Liz Smith on NYPost Exit: 'I'm Just Part of the Great American Experiment and Second Big Depression' (Video)

Liz, 86, on CNN: ‘I already lived through the first one. [Laughing] I was a child in the ’30s. So, I’m prepared for this’

Liz Smith on CNN

Liz Smith was on CNN’s "American Morning" on Thursday talking about her New York Post departure when she said she, too, is an example of someone affected in this trembling economy. She even goes on to call this financial climate, which economists have labeled a "recession," the "second big Depression."

Her statement came after CNN host John Roberts read a letter written by Col Allan, editor-in-chief of the Post. The letter read:

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I must inform you the New York [P]ost will not renew your contract when it expires at the end of this month … Like so many other newspapers around the country, we are buffeted by unprecedented economic gales.

Roberts then said: "You’re in a position that so many find themselves in … We just got the jobless claims from last week in: More than 600,000 people are out there on the unemployment line. It’s tough times."

Liz, 86 — who has more experience than most who are suffering through this current "recession" — smiled and said:

I’m just part of the great American experiment and second big Depression. I already lived through the first one. [Laughing] I was a child in the ’30s. So I’m prepared for this.

Indeed, the Grande Dame of Dish has grand plans now that she’s been let loose from her Post column. Our darling Liz has her wowOwow.com website. I did not know Ms. Smith had changed her place.  Please, I just want to be able to read her no matter where she is.  And what on earth has she got to do with the bad financial times?  She is, always has been, and always will be the best columnist alive.  Fair, honest, never catty like some of the others.  I remember Louella and Hedda.  I hope I can keep getting on here.  Thank you.

I remember the Depression. My father had 2 jobs and I didn’t see much of him. I had one pair of shoes and my mother carefully cut linoleum to fit the inside when I got a hole in the bottom. Didn’t think anything about it because so many did the same thing. I used to bring a little boy home with me for lunch as all he had to eat was a slice of white bread, and men used to come to our back door for food, and my mother would make them, sandwiches. They would make a mark on the house for "food friendly" houses, and nobody feared them like the homeless today, because they weren’t bums, but honest men who had lost their jobs. I never felt poor, but our wants were far different then than they are today, so fewer sacrifices had to be made. We survived it, and will survive this too if the people don’t expect instant gratification. Liz is a survivor and this is a step forward for her, and a better step too…..I got off the main  subject of this post about Liz. …..sorry, but she survived the depression and it set me off.

Liz, you have always been a lady who didn’t put all her eggs in one basket - as the saying went — which is the smartest advice I would have for anyone any time.  But you - Liz - are not riding off to some sunset — and I have to laugh.  You will be read each day, heard, seen — and who wouldn’t want to be when they look as good as you do!! — and I know you were thinking privately on that interview:  ‘YOu don’t know me - I have only just begun!"

Every time I see something that mentions Liz’s age - I think "WHAT?  That can’t be right."   You look great & more importantly act great!

Ms. Liz you are the kind of lady I want to be when I grow up.  I love your articles, your attitude & your fortitude.  If Rupert Murdoch thinks he is going to save money by cutting you, he is an idiot.  That being said, I am very happy that you will be posting on Wowowow more.

Liz, do you know how much you are loved?  I did not see the CNN interview, but I did see your interview with Chuck Scarboro — you are one amazing woman.  Thanks for posting this one.  Bless you Liz.

%$#@* !@&*^!!
Liz is totally amazing, and just completely great and beautiful and her attitude for all of us going through this is inspirational. Can’t wait to read her Parade pieces, too! And man does she look beautiful in that clip. If my math is right Liz is 33 years old than John and they look like contemporaries! What is the secret….she showed us the inside of her fridge and all I remember seeing was a little booze! lol

Liz, Ouch. Are you OK? It has got to hurt after all these years. The resume of work at hand for you, is greater than most writer’s lifetime achievements. I count myself lucky to be able to read your words here. Thanks for your honest approach to your interviews. Glad to be back in the US with internet access to wowowow. This is a great meeting place.
