Liz Smith Exclusive: Billie Jean King Says if Barack Had Taken Hillary, It Would Have Been a Landslide

Billie Jean King, Liz and Regis Philbin

I recently visited with the great champion Billie Jean King in her box at the U.S. Open right in the stadium that is named for this national treasure. We had a hectic chat because our mutual friend, the publicist Peggy Siegal was with us and we all talked at once. But I "think" I ferreted out a few Billie Jean opinions direct for wOw. Here goes …

Liz: Billie Jean, champ of champs and pioneer for all women, what do you think of the vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska? I know you are a stated voter for Barack Obama in the election.

BILLIE JEAN KING: Well, she’s funny. She’s a woman. She’s a barracuda. She’s a leader. She’s a beauty queen. I am not into hunting animals but I think she is doing a good job, all things considered. And she played sports! But, that is not enough for me to support her and McCain. There are still so many issues where we differ.  And as for the "experience" argument, I’d like t o say that no one needed that argument when Hillary was being considered.

LIZ: You were a big Hillary booster and so was I. Let’s look back; what did you think of the argument that Hillary could not be considered because Bill Clinton would be too divisive and on the scene had she been elected?

BJK: I think the president of the United States could and would put any interference, by anybody, even a family member, on the sidelines. The president can just say get off the grounds. I think if that’s the reason Obama didn’t pick Hillary for his vice-presidential candidate then he doesn’t understand that being the President — why, he would be "The Man!" Nobody could interfere with him. It would have proved he had the courage to take Hillary and believe he could control his own veep and his own cabinet and his own presidency. It would have made Obama look strong, unafraid of the Clinton myth and in control. And Hillary is no fool; I don’t think she would have tolerated Bill interfering once she got in office as either president or vice president. I believe if Barack had taken Hillary, it would have been the right thing to do, the right things for our country and it would have been a landslide.

LIZ: You were cute out on the court hitting a few balls with Regis Philbin but you let him "win" easily.

BJK: It was a gag, a joke. I didn’t want to make him look bad. But I have not played tennis for seven months. It feels good to be back in the gym. I had an operation on my stomach last January and I didn’t do sit-ups or exercise for seven weeks. It feels so much better now.

PEGGY SIEGAL: Billie Jean, I have terrible heartburn.

BJK: Well, ask your doctor, you could have reflux. It could be a number of things.

LIZ Heartburn can be an important symptom. I remember Gov. Ann Richards complained about it before she was diagnosed and died with cancer of the larynx.

Billie Jean, has having this big facility named after you and your inclusion on Life’s 100 Most Important Americans list changed your life in any way?

No Kill and Drill Palin
Nice interview. BJK is one savvy, steady, accomplished lady.

I agree with BJK about having Hillary as Obama’s veep (though I understand why he chose Biden). The only way McCain could have beat an Obama-Hillary ticket would have been to pick G*d as his running mate.

I disagree. I and so many women I know, who like Obama, would never vote for him if he had Hillary on the ticket. When it was clear that the numbers were not in her favor, she refused to concede defeat. I’m sure you remember when she said she’d have to take a few days to decide what she was going to do - what is that all about? It was all about Hillary and not the Democratic party. And then, detente had to be negotiated. In fact, the presumed nominee had to call on this would-be sovereign, and she was allowed to call a press conference several days later to announce that she was withdrawing from the race. That’s not the way it should have taken place. This self-serving melodrama was just too much — all because she had expected a coronation. Obama made a good decision to look elsewhere for a running mate.

I think that is sad. Hillary went the full gamut with her presidential pursuits because that was the right thing to do! It was the first time we have had a viable woman candidate for President! Anyone that believes anything less about Hillary’s accomplishments and her pursuit of the Presidency, in my opinion, is not very supportive of women. Nor, are they very progressive in all our endeavors as women to make a difference, to make real change in this nation - and the world, and to influence the positive direction of women’s rights. There are already too many women who believe they are actually supporting women, when they say things like: “As a woman I must take the backseat to my husband, that’s what the bible says…” NOT!

It was absolutely acceptable that Hillary go the full gamut. What wasn’t acceptable was the way she handled herself when the numbers clearly told her and the country that she would not be the Democratic nominee. I never said that I didn’t think she wasn’t entitled to run, but that didn’t give her the right to behave the way she did at the end. It was just poor form - bad sportsmanship — and I would have felt the same way had she been a man. And another thing … women who did not support Hillary are not necessarily women who aren’t progressive or not supportive of women’s accomplishments. Hillary was just the wrong woman.

I could NOT disagree with you more! I believe Hillary is most likely the ONLY woman right now, who could handle the job best. We have a lot of great, strong women in leadership positions, none that I could imagine as President, however.

I guess that’s what makes horse races. Isn’t it great that we live in a country where we can have different points of view and express them?

Wow & I hate math, and never did well in it. However, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to read results.. Hillary didn’t want to concede, because by the numbers.. SHE WON!!! Honestly though, I’m glad he didn’t make her VP- I STILL WOULDN’T HAVE VOTED FOR HIM!!

I ‘m still "Bitter"& voted against the Dems for the stunt they pulled- I joined "Democrats for McCain"& would do it all over again-

If Hillary had won on the Dem, the Hillary-Obama ticket would be a better ticket. Obama-Hillary yes, unbeatable, but Hillary-Obama would have been better for the country.
