Liz Smith: Hillary Clinton Needs All the Help She Can Get

Liz Smith

Oh, for Pete’s sake, give the secretary of state a chance to get started before judging her in such a puerile manner. She and the vice president are longtime friends … she has known Dick Holbrooke for years (I’d say all the years he tried to become sec. of state himself) and she understands all about him and his ambitions … she is just poised to begin her very hard work putting things to rights in American diplomacy.

I think it’s childish for us to stand back and attribute crappy attitudes of jealousy and competition when none of us know exactly what is going on. But I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts, knowing Hillary Clinton, that she understands she can’t do it all by herself and that there are world problems aplenty, more than enough to go around.

She also knows that Holbrooke has his work cut out for him in trying to set things right with Pakistan. I imagine she’s rooting for him and strongly in his corner. He almost didn’t take this job; it was such a daunting one.

In this world, Hillary needs more smart people helping her, not less. I believe this State Department won’t have the chance to be a "petty competition" because there is too much at stake.

Thanks, Liz. I agree with you, and have been trying to point out to some here who think that she’s been benched that she’s to strong, smart and capable. I have every confidence that Hillary would tell the POTUS to shove the job if she felt the slightest bit that she was being “snubbed” or “benched.”

Typo - “too strong.”

Does anyone know how huge the State Department is or what they do? Why do people expect so much out of one human being after 4 short weeks. I think she’s doing a great job so far, good grief, she has to organize and administrate a gigantic department and be responsible for its many bureaus. As for Holbrooke, he is in one of the most difficult diplomatic jobs of his life.

Absolutely, Diana - and finally, we have someone traveling into other cultures that dresses appropriately. What a relief.

Hillary Clinton is one wise woman when it comes to foreign affairs.  I don’t worry about her one bit.

I just don’t think a lot of folks have a clue as to how huge the State Dept. is or all of the things it does.

lI am impressed about Hillary’s quick decision to send Mitchell to Israel and Holbrook to Afghanistan. I am sure Hillary is pulling the strings, she is a very capable woman. Hillary could become the best Secretary of State ever. By Hanne L.

Are any of us so naive that we don’t understand the many levels of Washington? Do we think that anyone - anyone at all - is sent out of the country without briefings in such depth that the person is knee-deep in knowledge of the individuals she/he will be dealing with, what should and can be said — and what can’t, what compromises will be acceptable as a first step and the ones that are “no-nos”. Do we not think there are what we might call “practice sessions” or some version of that with the hope that by doing this - throwing questions and statements out that may be said by others in countries visited - can be fielded expediently and well? Everything - down to the clothes to wear that are acceptable to certain countries, a variety of manners expected that certainly differ from our own country - are conducted by experts in that country and its workings. To the statement: “Hillary needs all the help she can get”, there are many things that we may worry about right now —- but ladies, when it comes to “preparedness” for meeting with the leaders of other countries, nothing is left to chance. Let’s bank on that big word TRUST — and move on from this topic.

Thank you, Joan.

And, how many people are under Mrs. Clinton? The State department is a huge, huge operation. Many duties.

What is this punctuation thing in the comments section?  Driving me crazy…

Way to go Liz, you tell them! Just because some people tried throwing everything they could at President Clinton, and all they could come up with was a week resistance to sex. And look what they did to our country when they had there chance. There 8 years did more damage to our country then our enemies could! The only thing that bothers me is that they might get away with it, other then being known as low lifes for the rest of there and there childrens lives.
