An Update on Jenny the Elephant

Lily Tomlin

I wanted to post this recent e-mail from Concerned Citizens for Jenny, the elephant I posted about last week. Click here to read more about Jenny and then read the e-mail below.

The video below was taken by Jaime, a Concerned Citizen for Jenny, one week ago (see link below).  Great job, Jaime.

As you can see from the video, Jenny is not doing well at all. One can’t help but notice her repetitive swaying, a sign of great anxiety and stress in an elephant.

We must retire Jenny to the Elephant Sanctuary ASAP.  She is languishing her life away at the zoo. Time is of the essence. We must attend City Council each Wednesday afternoon in droves and contact the City government by the thousands.

Please civilly telephone, fax and e-mail the mayor and city council daily and urge them to immediately retire Jenny to TES.

Contact these city officials repeatedly until they do the right thing.
Contact info at:  concernedcitizensforjenny.net

Thank you.
Margaret

I think the Dallas Zoo should get considerable credit, as well, for being willing to compromise. It must have come as quite a shock to them to find how very many folks were interested in their elephant!

This message to you has nothing to do with a zoo. I have been waiting to tell you what your appreciation (and others) for Blau Engel has led to. It was your reference to Redgrave as “an angel” that brought to mind my poem of years back. After I retrieved it from my files I reread it and wept. I wrote it ,as Johnny Cash says, “in a fever”––it poured out in minutes. When I saw your “oh,my’s” it struck me that you had “felt” what I had written. I suddenly realized why this piece affected me this way: It was an homage to someone with whom I had had a rare, extravagant affection for; we were very much like the rain soaked dresses––clinging together like second skins. And I realized, too, that although I have had many close, good relationships with women I had never, nor will I ever, have anything like I had with this dear friend who is no more. So thank you––––look what one word can lead to.

Thanks for this, Phyllis. I am becoming more and more convinced that it is just those “one words” that matter so much. Why I started blogging, in fact. I think you write beautifully, and hope you do more of it….

Serena .
Some of you (or all of you) may already have this link or the information, but just in case, this is the link that will take you to the web site containing the individual e-mail addresses of each Dallas City Councilmember: http://www.dallascityhall.com/government/council/contact_mcc.html Sorry if it’s a repeat.

Is anyone else writing a “thank you for the decision not to send Jenny to Mexico, but her best option is still the Sanctuary in Tennessee” letters? I thought I would email one to each of the Council members today.

Maurine, you smoke! Yes, folks, exactly. We want them to know we appreciate being listened to. Ms. Manners? White courtesy telephone, please…..

Great idea Maurine-sending mine in a minute and reminding them that we are still interested in Jenny’s welfare. So glad that she is at least in a familiar, if not ideal, environment.

Just a note, according to our little weekly local newspaper, as of yesterday, Thursday, August 21, 2008 “Elephant to stay in Dallas Zoo”. Zoo official says they will keep Jenny in the Dallas Zoo and find a companion for Jenny within the next few months. The Zoo is planning to open a new Elephant habitat by late next year or 2010.

OK, yesterday I emailed each of the City Council members, the mayor, the mayor pro-tem. The next step is to phone each of them on Monday. At the end of next week, I’ll write another email to each…a polite thank you for not sending Jenny to Mexico and a request to reconsider sending her to Tennessee because 2010 is just too far in the future. (Dates, as you all know, are never firm and bureaucracies move very, very slowly). I’m following each email with a phone call a few days afterward. It seems little enough to do for Jenny, who, meanwhile, is getting older, not better.

A columnist with The Dallas Morning News, Steve Blow, had an article about Jenny published today, 8.22.08. Steve might appreciate hearing from y’all http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/localnews/columnists/sblo…
