Liz Smith Asks Once More: 'They Said What?'

Dame Edna © Getty Images

"I was taking a little tour of the North Pole and saw this attractive woman crouching at a hole in the ice, the most attractive Eskimo I’d ever seen. We skinned a moose and chewed the fat!" –Dame Edna with Jay Leno, speaking of Sarah Palin

"I love wearing makeup. But if you want to look like yourself, it’s not such a good plan. You end up looking like someone else … Right now, I’m not wearing a stitch. I’m not actually wearing any clothes right now." –Oscar winner for "Michael Clayton" actress Tilda Swinton

"I kind of feel bad for Warner’s … They had to move the new ‘Harry Potter’ movie to next summer because its teenage star is naked and having sex with a horse on Broadway." –Fox TV’s Roger Friedman

"If you’re puzzled why two political neophytes are now running for the highest offices in the land, the explanation is simple. This is the ‘American Idol’ election." –Steven Stark of The Boston Phoenix.

"I was really hurt, I mean, John McCain didn’t even vet me. It’s OK, he didn’t vet Sarah Palin either." –Mike Huckabee

"No, he’s not too old to be president! No! Of course he’s not! And I’m not either! You’re looking at a man who could be president – right now!" –Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), age 90

"Palin has made the biggest step forward in feminism since Madonna channeled the dominatrix persona of high-glam Marlene Dietrich and rammed pro-sex, pro-beauty feminism down the throats of the prissy, victim-mongering philistine feminist establishment." –Camille Paglia (who is still voting for Barack Obama)

"What did I do? I went out. I was 18 years old. Just because I was on ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ didn’t mean that I didn’t get to have my own experiences.  I certainly wasn’t showing my crotch." –Shannen Doherty, age 37

"Hillary looks ten years younger than she did when she thought she was about to become the first woman president. She’s developed this … glow. It appears that not only does she possess superhuman resilience; she positively thrives on crushing disappointment." –Gail Collins in The New York Times

"Tom makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world … I love calling him husband." –Katie Holmes in The Hampton Sheet

I may not ever vote for Mike Huckabee, but I sure do like him.

I had never seen the quote from Huckabee Carol, in regard to Palin….that was hilarious! That really gave me a chuckle.

Although I wouldn’t call Obama a political neophyte. “Tom makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world … I love calling him husband.” –Katie Holmes in The Hampton Sheet Gag choke gag some more (and I even kind of like Tom Cruise still)

Only Liz can stitch nudity, obeisance, feminism, Dame Edna and Paglia into one crazy quilt. Taken together, they seem unified behind one blanket message… for Palin: You go, girl! Go right now.

Good Lord, did we read the same words? How on earth did you come up with THAT?

Erica, Anyone who can improve a sentence of mine by the omission or placing of a comma is looked upon as my dearest friend. (George Moore) You go, girl! Go, Right Now.

Thanks, Sandbee. How are things in your neck of the woods, if I may ask?

I am very lucky, I have power and water, hundreds of thousands are in so much worse shape. My home suffered damages which are bad but able to be fixed, roofing repair and some outside work but those will get done. One thing, so far, I am proud of my city and state. People are working together to take care of those who need help, hope that behavior keeps up as time drags on since they are saying some electrical repairs may take weeks and of course, people on Galveston Island don’t know if & when they can ever return to what homes they have left. Those are the sad situations.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m so very happy to know that you are well and have damage that can be repaired. I’ve sent money to the Red Cross to help with Galveston, and join you in feeling sad for their situation. All the best.

Kitty, our financial situation isn’t great due to health problems so we are giving what we can in other ways, family and friends are coming by for cell phone charging, email checking, showers and my husband (who has the health problems) has become The Ice Man, making blocks and cubes so that he has enough for anyone who stops in. My son’s neighbor loaned him a generator. I think people need to work together in a time like this. Thank you for your thoughts.

That reminds me of another quote of the week. Megan Fox said about Olivia Wilde: (She) “is so sexy she makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands.”

Well, I don’t know the particulars of the Holmes-Cruise marriage…but I know what its like to finally find that man who loves you just the way you are and makes you feel sexy even when you don’t…my starter husband “required” that I, as the “Perfect Corporate Wife” be perfectly dressed, made up, etc. each day, even if I wasn’t leaving the house…it went to his image…imagine how I felt at dinner parties when I heard his colleagues say “Wow, if you ever get tired of her, I’ll take her, she’s the Perfect Company Wife!’ Hey, Bidder, Bidder!’ What the hell was that??? When I met my now husband, and we were first having “sleepovers” I would wake before he did and sneak downstairs to apply make up and fluff my hair…imagine my horror when I woke one morning to find that he was already awake!! Aiyeee!! He looked at me and said “Really? do you think I was attracted to the “paint”? I was attracted to the woman…I fell in love with you from the inside out…not the other way around.” Ahhh…that is freeing and wonderful…so maybe that is what Mrs. Cruise is saying…I just know its a great thing to know my husband thinks I’m a “great dame” and beautiful even first thing in the morning.

J B - I can SOOO relate! On our first “sleepover” I was wearing a Diamondbacks T-shirt and when I crawled out of bed to sort of repair the face, hair etc - he looked at me and said “Good morning beautiful” - meant it and has been saying it every morning since for the past 7 years! You’re right - it is THE single most freeing thing in my life, to be loved from the inside out!
