Liz Peek: Stock Market Gives Obama’s First Month An 'F'

Editor’s Note: Liz Peek is a financial columnist and the author of wOw’s Wall Street Weekly and SHEconomics.
Today marks the one-month anniversary of President Obama’s inauguration. In his brief time in office, the president has overseen three massive new spending initiatives — the $787 billion stimulus bill, the trillion-dollar financial stability initiative and, most recently, the $275 billion mortgage assistance program.
That’s a lot of activity, and a ton of money, but so far the reaction to the new administration’s programs has been decidedly negative. Investors, among others, have panned the plans; the stock market is off nearly 10% from the day before the inauguration, or more than 800 points on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Yesterday, in fact, we crossed a truly alarming divide. The Dow Jones average closed at its lowest point since October 2002, the bottom of the last bear market. The S&P 500 fell to 779, barely above the intra-day low of 741 of last November. For many market analysts, if the market crashes through that recent benchmark, it will next move significantly lower. Ouch.
What is going to turn this beast around, and what should the president do? First of all, let’s dispense with the antiquated notion that only rich people own stocks, and that the market’s ups and downs are unimportant. Almost everyone has a stake in our financial markets, either through owning stocks and bonds directly or through pension plans. Even the neediest Americans who are fed or clothed by charities are hurt when those organizations’ endowments crater or donations dry up.
Clearly, it is way too early for any of the new stabilization and stimulus programs to have taken effect. Why then is the consensus so pessimistic? Certainly the political wrangling of the past month has dispelled optimism that President Obama can change the contentious nature of American politics. Both Democrats and Republicans have spurned Obama’s leadership. The free-for-all over the stimulus bill portrayed Congress in the worst possible light — no surprise there — and led Americans to view not only the process but the bill with utter skepticism. Delivering a 1000-page bill to our legislators just two hours before the signing deadline (and then going on a long-weekend holiday before signing it) was outrageous. The mortgage relief plan hasn’t been received much better. Most Americans (ninety two percent, by some estimates) pay their mortgages on time; they’re darned if they know why they should bail out their neighbors.
At the same time, Obama’s own administration seems sharply divided between pragmatists and ideologues. For instance, one camp is pushing for protectionist measures while the other recognizes the dire consequences that "Buy American" provisions might deliver.

Are they also watching what monies go to House Democrat’s districts? That would seem appropriate all around. Why shouldn’t it go to all the districts in the US, everyone is going to have to pay for it. All taxpayers are going to be hit with the bill, why shouldn’t everyone be able to use the credit card in their district? The democrats did not need any repub in the house to vote in order for it to pass. Eleven Dems didn’t vote for it, so their districts shouldn’t get the monies? We all have to pay it back so there should be an even distribution throughout the states, don’t you think? Fair is fair. If only dem districts get it, then maybe they should bear the burden of paying it back.
Of courseit should go to all districts regardless of party or who voted for it, however, that article is about the hypocrisy ofthose Senators and Reps who are so loudly saying they are against the bill yetquietly making sure they get their chunk of the money.
Frannie Em: If only dem districts get it, then maybe they should bear the burden of paying it back.
I rather like that idea.
Deber and Marjorie….I think it’s already in the works that the dem states are going to turn to repub states….not too many dems are happy right now how obama praised the "sucker package"! I think the dems are digging their own grave….in fact, I heard some states saying they are shovel ready!!!
This is absolutely the last time I’m even looking at Peek’s submissions. Anyone who’s invested in the stock market knows that it isn’t indicative of our nation’s economy, much less the entire worlds, or else it would have been trembling, and shaking before America took down the world finance markets in September 2008.
For Peek to so much as dare to posit our new president’s ability on the basis of something we’ve come to know as criminal, unethical, and responsible for inflating gasoline prices for all Americans is irreprehensive, and irresponsible at best. I, for another, am insulted. (I have to presume Peek ignored the Frontline show this week, too.)
She’s going to way of other hate-mongers who refuse to "get a job" and wait like the rest of us have to do, instead of lashing out personal feelings on many hapless victims.
Put in my bid to remove her from our website.
This post is best read if you can imagine it being voiced by a screeching crone…
This is absolutely the last time I will ever look at anything outside my narrow world view. Anyone who’s ever been indignant over an opinion piece knows that opinion pieces are not indicative of all people’s views, much less the entire world’s, or else we would all think exactly alike, just as we should be since November 2008.
For Peek to so much as dare to share her opinion on the basis of something about which she obviously knows alot is irreprehensive [which I am sure isn’t a word but I’m all worked up into a lather and I’m spittin’ mad] and responsible at best. I, like a true totalitarian am aghast that she had the audacity to share her opinion. (I have to assume that she didn’t get her marching orders from the Frontline show this week too.)
She is revealing me as a hate-monger because she is showing a diversity of opinion I cannot tolerate, she’ll just have to recognize that we’re all victims of rich white men.
Put in my totalitarian, intolerant bid to remove her from our website.
Dissent will not be tolerated.
Dissent is no longer "the highest form of patriotism" now that BH Obama is president.
"This post is best read if you can imagine it being voiced by a screeching crone" lol
Unfortunately this is the downside of this site! The screeching crones.
You "righties" just can’t go one single thread without slinging your insults can ya?
Catherine: …without slinging your insults…
First page, and we have this from (Suzanne?) C jay: Put in my bid to remove her from our website.
Now, that’s intolerance you can count on.
If it were not for our founding fathers with their ,what you may call, antiquated ideals and goal of limited government, you would not be able to broadcast to the world that you are a totalitarian.
Thank God for the freedom to express our views. Even if someday the Constitutionalists and conservatives are censored by fairness doctrine or by anarchy, great!
Watch the movie, "300" to see how powerful a minority can be. The mob never wins (ie French Revolution)
Bon jour!
Keith, people have been coming in here since the first week of the presidency calling President Obama names like "Obambi" etc, picking apart every word or deed he or his people have made, repeating lunatic conspiracy theories and even actually saying "I hope he fails". THAT is not "dissent" and there is nothing patriotic about it.
To compare the bile that has been aimed at this president beginning only days after he got into office to people speaking out after being subjected to years of Bush policies that turned a surplus into the biggest deficit in history, gave away tax payers money to private companies through no-bid military contracts, created 2 wars, lied to the people, trampled on our constitution and civil rights by warrentless wiretapping and turning the Justice department into a polical strong arm
