Liz Smith: David Foster, a 'Hit Man' With Heart

“No, I don’t think so. Barbra tested me years ago, and told me I just didn’t have it.”
“Barbra who?”
“Streisand.”
“The same Barbra Streisand who made ‘A Star is Born?’”
“Well, yes!”
“David, I think you can go get a second opinion.”
Liz’s phone rang again. As if reading Rosenberg’s mind, David said, “I can tell you my favorite moment working with Madonna. We were in the studio, and suddenly she stopped singing and lay down on the floor, moaning. I thought she was sick. ‘Madonna what’s wrong?’ She said, ‘I need a man. I mean, a real man!”
I asked, “What happened?”
David: “She got over it, and went back to the music. I didn’t volunteer and she didn’t offer. I just wasn’t her kind of man.”
Madonna’s loss, I’d say.

Before we parted, I did ask David Foster who he thought was the new sound, the new star — in music. He immediately said, “Charice.” She is the teenage Filipina beauty who first gained attention through appearances posted on YouTube. I asked her last name. David said, “It is ‘Pempengco.’ But forget that. This girl is going to be known by one name, like Cher and Madonna. I told her that, as soon as I heard her sing.”
Charice did appear for David in Las Vegas. She sang, “I Will Always Love You.”
Well, that’s the general feeling about this guy.
