Lily's Plea for YOUR Help to Save Jenny the Elephant

Lily Tomlin

We’re coming down to the wire and Jenny the Elephant still needs your help! The plan to ship Jenny to a drive-through safari in Mexico is still in place. Click here to read about it and here to read about it. Please read this blog posting by a former Dallas zookeeper by clicking here.

And from the Founder of Concerned Citizens for Jenny:

This is beyond important for everyone who wishes to understand Jenny. Spread the word and cross-post to everyone you know, please.

Please continue to contact the mayor and city council and urge them to retire Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary. If you have not yet called the mayor or the council, let this be the moment you do. Go to the CCFJ website for contact info by clicking here.

Jenny needs us now, more than ever. We must be resolute on her behalf. She has no one but us.

Carol …….. As for the reason(s) behind tthe council’s and zoo’s decisions…………. in my opinnion, it was all a marketing ploy to obtain funding for what they now have as a shortfall from the 2007-08 budget. They are going to now close the zoo one-day-per-week to offset the shortfall in the budget! It’s all in the link that I posted earlier. Again …….. Happy Reading!

Maybe they should cut the city manager’s salary, first.

Linda, the zoo publicly stated not money was going to be exchanged for Jenny’s transfer to Mexico. The zoo’s rationale for keeping Jenny at the Dallas Zoo is they now fear transporting Jenny would be too stressful for her! The Elephant Sanctuary is willing to transport & care for Jenny for the rest of Jenny’s life. see WKRN-TV Nashville, TN July 2, 2008 coverage at http://www.wkrn.com/global/story.asp?s=8613765 This link is an alert published today (8.27.08) by In Defense of Animals about Jenny http://ga0.org/indefenseofanimals/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=1…

Dorothy ……. I meant to comment on your links last evening, but as I mentioned in my email, I was watching the DNC Convention events. The second article (IDA) was a bit of a confirmation regarding my position on the quality of life anticipated for Jenny, the indifference towards her needs and the lack of commitment on the part of the Dallas Zoo and the City of Dallas.

I’ve been emailing and calling the Mayor’s office. No local word here in Dallas about what is happening and of course you can’t get anyone to call you back. Lily please tell us if there is anything else we can do.

Even as a child, I have always hated Zoo’s and Circuses because my feelings were that animals should not be on display. Period. This just emphasizes even more my beliefs; it is cruel to keep animals away from their natural environment.

What is it with humans and slavery, anyway?! We’re not allowed to enslave other “races” here (technically…), nor children anymore, so naturally they’ve moved on to animals. What a slow evolution this has been. One time while walking in New Orleans I found myself face-to-face at an intersection with one of those horses they use to pull tourists’ carriages through the Quarter, and the coach dude was like “You want a ride?”…I just looked at him, then down at the horse, then back at him, and silently answered with this hateful “you should be ashamed of yourself” glare…I mean I was nearly in tears when I saw the miserable look in the horse’s eyes. I can’t believe SO many people are completely oblivious to the suffering we put animals through!

Has somebody got an update on the current situation?

Hi Mugsy ……. no new info as of yet. I still haven’t been able to confirm the October 1rst impending move date that was noted in the CCFJ message by Margaret Morin from yesterday. I did a lot of research yesterday, reading 3 budgets and 1 bond approval from the City of Dallas; and a whole lot of articles from the more reputable news outlets . There are a great many inconsistencies that don’t seem to have been reported to the Dallas citizens regarding the usage of funds from the 2006 Bond that was approved by the voters. The monies are still in there but have been mingled into the General Fund. Their City Charter is very similar to that of Corpus Christi’s. It has many allowances for the redistribution of allocated Bond Dollars; but the paper trail is very thin.

Mugsy …… I began my search in the 2006 Bond Election as that is where the original plans and monies were to come from for the improvements to the Elephant expansion project. The explanations and time-frames noted by the city and zoo officials do not jive with the budget information that they themselves have referenced ………….

the mayor gave the group of Jenny supporters 15 minutes to speak ~ 3 speakers made statements @ today’s 8.27.08 city council meeting. council meetings can be heard on 101.1 WRR, a city owned station.
