Limbaugh Attacks Pelosi Over Contraceptive Stimulus

Rush Limbaugh and other conservatives are hopping mad over economic stimulus money meant to aid state family-planning programs. And it appears they’ve won this battle.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been taking a lot of heat for including money in the $825 billion stimulus bill for state family-planning programs, including Medicaid-funded contraceptives. The bill contains $87 billion in emergency Medicaid funding to help states. It has turned into a lightning rod for some Republicans who say not only does this program not constitute job creation or stimulate the economy, but it is also paramount to abortion.

Limbaugh on Monday essentially said family planning "is abortion all over the world," adding: “When I think of reducing budget deficits, it would never occur to me to think about eliminating people … If she wants fewer births, I have the way to do this, and it won’t require any contraception. You simply put pictures of Nancy Pelosi … put pictures of Pelosi in every cheap motel room in America today, that will keep birth rates down because that picture will keep a lot of things down." We doubt that’s true, but the Democrats do appear to backing down.

Here’s what Pelosi recently told ABC News about why the money was originally included:

Well, the family-planning services reduced costs, it reduced costs. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crisis now, and — and part of it, what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements that are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those — one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, is — will reduce cost to the state, and to the federal government … We have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

Now, that plan may not be "stimulus," per se, but it seems the economy should have little to do with family planning. If you’re not in a position to have a child, then shouldn’t you have access to proper programs? What do you think?

You are so right! But maybe the idiots who voted for these fools will see that they don’t have a clue what going on! This $1 Trillion Stimulus Bill has so much pork in it that it will bankrupt the country for the next 20 years! Stimulating the economy doesn’t require money but just cutting the huge corporate tax and add tax credits to certain business would automatically kick this economy into gear! But Obama is too stupid to understand this! And the idiot liberals in Congress are only looking to get re-elected so they will not be during “jack” to jump start this economy!

S.J. …do contraceptives stimulate the economy??? The Dems are like teenagers with money. They spend and spend and spend without regard to tomorrow. California might be a good example. But, the upside is… for every contraceptive bought, another has to be made (manufactured). Problem is, they’re probably made in China.

The republicans spent us into the biggest deficit in history. I see why you want everyone to “not walk backward”… so that you can say things like “Dems spend and spend etc” without choking on the fact that it is and has been the GOP spending that is off the scales.

Frank, I know you read Krugman on this topic http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/26/opinion/26krugman.html?_r=1 From the column: (Some of these arguments are obvious cheap shots. John Boehner, the House minority leader, has already made headlines with one such shot: looking at an $825 billion plan to rebuild infrastructure, sustain essential services and more, he derided a minor provision that would expand Medicaid family-planning services — and called it a plan to “spend hundreds of millions of dollars on contraceptives.”) The Repubs love using lightening rod terms like “contraceptives” the same way the used “Sex Education” being taught in kindergarten against Obama. Every teacher who knows the kindergarten curriculum knows that sex is not discussed, but the ads against Obama left that part out. Sure there must be some pork in this bill that can be trimmed, but health and education should be off limits otherwise the states will have to bear all of the burden, and they can’t afford to do it either.

I agree and yes I’ve read Krugman on this. The repubs are trying to pull weight and they no longer have the heft to do so.

DeBúrca: A frightening commentary on American society and the American education system. Must be all Bush’s fault…;-} Nearly half the country didn’t vote for Obama, these people are jittery about this new administration. Hence, the high volume of listeners to Limbaugh’s shows. They’re not all mentally deranged or idiots as the lefts believe (and will soon find out), they are just ordinary concerned citizens.

47% of the voters. Not “nearly half the country”. Limbaugh is an idiot, college flunk out who makes his living pandering to those who do not know better.

In actuality Rush is the embodiment of the 19th century snake-oil salesman —he’s really no different in his approach or his means. only now he has the radio—fortunately not a pulpit though I’m sure he’d use one of those if he could—he peddles his message of hate and 40 million bigots squat and strain bow down and say how much!
