and Mugs. Lily will be smiling about what all of you have written. I will phone her tomorrow and wake her up early to give her new energy to help Jenny. This will do it, I know. She told me there was a big fight at Dallas City Council yesterday on Wednesday, because some of the Council people are starting to see the light. The Jenny helpers were there and they will keep being there so that Jenny goes to Tennessee and lives a happy life. It is up to the Mayor and the City Council. I am wishing on a star tonight that they will see what is good and right. We will have to make them understand. Love, Edith

unfortunately, i live in fort worth texas, just miles away from jenny…she is on t v at least once a week…you can see she is deeply disturbed and unhappy…she is washed from behind a fence, and generally doesnt seem to have very much interaction with humans any more because apparently no one knows how to ‘handle’ her…hope for her peace of mind in tennessee….

Oh that is utterly heart-wrenching. Animal suffering to that extent is something that is SO overwhelming to me (and almost debilitating if I think about it long and hard enough) - I’d honestly be willing to, somehow, take in ALL the pain of EVERY animal as though it were my own…if I knew it would make their lives even a little bit easier… It’s just not friggin’ fair! =’( I’ve been sending a TON of positive vibes in Jenny’s direction these past couple days. She’s heavy on my mind. And there’s no greater power than that of the mind! And I’m not sure if I should change the topic like this (at the risk of trivializing something as sensitive as animal welfare), but since you live in Ft. Worth I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask - did you know Lily will be performing there in February 2009?

Kryssi K, my ele-friend Sheila suggested we focus on Jenny at 10 PM, since this is the Universe’s most receptive time. (also, I posted a comment on 8/14). Dorothy

Not sure if anyone has had a chance to post a link to this video, as it was uploaded just yesterday. It’s a clip from a Dallas news story about Jenny (I YouTube’d her because I wanted to see footage of her in action and not just photos - she’s a beautiful soul): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeAlRABrdqg

Kryssi, This is a great link about Jenny. Thanks for sharing it with everyone. However, damn how distressing! “Unhappy past” “Taken from her mom” “Emotional wreck” “Depression” “Abused as circus animal” “Companion died” … Emotions I am all too, too familiar with as a human. … these should not be the words that are used to describe such a splendid creature. I have no idea how animals internalize their world, but I know they feel. I know they are aware. I know their hearts can break as ours can. Just look in their eyes and you can see that “someone” is in there. HOLES Luck runs black-veiled And there are holes in everything: The tint to keep out the sun; The window screens and eyes; The heart that braves the beatings; And that forgotten spot in the mind. If it were not for the heat, I would not know where daylight began— Luck being black And greedy.
