Linda Meyer's Daily Deed Idea: Collect Coats

Small deeds become large actions when practiced by an entire community of caring women
By Linda Meyers
Posted by Linda Myers on 01/06/2009 11:30 am I have collected three trash bags of winter coats, hats, etc. for the local Catholic Charities, and today is delivery day. They are a great org., no questions asked when people come through the door for religous purpose,  just willing to lend a hand. There is not always the money I would like to hand to them, but I find other ways to help them and the commnunity where I llive.

Blessings, Linda

I believe that anything can be created from the smallest available portion, and it sets motion forward. It was a fun project, one lady went through her house and not only found the coats, she found all the matching hats and mittens on the kids coats and pinned them on also. My daughter works at a restaurant, so I had her tell the people she works with that they could donate and I would wash them and nake sure they were clean, but that was not needed. Everybody did their own cleaning. Many times it is not a matter of not helping, it is more just of having an outlet created to help from. Seeing babies outside being carried sometimes only in socks, and sometimes barefoot was all the push I needed. Thank you, Linda

That’s so right, LInda. So many times I’ve had something in my hands that was not useful to me but would be to someone — but where to go? Good for you for understanding this and doing something about it! … So cool that your friends found the hats and mittens, too! The children who get your coats will know that someone really cared.

A year ago Christmas I took a time out, and became a bell ringer for 30 days. That was something which was the hardest 30 days of my life, but the best. One day I spent 8 hours holding an umbrella in a ice storm, and ringing the bell with another. I also soon found out that the energy you put out, is the same that will be responded with. Keep the energy up, and everybody was a donor. One day a man came out of the store with a small sack of cookies, and told me not to give them away. I put them on the ledge behind me, and figured that when I got a chance I would look at them. A half hour later he came out with another bag of cookies and told me to be sure not to give them away. I said okay, and now I had two sacks of cookies. A few hours later I sat down and looked in the sacks, in one was a 20.00 bill, in the second was 45.00. And a quick note to keep the money, God bless you! Since then, all times of the year you tend to remember the ones that are cold, and can not duck out of the weather, you try to pay it forward. I had a Christmas angel do it for me, and I try to do it for others. Blessings and thank you, Linda

Pay it Forward. How beautiful and rewarding an idea…..

Linda…you are wonderful. Several years ago I helped organize Christmas presents for underprivileged kids. Each child was asked to write their wants and desires….one little girl wrote “I really would like a coat as it gets cold wearing my blue sweater when it’s really cold.” Believe me, she got a new coat and a new red sweater and some boots and mittens and a hat and a bunch of toys! I will never forget that statement by a child. Now I always buy coats at summer garage sales to give to the needy. I might not be rich but I always put change in the red buckets. There is always someone worse off than I.

Women are the hardest hit in downturns because they are not paid equal wages. Help your sisters PLEASE do this good deed: The House is expected to vote tomorrow on fair pay. Urge your elected leaders to support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act.
