Liz Smith: Oh My Foes and Oh My Friends!

I see the nation has been rendered half hysterical — maybe wholly hysterical — over the possibility of Sarah Palin as vice president of the United States. Again, we are a divided nation, half for her, half against her. I simply urge a slightly cautionary wait-and-see. Let’s calm down just a little. We ain’t learned or seen nothing yet. And I don’t believe the legitimate media has been on her case; she was simply sprung on the world overnight so there was a lot to be learned. (We are over-familiar by now with Barack Obama and everyone else in the political spectrum, but the governor of Alaska gave us a whopping kick of curiosity.)

The viciousness being attributed to media comes directly from the overkill of unedited, unsupervised blogging on the Internet and from the incessant talking heads on cable TV. And did you really believe the National Enquirer would just sit there waiting for her to be knighted? But believe me, almost everybody else is leaning over backwards. No one credible at the major networks or at big newspapers and magazines wants to be accused of being anti-Ålaska, anti-feminist, anti-privacy for children, etc.

So, if I may, let me recommend that if you want to read a balanced assessment of Sarah Palin, go to the new Newsweek where she is on the cover under the headline "PALIN-TOL-OGY." This is an excellent example of how this brand-new candidate sees the world and what is known and unknown. If people can just stop bashing one another over Sarah Palin, in a very few weeks — after she has opened herself up to press questioning and after she has jousted with Joe Biden — we will know more. She has already set her most important face-to-face interview with the estimable Charles Gibson of ABC; he gives everybody a fair shake. Now, if you think you already know enough just from the obvious facts at hand, don’t you think you still ought to give her a chance in open forums? After you’ve seen her in action, after you’ve studied your favorite commentators and both her supporters and detractors, you’ll have better arguments for and against.

I’ve been reading reader responses on wOw and the mind boggles at how bright, how articulate, and just how fair and then how mean-spirited some of you can be. Normal, I suppose. But, for instance, I love and honor my friend Whoopi Goldberg who was recently taken to task for not expressing her own "opinion" enough on "The View." I love that show, but this isn’t "The View." That TV hour is a part of show business. Whoopi is the lead cat and if she doesn’t display some reserve at expressing her opinions it’s because she is there to marshal thoughts and talk, not to always be shouting out her opinions. "The View" is an entertainment, and Whoopi and Barbara Walters are there to run things and keep the troops from rioting. They are in a managed "entertainment" and some of that means, containing potential riots. And it is also "entertainment" that depends on people like Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Joy Behar to offer divisive, excited comment.

No, "The View" exists for its own reasons. The wOw site exists for you to say pretty much anything you want. Whoopi, too. To be down-to-earth and sincere. We are here exchanging thoughts, feelings and heartfelt sentiments. So just be thankful that the wOw site exists where Whoopi can say any damn thing she pleases. Nobody can get away with doing anything they damn please on TV; look at Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews. Everybody in TV has a boss. The wOw site doesn’t really have any bosses. We are all here for you and we are all equal.

Hi Sherrie, If it is me that you were referring to with respect to economics, I am not trying to “sell” you anything. I am providing an analysis by two well respected (Brookings Institution and Urban Institute) non-partisan think tanks that compare the economic agenda of both candidates. It has been updated as of 9/2/08, and includes policy statements, candidate statements and senior advisor statements from both Senators Obama and McCain http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/UploadedPDF/411749_updated_candidates.pdf There is nothing in this study that reflects anything about Bush other than the current budget projections, from which both candidates base their projections. If you look through all my posts on this site, I have been consistently independent, and if anything, slightly favor a more liberal agenda. I will not accept your inaccurate characterization of my opinions, and ask that if you want to discuss facts, stick to them.

I think all the hysteria is due to one simple fact, both sides, love her or hate her (doesn’t seem to be any inbetween), recognize that she could tip the balance and result in the GOP winning in November. The Republicans have new energy, and a new message —grabbing Obama’s “Change” message, and the Dems realize that not nominating Hillary may have enormous consequences.

The fact that no one will let the bashing rest to me is just crazy. I think Palin was answering the” opinions” Obama was putting out about her PRIOR to her speech-so she came out swinging. Obama is digging his own grave with this/trying to beat down Palin who isn’t even running for president. HE has ”CHANGED” in my mind—and I thought HE was the ONE who would bring us all CHANGE—but it is the same ole same ole….. This has become a nasty nasty campaign— I am soooooo tired of ”I AM RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG” A house divided will always fall.Looks like we haven;t come a long way if even us modern women can’t agree to disagree and talk without trashing.Sad. Mc Cain even had a TV slot after the Dem Convention to congrat Obama on this historic election—I thought that was class….. I am from” Massachusetts” if someone wanted to know—and it was a letter from Obama Camp in ”Longmedow”—the most elite neighborhood you can imagine.’ All wealthy people, I do not live in Longmedow. I joined both Campaigns (dem/rep)because I am an Independent and want to see both sides of this. To me the Obama letter to me was a no class move of a scared bunch of Dems….. More and more my friends and I who are mostly Dem and Idep. are leaning towards Mc Cain because he is the only one speaking issues and not trash…….

Liz has a very good point in that I think we need to give her enough rope. She’s a hothead, not very bright, and a bully at heart. If, indeed, for example, the rumor is true that she called Sen. Obama “sambo,” good, let’s wait for her to do it on national television, etc. If what the Alaskans are saying in great horror about her are true things, she’s going to show her stripes, because she thinks she’s all that, but really she is provincial, and this is the major leagues. So I agree with Liz on that one.

BTW, Liz…..Thanks for confirming what we already suspected: Whoopi Goldberg is being muzzled to allow Elisabeth Hasselbeck to sprew Republican talking points and vitriol.

oh, i am sticking my foot in it and i know it, but it is not about Gov. Palin. It is about the deceptive world of politics.Liz i know that you are an intelligent woman, and i understand your point. Let it be about the issues. That is what it should be about, but in this case, let her out in public with out someone telling her what and when to say.The republican party has advisers that have studied the forum for years. it is my belief that they waited so long to introduce her for he very reason of something new.She is new, and the media has paid more attention to her family situations rather than her politics. That worries me.I do not like anything I have read or seen about her. I just feel manipulated.

Me too, amy lamb-hall……feeling VERY manipulated. (And it seems to me they waited so long to introduce her so that by the time we could verify who this VP candidate REALLY is, it would be too late.) What I cannot figure out is why the great intelligent Republican women aren’t demanding to know more too? If the facts show Palin to be a woman of substance, the Republican ladies could thumb their noses at us and cast a vote with knowledge-based conviction. But if she is as shallow as she seems and has no substance, why in the world would anyone in EITHER party want such a dangerous person in the White House? Why are they keeping Palin hidden? You said it, amy…manipulated…. to the max.

What about her brain and her ethics, Bella?” By Maurine H on 09/09/2008 11:56 am Pssst, ummm, Maurine, those are republicans you’re talking to. They don’t speak that language.

We are all lambs to the slaughter, and the mass media are the sheepdogs. I can understand the not-so-bright falling prey to the daily drama that is Sarah Palin, but the thinking people surprise me. We’ve been herded over a cliff. and hit bottom days ago. I’m with Star, I’ve had enough and am taking a break.

Thanks, Liz, for your down-to-earth assessment. I am an observer by nature, a writer by trade, so I am fascinated with the reactions, myself included, to the Sarah Palin frenzy. Why are we getting so worked up over this? There must be something deeper going on than mere politics.
