Liz Smith: Too Much Gustav, Not Enough Politics ... Is Sarah Palin an 'SNL' Skit Gone Wrong?

Palin/Wikipedia

“Nothing is more important than politics right now. The fate of this country is at stake. We are talking about the future of our children and grandchildren. I think that trumps weather conditions, reports and updates!”

That was a very agitated but deadly serious Chris Matthews, reporting briefly from the Republican Convention on Monday night. This was well after Hurricane Gustav had been downgraded to a tropical storm. It was obvious that despite some damage and about seven deaths, Gustav was not another Katrina.

Matthews was delivering his comment to his not-so-good friend Keith Olbermann in New York. Olbermann  appeared to have drunk the Gustav Kool-Aid and was busy reporting on the storm with the intensity he usually reserves for his embarrassing and infamous “Special Comments.”

With a pared-down convention starting up after the  Republicans were momentarily sidelined by a serious-not-devastating storm — which I believe will prove eventually to have been good for them … and with McCain’s veep pick Sarah Palin descending into Peyton Place territory …  and Barack Obama’s small bounce obliterated by the Palin surprise, Matthews was clearly hot to get to the meat of things political. (And so was I!)

Mr. Olbermann, who always seems to relish any discomfiture on Matthews’s part, was unwaveringly bombastic in sticking to his weather-tracking.

——————————

I have to hand it to Fox. As soon as Gustav was downgraded, and it looked as if New Orleans had been spared another knock-out punch, that network began covering other news. Of course, it was mostly news designed to defend Sarah Palin, criticize Democrats and excoriate the Daily Kos website for printing scandalous rumors about Palin and her daughter. But still, Fox went on with business. CNN and MSNBC Gustav-ed all through the night. (You’d think the ark was picking up family pets along the way.) Fox did return to “dramatic” coverage of Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera, brave and wind-blown, but at least they’d gotten their political shots in on a day the rest of cable was all wet.

——————————

For my money, the very best of TV Monday night was Charlie Rose talking to an eclectic panel comprised of Cokie Roberts, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Al Hunt, Mark Halperin, Walter Isaacson, Charlie Cook, Ed Rogers and Ed Rollins. They called Palin’s appointment by every adjective from “brilliant” to “insane.” It was just great to see these great minds ruminate and run all over the place. They seemed to be enjoying themselves.

——————————

I personally think the choice of Palin was a shockingly cynical political maneuver from a guy who likes to shoot from the hip and follow his gut instincts. But McCain’s  choosing Palin is very likely to be successful.

And yet, for all of Palin’s lip service to Hillary Clinton, this is not really about those “disaffected” Hillary women. This is a direct appeal to the ultra-conservative base that has always eluded McCain, a base he once disparaged. Palin was a strong supporter of Pat Buchanan, back in the day. Does she still share his super-conservative ideals? For instance, his attitude toward Israel? And things of that ilk. I not only think she does but I think  inquiring American minds need to know. (It will be fascinating to see what Pat’s little American Conservative magazine now has to say; it has been ruthless in attacking the Bush administration.) Buchanan himself, excitable on a normal day, almost exploded with joy the morning Palin’s name was announced. As far as he and many in the GOP are concerned, she will — one way or another — be the next president of the United States.

Still, maybe this is all a wild and crazy joke, a “Saturday Night Live” skit taken to extremes. Because every time you see the attractive Gov. Palin, you think — Tina Fey! And these two women are only a few years apart in age.

Lorraine, Agreed. However if the Senate is split 50-50, there would be strong arguments on both sides for whatever the issue was. Half the Senators would be happy with her vote, the other half not so happy. Since the Democrats are currently in the majority, chances are the 50-50 split will not occur often enough to agonize over.

Marjorie, Charlie’s covereage last night included Sens Hatch and Dreier. And the historical perspective of both conventions as well as the biographies of the players is always faschinating-given by Dorris Kearns Goodwin. When Charlie Rose has interviewed McCain directly, I always come away with a deeper appreciation for the man and his accomplishments beyond his 5 yrs in the Hanoi Hilton.

BG mom, Okay. I used to be a great fan of Charlie Rose — never wanted to miss a show. Where I live, his show is on in three time slots: 11:00 p.m., noon and 6:00 p.m. (next day). Great accessability. I started to tune in to the show you mention, and when I heard him prompt the speaker to retell once more how wonderful Obama’s speech was, I switched him off. Granted, I propably missed a good show. He was so obviously against Hillary that I just lost a taste for him. Maybe after November I’ll soften, because he does bring a great selection of people together.

I just want to clarify something I read over at the LibraryJournal site. Palin did try to fire the librarian, not because of the ban issue, but because she did not support her election. She did fire the Police Chief who had a contract with the city for that same reason. However, she did ask the librarian if she would have any problems with “censorship”. Nothing came of it, but the fact Palin would ask such a question, and may have abused her power when he fires someone without cause who is under contract, makes me uncomfortable.

Liz, too much of the hurricane coverage was the typical visual nonsense. Without the visual element, there wouldn’t have been much reason for the networks to continue wall-to-wall coverage on Hurricane Gustav, once the immediate threat had passed. Even at night-time, we kept seeing hours-old video footage that obviously had been shot during the daytime, when the storm was at its peak. That’s like TV-8 in Grand Rapids. Four hours after a city hall meeting over whatever, you’ve got a reporter doing a “Live” report outside of an empty building - the visual theme all over again. TV news has become way too dependent on visual elements to tell a story, to the point where there often isn’t even a story to report. There is always other news going on: the convention, the latest health news, the nightmare with Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick refusing to step down after a series of scandals, and Gov. Granholm asking the state Supreme Court whether she has the authority to remove him.

Liz - great perspective. The news media always takes a story, then beats it to death. Agreed, Fox news is a little slanted to the right, but so is MSNBC and CNN to the left. A little to much bashing of Palin’s daughter. As you quoted Matthers ‘“Nothing is more important than politics right now”, the daughter is not a story. As Americans we should all be standing up like in the movie Network “I’m fed up and not going to take it any more” Please talk about the politics slanted any way you want, but leave families alone. News media do your job, if they still know how to do their job. I need to start taping Charlie Rose as I’m usually in bed by the time his show comes on. Always love to read your stories. This from an ex-Texas girl myself.

liz…great article, as usual…i hate to say it, but at first blush, there is something fishy going on with sarah palin..every woman who has had children knows you dont climb on a plane for a 8 hour flight when you are about to give birth…personally, i believe trig palin is the son of bristol palin…if he is, what his grandmother is doing is shameful…she and mccain should be ridden out of town on a rail anyway…just more ‘politicking’ in the good old u s a…do we expect anything different any more??? NO….duh….

If choosing Palin is ” a direct appeal to the ultra-conservative base” then I am confused - the Palin family is pictured on stage. Bristol has been on stage and now we learn that Levi will be joining them - the saga of Bristol is not being treated as a “private family matter” by Sarah or the citizens of Wasilla and now, because of the announcement Bristol’s pregnancy is receiving world wide attention. Please tell me how High School Teachers across America are supported to increase the ratio of H.S. graduating seniors, encourage students to post-pone sex by saying NO, [the only method of contraception they are legally able to teach] while a major political candidate is sashaying across the national stage with two High School drop-outs [Bristol and Levi] who are pregnant, will soon marry and since they are underage they will need their parents signature. This may be a heartbreaking story for any family but to feature this family dynamic as a role model from and for “the ultra-conservative base” of the GOP flies in the face of how conservatives measure the success of High School Teachers. Are we asking H.S. Teachers to promote values that do not apply to families and in fact, we applaud families by collectively trivializing the value of role models when “stuff happens”? We are shocked that our kids read about and use as a role model Brittney Spears younger sister who was pregnant at 16 - the difference - is it OK at 17 but not at 16 or are there different rules for different families? This is all very confusing…

Exactly! the question each person MUST ask themselves, every single moment, is ‘What are we teaching our children?” To ignore, to lie? to court double standards? that fame allows privilege outside the morays of common sense and community?

And Bristol was only 16 when she became pregnant and Levi had noted on his computer that he never wanted to have children. This is a farce. She pushes for abstinence but can’t even get it to work in her own home. But that doesn’t cause her to stop and think that maybe there are better ways out there. I am sure her daughter was never given a chance to think for herself and she rebeled in the way she could.

I too, am addicted to the Charlie Rose Show, and still remember the night he interviewed Obama for the ‘first time at this table’. I maintain that is was Charlie who first, in public, encouraged Obama to run for office…and I still remember the puzzled look on Obama’s face, when he realized Charlie was indeed very serious. I began my research on Obama, back then, before he made his decision, and continue to do so. And just a few days ago, began my research on Palin, with understanding that as long as she hasn;t done much, I will have time. I do not find it abnormal that people are micro-managing their research on Palin—-heck even I am guilty of that! What I do find abnormal, is that so much effort has been made to ‘create the soundbite’, for all parrots to learn, whether there is truth , or no truth. Of course, this has much to do with the lack of time, for the public to ‘vett’ Palin, before the convention….STILL, I feel as though there is a massive propaganda effort at large, to convince the masses that elephants can fly!!! Parrots bore me when all they have to say is what they are taught to say—-no thinking allowed. Something that REALLY caught my attention was a David Gregory interview, last night, on MSNBC, with Rick Davis, McCains’ campaign chair. I wish the clip could be re-shown over and over and over…so that EVERYbody could see, that perhaps, there is a lack of confidence in Palin, by the RNC itself! And I dare say, there is great fear. Gregory asked Davis a question about Palin, and Davis, when answering the question referred to Palin as ‘FAILIN’, and then corrected himself…..my thinking? Insiders were asked to move fast with no preparation time allowed, and human nature as it is, were darned mad about it!

It is a situation of if you do cover the hurricanes or you do not ..you will be seen as not caring about what happens to others in these storms. I love the give and take on the Charlie Rose shows and I have been watching them this week at the convention too.! Just a thought, If it was a democratic convention there would not be this ??? on the vp. and his or her family. Period . I never heard anyone talk about Biden and I am sure he is spotless {not} and my homestate is delaware too. There is too much of this anti woman and because she is a conservative at that and I always thought in the clinton years that CHARACTER does not matter… sick of all of this hog wash that the media thinks is important.. WE ALL HAVE MINDS and can think for ourselves and all of you put your pants on the same way… one foot at a time and not so important as anyone else is in this political election… get a grip please!!! carla
