An Update on Jenny the Elephant

Lily Tomlin

I wanted to post this recent e-mail from Concerned Citizens for Jenny, the elephant I posted about last week. Click here to read more about Jenny and then read the e-mail below.

The video below was taken by Jaime, a Concerned Citizen for Jenny, one week ago (see link below).  Great job, Jaime.

As you can see from the video, Jenny is not doing well at all. One can’t help but notice her repetitive swaying, a sign of great anxiety and stress in an elephant.

We must retire Jenny to the Elephant Sanctuary ASAP.  She is languishing her life away at the zoo. Time is of the essence. We must attend City Council each Wednesday afternoon in droves and contact the City government by the thousands.

Please civilly telephone, fax and e-mail the mayor and city council daily and urge them to immediately retire Jenny to TES.

Contact these city officials repeatedly until they do the right thing.
Contact info at:  concernedcitizensforjenny.net

Thank you.
Margaret

Serena .
Hey, but don’t give up on those good ideas Winery! We just don’t know what the future holds. Better to have some Plan Bs and Cs and Ds in our back pocket! :)

I wonder if the passersby even realize what’s going on when they look at her. I can imagine plenty of those who are ignorant about elephant behavior seeing a “happy” animal simply because she’s wagging her tail and whatnot. I see someone who has a lot of pent-up frustration and anxiety and fear, and NOWHERE to channel it! Actually, she looks like a lot like I do when I have a panic attack. For some reason it’s more heartbreaking to watch that video with the sound off.

Note to Serena: Didn’t get to read this thread and the first one on Jenny until just now and I want to applaud you for writing that wonderful poem in Jenny’s behalf . Why not just send it to the Mayor himself? What the hell is the matter with people? This makes me furious! I’ll click on the link above and see what I can do.

Hey Miss Phyllis, Thank you, great suggestion, and I did just now send the poem to the Mayor AND the Dallas City Council. And, I’ll keep sending it every hour on the hour if I have to! Serena

I’ve written to the mayor as well. It seems so obvious that Jenny needs to go to the elephant sanctuary - what is the problem? Thanks to all who are fighting for Jenny.

Mayr, According to the Dallas Zoo director the sanctuary isn’t accredited. Here’s a NYT piece: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/21/us/21elephant.html?ref=us Here’s a CBS piece that points out the average life of Af elephants is 34 years and she is 32…the construction of the new zoo space will take 15-18 months (when does construction ever get done on time?) ie her life is running out and she deserves to be in a natural peaceful habitat for the time she has left. http://cbs11tv.com/local/jenny.is.saved.2.799333.html

I just called the Mayors office and left a detailed message of my intentions. I will be calling frequently until he returns my call. The activist in me, thanks to my mother, is alive and well! I wrote the newspaper in Dallas as well. We are still on it Lily! Thanks for keeping us informed and for re-lightening the fire under my butt. HOLD ON JENNY! The wow women unite again!

Hi Lily, I so very much admire you using your fame to unite people’s support for such a worthy cause. My talents are money and nagging, both of which I have directed toward Jenny’s cause, thanks to you. I appreciate the update on her sadly deteriorating condition. It’s motivation to continue helping.

Lily, I remember you writing that a donor had provided adequate funding to have Jenny moved to the Elephant Sanctuary; however, if money is still an issue—for whatever reason—where can we send donations to? I didn’t see anywhere to donate on the “Concerned Citizens” web site.
