Liz Smith: Nancy Pelosi, Buy a Clue!

Nancy Pelosi and President Obama © AP

“Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them but I can look up and see their beauty and try to follow them.”

So wrote Louisa May Alcott.

——————————

Today is the first full day of the presidency of Barack Hussein Obama, and millions of people in this country and around the world are peering far into the horizon, hoping that aspirations for their county and themselves can be reached. You could power the state of Texas with the good-will energy that has swept the country. (Though maybe that’s not a good metaphor since Texas is still very much a red state.)

I hope people realize that President Obama is but a man, and the world won’t change in an instant. You see that today is like any other day, yes? (Although we are still emotionally hung over from yesterday’s historic event.)

Give him a chance. Change takes time. Republicans can’t be counted on to jump on board with all of Obama’s plans — though I sense relief that he hasn’t, you know, made Bill Ayres Secretary of Defense, or some equally crazy appointment that the right-wing blogs were predicting.

I’m more worried about the Democrats and their mumbling about taking members of the Bush administration — perhaps even the ex-president himself — to legal task for eight years of ineptitude and possibly worse. Please! Nancy Pelosi, buy a clue. When your president talks about turning the page, he doesn’t mean to have the country and media embroiled and obsessed with Bush and company for ages ahead.

I don’t want to see or hear or concern myself with anything Bush from now on. Leave them all to heaven.

Or … wherever.

——————————

One more point. There’s lots of talk over the airwaves about how the election of Barack Obama to the highest office in the land proves “anybody can become president.” OK, it’s a big push forward, no doubt about it. But let’s wait on that sweeping judgment until there is a Jewish president, an atheist president, a gay president, an unmarried (modern-day) president, an Asian president, a Latino president, a Muslim president. And folks, let’s not forget — a woman president!

Oh, and I just love the praise we’re getting from abroad on America’s big step forward. I’ll take all that with a grain of salt until Britain, France, Italy, etc., elect a person of African descent to lead them.

Good article. Of course, it’s always a good article when you express my POV. Pelosi Dems have to get over Bush. He’s retired. He’s former. He belongs to the historians, now. Let them decide what his legacy is.

Marjorie C, I agree with your post. Pelosi Dems are wallowing in the mud. As Obama said, “get up, dust yourself off…”

Deber, What’s a “Pelosi Dem”? Of all the Democrats I know (and I know plenty), not one agrees with her on this and most other issues. She may be the Speaker, but she doesn’t speak for the average Dem. Part of “dusting ourselves off” must include shedding labels.

Susan: Part of “dusting ourselves off” must include shedding labels. That’ll take a while, but I do agree with you. To me a Pelosi Dem would be those who keep her in office, her constituancy. She’s not done a good job, yet voters keep electing her. Kinda like Barney Frank.

Good Morning, Pelosi remnds me of the Book “The Peter Principle”> Since becoming Speeker Of The House, she has declined in her postion as a CAli. Rep and she has gotten lost in a vendeta attitude. I do not think She could be Re-Elected. Respect is tumbling for her all around…ANd well, no more Barneys!!!

Yes, that’s how I see it as well, Jennifer. Those of us from CA know that she wasn’t always as she is now. It’s sort of strange, because once I really did like her. She may have indeed risen to her level of incompetence. Her vendetta approach is not appreciated, nor is her timing.

Well here I am, in full support of prosecuting Bush, Cheney, Rumseld, Rice, Powell and Wolfowitz…. disliking the heck out of Pelosi, and being an admirer (in general - but not on every point) of Barney Frank. I just ever seem to run with the pack, I guess. But my favorite Congressman of all time is Henry Waxman. Love that man!

Oh my gosh, My Alias! I agree with every word you’ve written! Bravo!

I also agree, with a couple of tweaks. I would drop Colin Powell from the list because I think he was duped, manipulated, and used because he is a man of honor and people trusted him more than any true Bushie. I consider him as much a victim as Victoria Plame. Just my opinion, most see it differently. I would add David Addington and John Yoo, the people behind the permission slips authorizing abuse of power. As for Pelosi, she has seemed a bit drunk with power to me ever since she became Speaker. I didn’t know of her before that. Waxman has been my hero these past two years!

Absolutely agree! I want them to be held accountable. I want a financial accounting as well — just who, in that administration, got very, very rich on our backs? I want them prosecuted for war crimes. Bush and his cohorts have left this country in a shambles and I want them answerable. I’m angry and will not get over it.

Marjorie- Yes Pelosi and Frank-voters still elect them and I would like to know “why?”

Marjorie, maybe we should all stop linking entire groups of people to the thoughts and actions of a single politician. When Nancy P. creates a stir, let’s point fingers at her — not at her AND her supposed minions. As citizens, I think we’ve gotten into the habit of throwing everyone under the bus when a one or two politicians act up or act badly. If we could only start breaking down that “us-them” mentality, we might be able to get something accomplished. Not to mention foster less hostility amongst ourselves. There will always be people who live off of conflict, people who create it when there isn’t enough in their minds. These people thrive in a herd mentality, but we don’t have to become like them. How simple and reassuring it would all be if ideas and decisions were always black and white. Unfortunately, that’s not reality, especially in politics.

marjorie, what good is it to have laws if we don’t use them? nixon’s pardon begat iran-contra. reworked nixonians became vice president and secretary of defense under bush, who did not rein in their worst instincts, but instead gave them free rein to subvert the constitution. we must bring their worst abuses to account. my complaint about nancy pelosi is that she did not let john conyers hold impeachment hearings early in 2007. if someone commits murder, do you say: “don’t worry about it?”

” … a Jewish … atheist … gay … unmarried … Asian … Latino … Muslim … woman …” Oh Liz! You’re right on target once again. We’ve come a long way, but so much farther to go …
