Liz Smith Admits Her Darkside – Sort Of

Liz Smith

If someone gave me $40,000 to buy an automobile, I would investigate to see if there are U.S.-made models now getting good mileage. Then I’d probably end up with a BMW convertible. (I am not a good person all the time!)

There are more American-made cars with 30+ fuel efficiency than from any other nation, Liz. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090202/AUTO01/902020…

Hi James — is that you in front of your open refridgerator door? Yes, you tell her! Does she read the papers? I haven’t owned a car for 10+ years, use public transit, cabs and my feet, and I know when I am ready to buy my next car, it will be an American-made car!

Dear Kay … now I feel a hell of a lot better. thanks for your comment. Seriously I will buy American when Detroit gets its act together and I believe it will. And , James, your info is encouraging. Why oh why did the U.S. drag its feet so long in its love of foreign oil and why oh why did everybody resist going green in even the slightest way? Oh yes, and I am walking a lot these days. Liz

Hi Liz— Now there you go again, blaming the US’s love of “foreign oil” and “everybody [else] resisting going green?” I’m sure your BMW gets great gas mileage, but “me thinks thou doest protest too much!” You could trade that BMW in for an American model (made by American workers) that will get you excellent mileage. It won’t have the cache of a BMW, but let that be your personal sacrifice.

Liz, the answer can be summed up in one word: greed. As long as the loot was rolling in, Big Oil saw no reason to put the infrastructure (read: pumps) in place to accommodate alternative fuels, which it had the technology to do 20 years ago on a mass scale. The auto industry simply manufactured what people wanted: gas-guzzlers. The Detroit Three were caught with their pants down when the Arabs artificially raised the price of oil, and Americans could no longer afford to put half a week’s salary into Betsy.
