Liz Smith Presents Fashion's Simon Doonan in an Anti-Hockey-Mom Mood

Liz Smith
Pretty soon, dear wOws, we won’t have Sarah Palin to kick around any longer and then – what will we do? Well, maybe we will have the governor who will then be the veep. In that case I don’t want to miss a few fond words about this phenomenon who has so enlivened, enraged and enchanted the 2008 election, either before she goes home to Alaska or moves into the White House.

And now not my words, but the words of a fashion arbiter who has become a celebrity himself. I do mean Simon Doonan, the fashion maven of Barney’s on Madison Avenue in New York City.

Recently our Etceterist told us all about how a well-known Washington socialite has been advising Sarah Palin on how to dress. Well, that was fascinating but now comes the man who helped make Barney’s famous – Simon, and following is a bit of what he wrote in last week’s New York Observer:

“Sarah Palin and I are opposites. We have nothing in common. Simply put: I believe in the power of style; she is a veritable anti-fashion crusader.

“While La Palin herself is a snappy, pulled-together kind of a chick – expertly applied maquillage, sculpted tight black silk shantung suit – her utterances vehemently discourage and disallow any stylish expression among the rest of us. It’s that typical beauty queen mentality: I’m the glam ruler and y’all are my earnest-but-dowdy serfs. According to the Republican candidate, we, her subjects, are a homogenous nation of ‘hockey moms and Joe Six-Packs.’  This relentlessly panache-free vision of the United States is gruesomely uninspiring, to say the least.

“In Sarah Palin’s America, there are no Diana Vreelands, hip-hop queens, Janis Joplins, Zelda Fitzgeralds, Gwen Stefanis, Edie Sedgwicks, Annie Oakleys or Babe Paleys. There is a chilling absence of stylish daring. In its place are hockey moms, masses and masses of hockey moms — all attired, one imagines, in those denim dresses, worn over turtlenecks, Uggs in winter, Crocs in summer. Holiday-themed sweaters

“My America, I am happy to report, is bursting with swaggering boulevardiers and fashion-lovin’ divas. My ‘Main Street’ is filled with showoffs who live to gird up their loins with a stylish garter or two.

“ … So, gosh darn it, style mavens of America, show Sarah Palin what you’re made of! Go shop! Go feed the economy! Go gussy up! And, for God’s sake, take a hockey mom with you.”

Sorry, Gator, I meant LSU. I watched part of it on CBS. The Gators “swamped” them, for sure. I think Penn State and Texas are the best teams this year, but I hope Michigan upsets the Nittany Lions (Penn St) this Saturday. Doubtful, considering my Wolverines are pretty bad this year. Florida looks pretty good. When does it play Florida State?

James……..A chill went up my spine when you said Alabama. LOL When they re-structered the SEC - they split to East and West. So we don’t have to play Alabama this year in the regular season. However, should we win out in the Eastern Division , and they should win out in the Western Division, we will have to play them for the SEC Championship in Atlanta in December. That might be a really incredible game. Penn State and Texas are great this year. I’m like you, would love to see Michigan upset Penn State. Rich Rodr (Sp) has his hands full this year. He might wish he was still coaching West Va, But, James, as they say, in college football, “any given Saturday”. Yeah, Florida looks pretty good — great speed. A lot of great play makers this year. They did stink it up against Mississippi. That’s what happens when you are looking past a team toward the BIG one. We play FSU on November 29 — always the last game of the season. It’s a huge rivalry in the state. Just for bragging rights. Sorta like Michigan and Michigan State. Oh, by the way, can you see that I love college football? We are season ticket holders and NEVER miss a game. I will definitely be a Wolverine this weekend!!!

Yeah, I’d like to check out a game in The Swamp sometime. Florida-FSU is always on national TV, so I always watch that. Even back when Steve Spurrier was coach. I’ve been into college football since about 1970. My father was a great boxer at Michigan State, but I noticed State was always losing when I was a kid, so I got into Michigan, instead. Wisest decision I ever made, as Michigan’s the winningest program in the history of college football. But they’ve fallen on hard times in recent years, and 8 of the 11 offensive starters graduated after last season (offensive tackle Jake Long was the number-one overall pick in the NFL draft in April, going to the Miami Dolphins). Then, as you know, Lloyd Carr retired as head coach, and Rich Rodriguez came in as the new coach from West Virginia. Michigan’s made it to a bowl game 33 straight seasons, but I think that streak will come to an end this year. Wasn’t LSU ranked 3rd nationally when the Gators chomped them last Saturday? Alabama’s got a really good team, too, from the South. I was aware of the SEC and Big 12 conferences breaking off into divisions several years ago. It’s north and south divisions in the Big 12. I was happy to see Texas upend top-ranked Oklahoma this past Saturday, as well. I can remember rooting for the Longhorns in 1970 when they won the national championship; I was 8 years old. Also in that era, Bert Jones of LSU, John Cappiletti of Penn State, Gordon Bell of Michigan, and my favorite, Anthony Davis of USC.

James —-this year the Florida/FSU game is in Tallahassee. So the “Swamp” will rest that weekend. You mentioned Steve Spurrier — what fun it was to watch his teams. He was often critized for “running up the score” — his idea was — “if these kids want to make another touchdown no one should tie their hands”. I tend to agree with that philosophy. Is Jake Long the son of Howie Long? I know he has a son playing football somewhere. I loved to watch Howie when he played for the Dallas Cowboys. Yep, LSU was ranked 3rd — Gators were ranked 12th — so we moved up to 5th. Good place to be at this time of year. But, I hope they stay up there. It seems, in this day and age - no team goes undefeated and goes to the National Championship, Must be the parity in college football today. Of course, I am very proud of our Tim Tebow. Not just as a great Quaterback but because he is such a wonderful young man. I know I’m a Gator, however, I was so proud of him winning the Heisman. He was our third Heisman winner - Steve Spurrier (in his era) Danny Wurffel also. Also, we had a couple of “Hall of Famers” — Emmitt Smith and Jack Youngblood. I am older than you but Bert Jones, John Cappiletti (Heisman winner), Gordon Bell, Anthony Davis (Didn’t he win the Heisman?). All those guys I remember well. I remember John Cappiletti’s speech when he won the Heisman — still get tears in my eyes. Question — do you think that Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden will EVER retire? LOL

Hi. No, Jake Long isn’t the son of Howie Long. But the number-three overall draft choice in April was Chris Long, who IS the song of Howie Long. Chris Long is a defensive end for the St. Louis Rams. Jake Long, the top pick in the college draft, is an offensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins. No, A.D.(Anthony Davis) didn’t win the Heisman Trophy. Archie Griffin, the Ohio State running back, won it in both 1974-75, the only player to win it twice. Tebow has a chance. I do think JoePa and Bobbie Bowden will retire within the next couple of years. Paterno has had to watch the last two games from the press-box level because of his sore knees (remember, he got hurt last year?). He’s riding high, right now, though, with the Nittany Lions running roughshod over every opponent. Yes, John Cappilletti’s speech in ‘73…I remember it. That’s a year Michigan fans will never forget. We went undefeated, tied Ohio State 10-10, but the Big Ten athletic directors voted 6-4 to send Ohio State to the Rose Bowl instead of Michigan, but Michigan quarterback Denny Franklin suffered a broken collarbone in the OSU game, and they were worried he might not be healthy by the time New Year’s Day rolled around (he was). So, Michigan sat home - no bowl game - even though it went undefeated in 1973! Back then, the Big Ten only participated in one bowl game. Mike Lantry missed two long field goal attempts by inches in the closing minutes that would’ve won it for Michigan. The following year, in 1974, I cried when Lantry missed yet another field goal by inches at Ohio State, and Michigan lost, 12-10.

Lady Gator, we have some common ground after all, and it’s a college gridiron! Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, Florida … they ALWAYS WIN the national championship! It’s Penn State’s turn!!! Go Lions! Go Bears! (Nah. Cal, you really know how to disappoint.)

Hey Susan B. — Right on! Go Gators! Wouldn’t it be great though if Joe Pa could win a National Championship? I wonder if that would be the deciding factor for him to retire? Naw! As I said to James…I think he and Bobby Bowden (FSU) will be around forever. I like all the teams you mention except when they play my Gators. And, Ohio State —-well a couple of years ago, we made a trip to Arizona and put a knot on them. It was such a beautiful win. We had been there for three days and all we heard was OSU and the Buckeyes. Sorta sweet. You know Susan, I really think that there will be a lot in common among all of us when this election is over. I look at the other threads and it amazes me how everyone comes together. I hope that proves to be so — I really like being on this site — even though, at times, it can get a little hairy! LOL However, with the exception of a few, I think we are already making progress. Thanks for the post — have a great weekend.

I have family in Ohio (I live in California), and all I hear from them this time of year is Bucks, Bucks, Bucks. So I must tell you that I (secretly) am happy whenever OSU gets whupped. :-) You’re right about this election driving a wedge between people who otherwise would enjoy each other’s company. My grandma forbid talk of religion and politics under her roof, and for good reason. Have a great Saturday! And here’s to progress.

In other words, I’m not Sarah Palin. The entire damn planet is in danger, ecosystems are collapsing, the mild warming is getting dangerously close to entering a vicious cycle that nobody will be able to reverse, species are vanishing at an ever faster pace, and the town I live in, no matter how pleasant it may be at the moment, is not an island. If it were, it would be in danger of going under, as real islands are. So, it comes to this: Are we a nation of complete and utter imbeciles? It’s been the better part of a century since H.L. Mencken predicted this danger with these words: “The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts’ desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” I’d be the last to question the moronicity of George W. Bush, but Sarah Palin is substantially dumber, bizarrely crazier, and dangerously and arrogantly less aware of her own shortcomings.” Time Magazine’s unequivocable rebuke of Palin on Troopgate and how it revealed the lying incompetent that she is: http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1849399,00.html The Palin’s un-American Activities: http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/10/07/palins_unamerican/ Associated Press: Palin Bonds Church and State http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081011/ap_on_el_pr/palin_church_and_state Palin’s Creepy Ambition Should Worry McHoover: http://www.alternet.org/election08/101685/sarah_palin%27s_almost_creepy_…
