An Update on Jenny the Elephant

Lily Tomlin

I wanted to post this recent e-mail from Concerned Citizens for Jenny, the elephant I posted about last week. Click here to read more about Jenny and then read the e-mail below.

The video below was taken by Jaime, a Concerned Citizen for Jenny, one week ago (see link below).  Great job, Jaime.

As you can see from the video, Jenny is not doing well at all. One can’t help but notice her repetitive swaying, a sign of great anxiety and stress in an elephant.

We must retire Jenny to the Elephant Sanctuary ASAP.  She is languishing her life away at the zoo. Time is of the essence. We must attend City Council each Wednesday afternoon in droves and contact the City government by the thousands.

Please civilly telephone, fax and e-mail the mayor and city council daily and urge them to immediately retire Jenny to TES.

Contact these city officials repeatedly until they do the right thing.
Contact info at:  concernedcitizensforjenny.net

Thank you.

Dorothy Phillips ……. thank you most especially for this link. i just finished my letter to him addressing the arrogance demonstrated by both the Dallas Zoo and the City of Dallas Council Members. I also sent a copy of this letter to my local paper ……..

Linda, the thing to keep in mind when looking at the park & rec budget is that the zoo & aquarium ~ 2 separate facilities in 2 different locations ~ are combined. couldn’t find a break out of their respective budgets. if you haven’t seen these links, you might try http://www.dallascityhall.com/pdf/FY05AdoptedBudget/General/ParkAndRecre… http://www.dallascityhall.com/financial_services/2002-2003_adopted_conte… appreciate y’all posting a comment on Steve Blow’s article. Regards, Dorothy

Hello Everyone … I sadly had to work yesterday/today and am just now able to sit down and catch up on things. What a great community of caring individuals! It’s a beautiful sight to see all of the contact information and updated news media links that are all about Jenny’s plight. Our letters, emails and phone calls will hopefully go a long way towards keeping the REAL MESSAGE going …. the message being that 2009/2010/2011 are too long to wait …. Jenny has served the public well for 22 years and she’s earned a peaceful retirement at the Tennessee Sanctuary. Gold watch is not required! I do hope they reconsider and allow Jenny to go be a “hillbilly” (I can say this because I am a hillbilly - Virginia)! I heard through the grapevine that my family back home and around the country (including the Dallas area) are joking around saying that I’m trying to buy an elephant ……. It’s STILL not a bad idea! Does anyone here happen to have copies of the City of Dallas and the Dallas Zoo Budgets for 2005, 2006, 2007 and their 2008/09 proposed budgets? And no, I’m not kidding about the budget question …..

The dogma has always been big bodies need big brains and intelligence is not the size of the brain but the ratio of the brain to the body. The late John Lilly disputes this. He felt he has evidence that big brains require the support of a big body. Either, I saw this PBS show where a couple of elderly elephants were reunited after many years. There reaction was so emotional, so moving, I can never accept that this creatures are not worthly of respect and the right to be free of human interference and slavery. Stop the slavery. Free all creatures that of love.
