Cher To Hillary: We Want You, Babe!

"I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat," said P. J. O’Rourke.

——————————

What has happened on the pre-convention scene since last Wednesday has set political junkies on their ear! After he won the primary, Barack Obama looked like an unbeatable Democratic candidate. But, Sen. Hillary Clinton, who fought the good fight and emerged as an ever-more important and dynamic persona, would still not be his choice for vice president. Those of us Democrats who were for her — that is, the rational ones among us — accepted this fact and turned our support to Obama. He has many appealing qualities and his election is important to anyone who has their mind on the far right drift of the Supreme Court.

But then matters began to slide and this columnist has said on a number of recent occasions that if Obama wants to ensure his election, he needs to look again at Hillary. (I said this last Tuesday on CNN’s "American Morning" with John Roberts. Click here to watch the clip.) I also remarked on the unpleasant reality — to many — of Sen. Clinton’s famous husband’s omnipresence. But I believe it won’t be a factor. I think she would force him to butt out! Her loss in the primary taught her a great lesson and I know this for a fact.

——————————

Nobody paid a bit of attention to my chiding Obama to take Hillary as a precaution, if not as the best of a lot of dreary choices. Then Wednesday night, following Ralph Nader’s astonishing prediction that just what we’ve said here should happen, would  happen —  all the talking heads on TV began a drumbeat — it should be, it will be Hillary, Hillary, Hillary!  And as Obama’s polls shortened the distance between him and John McCain, people said this more and more.

So you won’t be surprised to learn that one of the most famous superstars the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s — now on her eternal comeback career — telephoned us entirely on her own initiative to have her say.

If you don’t care about celebs endorsing politicians, then so be it. If you are curious — read on.

——————————

My phone rings midday Wednesday. A slightly hoarse, husky woman’s voice says, "Liz? Do you know who this is?" The voice is familiar, but I can’t be sure. Am I in an old American Express commercial? I hate guessing games. "No, who is this?" I reply with more acerbity than intended. "Oh, I love when people don’t know. Liz, it’s Cher!" Indeed it is Cher, fighting a strained throat, courtesy of her ongoing Las Vegas gig.

Cher says, "I have something I want to tell you." Visions of wedding invitations or a Korean baby adoption dance through my head. "Yes?" Cher gives with the big reveal, with no preamble: "If Barack Obama does not pick Hillary Clinton as his running mate, he is going to lose this election." I start to respond, but Cher is on a roll "I think millions won’t vote. And not just the ‘uneducated, blue-collar women,’ as the media condescendingly refers to Hillary supporters."

Cher, it seems, has decided to take no prisoners on this one. She is certainty itself. "He can’t win without her. No other running mate can help him. He needs her. She is formidable in ways he is not — at least not yet." I venture then the caution that Republicans have a standing "Get Hillary" campaign ready to go. Cher snorts: "There is nothing more to be said about her. She and Bill Clinton have been the victim of every ghastly accusation. They have
survived."

Of Obama, Cher says: "I like him. He is a good person. Intelligent and thoughtful. But he comes off as too thoughtful. We don’t need a verbose and contemplative president. We need  a roll-up-your-sleeves-get-down-there kind of person. Hillary was and is that kind of person. She was the best choice to be president. But that’s not gonna’ happen right now. So the next best thing is she’s gotta’ be there to help him. You can’t win an election on a bumper sticker about ‘change.’ Every politician
promises change! What’s new?"

Marjorie— what is “This” which you claim has gone “too far?” Are you talking about the ugly anger of the HRC supporters that the primary did not go their way? This is a democracy!!!! Are you and other HRC supporters going to persist in nursing your wounded feelings to the point of engaging in a scorched earth policy in the general election?

Who is to say that Obama can really change our Country…So you think its ok for Russia to do whats it doing to Georgia? I dont want to see this country fight in yet another War but I also dont like to see Georgia under attack by Russia just b/c and to hear what Obama said…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSIpU9eJwBc Wow that was pretty rough & scary…

It is exactly at this time in history that we need calm diplomacy. The Bush administration lead the government of Georgia on, goading Russia. Do you realize that if Bush had been successful in getting Georgia into NATO that we might be at war now ? Russia, and Putin ( a very scary man) are flush with oil money and power, they see us as weak and over extended because of Iraq & Afghanistan. That section of Georgia has always been in question, it is not an either/or situation. We can not afford get in a pissing contest with the Russians now. This is where the Bush administration had gotten us, a new cold war. We can’t afford Mccain and the leftover’s of Bush !

You say it was ok for Georgia to invade South Ossetia? Do you think it’s a conflict of interest that McCain speaks out so strongly on the side of Georgia when his top foreign policy advisor is a lobbyist for Georgia? Are you ready for the Neocon wet dream of a second cold war? Check out Pat Buchanan’s take on the Russian/Georgian conflict… and he is BY NO MEANS a Liberal: http://antiwar.com/pat/index_pat.html

That’s a wonderful article. No, it wasn’t OK for Georgia to invade, but Bush and his cronies led Saakashvilli on with all the dangerous talk of standing with them. They foolishly believed that we would jump in and back them up. This is dangerous stuff and we don’t need a another hothead in the white house.

Isn’t it a wonderful article? I wish I could pat Mr. Buchanan on the back myself for it… wow…. I would have never though those words would come out of my mouth.. er… fingers!

I hate to say it, especially as a woman that came of age at the beginning of the feminist movement. Some of these women are reminding me of little girls on the playground when they loose, they stamp their feet and say “it’s not fair ! ” Well, you’re right, it’s not fair. If Hillary ran the campaign at the beginning that she ran at the end, she would be the nominee now. I would have been happy, I would have voted for her. But she didn’t, and she lost. I can’t believe this is still going on. Did george Bush not teach us anything ? And life is not fair !!

EKA, I agree with you and it sort of makes me embarrassed for women. It is as though we are proving ourselves to be incapable of clear headed, non emotional political thought. “Well if my candidate doesn’t get it I am going to hate the other candidate and make sure he doesn’t win. So there!”

It pains me to say it, too, but HRC has been acting as the proverbial “woman scorned,” and those of her supporters who keep trying to hold Obama and the Dems hostage sound like sore losers. But it occurs to me that we are not giving sufficient due to those HRC supporters who are not buying into this, and who are supporting Obama now. They are in the majority, certainly. The problem is that this website is controlled by HRC supporters (and it’s their web site, so that’s fair, I guess) but we keep getting HRC pushed down our cyber-throats. This post is not going to endear me to the website, but think about it: are we getting a true picture of HRC supporters? We may be responding to fringe HRC supporters who would lead us down the McCain-Good-bye Roe v. Wade, etc. path. What do you think?

It is true that the majority of HRC supporters have moved on and are supporting Obama or else not yet ready to commit to supporting Obama, but are not as vocal as the PUMA types supporters are willing to throw the country away for yet another 4 years due to sour grapes. I keep wondering how anyone who supported Hillary Clinton on the issues could throw all that away with McCain, but maybe I am giving these people more credit than they deserve. Perhaps they were not with Hillary on the issues but only supporting her because she is a woman. However, Hillary deserves some of the blame for this because she encouraged this sort of behavior and now she can’t stop it.

WELL, you may have a point there, I never thought about that. Hillary’s biggest demographic is white women over 50, and except for Whoopie, that pretty much is the makeup of the founders of wowOwow. ;-) But to expand that demographic…. it is white women, over 50, with just a high school education. And what I know of these well known accomplished, women, doesn’t fit them. ( * care to jump in ladies ? )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akjXqfvLu28 and what the heck does he mean by everyone filling their tires to the right pressure size….come on

Laugh if you want… just a small thing like driving with your tires at the correct pressure, which most people don’t, can add MILES per gallon. Again, it’s a small thing, but it adds up. Nothing to ridicule.

I do it as does many others I know…right pressure in tires, but i dont see how that will solve anything right away….Laugh I will!

NO, and neither will “off shore drilling, right here, right now ” I’m no expert on oil but whatever little or much WE drill, has NO influence on the global price. The small thing of tire pressure will put money in your pocket right now.
