Liz Smith: Once Wet Behind the Ears

Liz Smith

I don’t particularly want to relive anything, but if I have to choose I would say New York City in the ’50s when I first arrived green and eager. It was just five years after World War II and the city was glorious and the world was my exotic oyster.

Ha! I was in NYC in the 50s with a man I LOVED—until I became aware years later he was dishonest, how really sad—and he showed me around. For a long weekend. Nothing like being green to add glitter to all you see. Plus, this man had a sparkling dry sense of humor. Imagine that: youth; an adored man; and humor. What else is there? (Yeah, I know: honesty.)

Ms. Liz, I read your column when I was a teenager and when the local paper dropped it when I was in my 20’s I was disappointed. Years later I found it on the internet and it felt as if I was back with a dear friend. Thanks for sharing the decades with us.
