Limbaugh Attacks Pelosi Over Contraceptive Stimulus

Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives are hopping mad over economic stimulus money meant to aid state family-planning programs. And it appears they’ve won this battle.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been taking a lot of heat for including money in the $825 billion stimulus bill for state family-planning programs, including Medicaid-funded contraceptives. The bill contains $87 billion in emergency Medicaid funding to help states. It has turned into a lightning rod for some Republicans who say not only does this program not constitute job creation or stimulate the economy, but it is also paramount to abortion.

Limbaugh on Monday essentially said family planning "is abortion all over the world," adding: “When I think of reducing budget deficits, it would never occur to me to think about eliminating people … If she wants fewer births, I have the way to do this, and it won’t require any contraception. You simply put pictures of Nancy Pelosi … put pictures of Pelosi in every cheap motel room in America today, that will keep birth rates down because that picture will keep a lot of things down." We doubt that’s true, but the Democrats do appear to backing down.

Here’s what Pelosi recently told ABC News about why the money was originally included:

Well, the family-planning services reduced costs, it reduced costs. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crisis now, and — and part of it, what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements that are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those — one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, is — will reduce cost to the state, and to the federal government … We have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

Now, that plan may not be "stimulus," per se, but it seems the economy should have little to do with family planning. If you’re not in a position to have a child, then shouldn’t you have access to proper programs? What do you think?

Considering Rush Limbaugh said himself just a few days ago, that he wants Obama to fail…. I would take ANY advice of his with a grain of salt. Though, my guess is Obama doesn’t take Limbaugh’s advice at all!

We tried letting companies run free, and they gave us this nice little recession in return. Oh, gee. 10k more get laid off today, how fun is that! Why don’t we let the markets just keep correcting themselves until we are the third-world country the Republicans are so determined to make us? Perhaps you could explain to the class why a business would hire more workers in the face of a diminishing customer base just for the sake of a few tax breaks? After that, you can tell us how to sell below cost make a profit on volume. Gitmo was such an offense to all that American stands for, it had to be done in another country. What a wonderful recruiting tool it has been - for al-Qaeda! You might find it a little hard to pry Nancy P out of the Senate - considering she is SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

Zera: What a wonderful recruiting tool it has been - for al-Qaeda! Well, Zera, al-Qaeda can look forward to getting some of their best men back. We’ll see how that works for America’s image.

Oh…. did you read somewhere that they’re just going to set them free? And that they have all been proven to be Al Qaeda? How did they prove that without trials, or even charges on most of them? You think that the only option other than keeping people in a prison for 6 years without charging them, or giving them a trial is just setting them free? HMM… maybe THAT is what is wrong with conservative ‘thinking’.

DeBúrca: …did you read somewhere that they’re just going to set them free? The Exec Order is to shut down Gitmo within the year. Obviously, these detainees have to be shuffled about… brought to the U.S….? sent back home…? Tried? Freed? Executed? I don’t know. I agree with everyone who says it is a mess.

Charged. Tried. either put into other high security prisons or set free if they aren’t convicted. We can’t just let people sit there and rot because Americans are “scared”… even if we aren’t torturing them anymore. It is pretty much taken for granted now by investigators that some who have been sitting in that place not even having been charged with a crime yet, and even tortured, for several years now shouldn’t have even been arrested in the first place.
