Liz Smith Presents Fashion's Simon Doonan in an Anti-Hockey-Mom Mood

Liz Smith
Pretty soon, dear wOws, we won’t have Sarah Palin to kick around any longer and then – what will we do? Well, maybe we will have the governor who will then be the veep. In that case I don’t want to miss a few fond words about this phenomenon who has so enlivened, enraged and enchanted the 2008 election, either before she goes home to Alaska or moves into the White House.

And now not my words, but the words of a fashion arbiter who has become a celebrity himself. I do mean Simon Doonan, the fashion maven of Barney’s on Madison Avenue in New York City.

Recently our Etceterist told us all about how a well-known Washington socialite has been advising Sarah Palin on how to dress. Well, that was fascinating but now comes the man who helped make Barney’s famous – Simon, and following is a bit of what he wrote in last week’s New York Observer:

“Sarah Palin and I are opposites. We have nothing in common. Simply put: I believe in the power of style; she is a veritable anti-fashion crusader.

“While La Palin herself is a snappy, pulled-together kind of a chick – expertly applied maquillage, sculpted tight black silk shantung suit – her utterances vehemently discourage and disallow any stylish expression among the rest of us. It’s that typical beauty queen mentality: I’m the glam ruler and y’all are my earnest-but-dowdy serfs. According to the Republican candidate, we, her subjects, are a homogenous nation of ‘hockey moms and Joe Six-Packs.’  This relentlessly panache-free vision of the United States is gruesomely uninspiring, to say the least.

“In Sarah Palin’s America, there are no Diana Vreelands, hip-hop queens, Janis Joplins, Zelda Fitzgeralds, Gwen Stefanis, Edie Sedgwicks, Annie Oakleys or Babe Paleys. There is a chilling absence of stylish daring. In its place are hockey moms, masses and masses of hockey moms — all attired, one imagines, in those denim dresses, worn over turtlenecks, Uggs in winter, Crocs in summer. Holiday-themed sweaters

“My America, I am happy to report, is bursting with swaggering boulevardiers and fashion-lovin’ divas. My ‘Main Street’ is filled with showoffs who live to gird up their loins with a stylish garter or two.

“ … So, gosh darn it, style mavens of America, show Sarah Palin what you’re made of! Go shop! Go feed the economy! Go gussy up! And, for God’s sake, take a hockey mom with you.”

I love Palin’s eye glasses created by Japanese designer Kazuo Kawasaki. That’s it. Sorry.

It’s just a shame she has no vision even with them.

Next time I’ll do it from a helicopter. ;-)

I used to have to airborne-traffic reporting in radio from a Cessna-210, and we had to maintain a minimum height of 2,000 feet. Not easy to see from that height, so binoculars were used.

Just heard that one of the television helicopters in Houston went down this morning, killing pilot & camera man, wouldn’t having been laughing about any of it if I had know that. You have done a lot of jobs, sounds interesting.

What a tragedy, Bee. Prayers go out to the family members. Yeah, the problem with those choppers is that, if you have engine or propellor problems, good night Nellie! I flew in a single-engine aircraft, which is dangerous enough, but we flew at 2,000 ft, so if the engine were to cut out the pilot could glide her down. Still, from a news-gathering standpoint, you can get so much closer to the ground with a ‘copter, whereas Metro Networks (and others) require a minimum 2,000-foot flying height, for safety purposes. Plus, a ‘copter can hover over an accident/crime scene, whereas a plane can only make wide circles. They use special balancing equipment for the cameras to reduce vibrations. Otherwise, everything would be blurry. The two-way equipment has special filters built into the radio to get a counter-balance static and provide a clear signal above ground, otherwise the radio signal would be very distorted (or not audible, at all) between ground and aircraft. Usually, the reporter will wear a headset with a mouthpiece. Out of one ear you can hear the pilot’s frequency (and the conversation between pilot and airport), and out of the other you can hear the radio/TV station you’re communicating with on the ground.

Was just looking at it on line at Channel 13 Houston, you can see it is hard for the reporters to talk about it. Those people do a lot of good up there, their traffic and live reports and updates are a big part of the news. During hurricane Ike they really did a large part in letting everyone see the different areas that were hit. It seems those and the Life Flight helicopters have had several accidents recently. Maybe I am just remembering them because of this.

It used to frighten me a bit, being up there on windy days. One time, we got boxed in by a fast-moving storm front and had to land at a small airport about 20 miles away. It’s a lot different flying in small aircraft than large, where you’re above the clouds. At low levels, the clouds can move in fast. And on hazy days, it can be extremely hard to see sometimes. You have to remember building tops and the like in order to know where you’re at, in terms of reporting. For example, there are five major overpasses on US-131 south of downtown Grand Rapids. You can’t see street signs from up there or anything, so you count the overpasses to help you identify which is which. It takes time to learn the layout.

Came close to going up in one once, client had a shipment that Customs needed to examine and he offered to send us out int to Gulf to see it before it came into port, but Customs agent said no, sounded great to me. Watching play-offs now, since my Astros have been out for so long, I am a strange fan, I would like to see Manny go to the World Series and the Red Sox not make it.

I’ve been rooting for the Dodgers, just because Marlo Thomas said she used to go to the Dodgers’ games when she lived in L.A. decades ago. Also, I like Joe Torre, and felt he got a raw deal in New York. He led the Yankees to 15 straight postseason appearances (playoffs) and a couple World Series titles, but was only offered a (bad-faith) one-year deal after last season by Hank Steinbrenner. So, now he’s the Dodgers’ manager, and has taken them to within a few victories of the World Series, while the Yanks have missed the playoffs for the first time since 1993. Unfortunately, Philadelphia won Monday night and now lead the Dodgers 3 games to 1, with a chance to close it out in Game 5. Not that I have anything against the Phillies. My mother’s father, Burton Wayne, was signed by the Phillies, but died.

I should be for Phillies, grew up about an hour and half from Philadelphia but we were closer to Baltimore and went to Orioles games. But I won’t mind if they win. Just wasn’t for the White Sox since they beat the Astros in the World Series a few years ago. And I do get a kick out of Manny. A “personality”
