Will Lisa Bonet's Untraditional Baby Name Inspire Ana Ortiz?

There must be something in Hollywood’s sparkling water! In case you haven’t noticed, there are some new mother-related trends springing up from the celebrated land. First, it seems more and more actresses are waiting until "later" in life to procreate. And then there are all those bizarre baby names.

For an example of our first observation, look no further than 37-year-old Ana Ortiz, who plays "Ugly Betty’s" older sister on the hit ABC series and is reportedly pregnant. Ortiz counts as the second cast mate to wait until later before jumping into motherhood. Fellow cast mate, the leggy actress Rebecca Romjin, at 36, gave birth to twin girls last week with her actor husband Jerry O’Connell. Romjin celebrated Ortiz’s announcement this week, telling Monsters and Critics, "I’m so happy for Ana. She is going to be such an amazing and fun mom. And if she has a boy, he’s already got two dates for the prom. And if she has a girl, she’s about to get a ton of hand-me-downs!"

Romijn and Connelly named their twins Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip, which, by Hollywood standards, are pretty tame. But other baby names, as you know, are simply wild. Actress Lisa Bonet, 41, of "The Cosby Show" fame, just welcomed her third child – Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa. According to a fansite for the "Life on Mars" actress, the baby’s name is Hawaiian. The translation, reported in the Daily News, means: Nakoa (warrior) Mana (strength/spirit) Kaua (rain) po (dark) Nakoa (warrior) Mana(strength/spirit) Kaua(rain) po(dark).

Other untraditional baby names:
Apple (Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin)
Coco Riley (Courtney Cox-Arquette and David Arquette)
Suri (Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise)
Sunday Rose (Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban)
Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trig (Sarah and Todd Palin)

Ortiz is due in July and is married to musician Noah Lebenzon. For goodness sake, let’s offer them some traditional baby names.

I am so old fashioned, I prefer traditional names. I see a disturbing trend in this regard. Between celebrities naming their kids off the beaten path and out there names like Apple, Suri and Cococ, Blacks continuing to give their kids bizarre names like Shanikqua Shequan, Omalooka, Jonquil, etc, etc. we are losing our sense of tradition. Goodness knows Belinda Joy is not a typical name, but I kind of miss names like Betty, Robin, Sarah…… It scares me to think of what the names will be in just 10 years. :-) But then again everything must change right?

My father always liked the sound of “Cellar Door” and often talked about how unfortunate it was that the phonetic lilt translated to such a dreary phenomenon. It’s his fault that my middle name is Yvette. My cherokee heritage brought me into the world with a thick head of coal black hair. He thought I looked like a little papoose, and since “Yvette” means “archer” and Indians shoot arrows….(sigh).

My husband’s little Great-Granddaughter’s name is Journey - she and little Tripp should travel well together.

It is no surprise that artists would also be creative when they are naming their children. Why wouldn’t they?

Also, as far as traditional names go…. you cannot call an ethnic name, such as a Hawaiian name, or in my son’s case, a traditional Irish name “non-traditional” merely because it is not traditional in this state or country. In Lisa Bonet’s child’s case, the father IS Hawaiian, so the name is traditional. In the case of Barack Hussein Obama, that name is traditional in the country his father came from, and in the case of my son, he was born in Ireland and his father is an Irish citizen… though my son’s name is unusual here, its very common AND traditional there.

Nothing wrong with traditional names. I take an ethnic traditional name over a generic trendy one any time. As for “artistic” names - Audio Science, Pilot Inspektor, Bronx Mowgli, Moon Unit, Dweezle - those names are not artistic, they´re stupid and pretentious.

A name given by a loving parent is not stupid. That would be like saying naming your child “John” is thoughtless and lacks imagination. Parents name their children names they love and have their own reasons for it. And I agree, nothing wrong with traditional names, as long as people realize that there are different names which are considered traditional by different ethnic backgrounds and cultures and just because a name is not familiar doesn’t make it non-traditional.

I was talking about celebrity kids. And I think that some celebrities think along the lines of “What name can I choose/invent to set myself apart and show the world how creative and unique I am”. It´s about them and not about their child - and I think that´s a pretentious and stupid attitude (okay, so it´s not the name). Or at least a very careless attitude because I´m not sure if they really consider the consequences for their child. I wouldn´t want to be called Pilot Inspektor - nothing wrong with John though.

I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt that they put more care into their choice of names than that. Also, perhaps there is a lot more wiggle room for what is considered a problem name in Hollywood than in middle America. Their children would probably be considered strange for having a name like Mike or Sarah.

I guess I was a normal Mom: My daughter is Kelley Marie, and my son’s name is Richard Raymond however we always called him Raymond. See pretty normal.
