Liz Smith Presents Fashion's Simon Doonan in an Anti-Hockey-Mom Mood

Liz Smith
Pretty soon, dear wOws, we won’t have Sarah Palin to kick around any longer and then – what will we do? Well, maybe we will have the governor who will then be the veep. In that case I don’t want to miss a few fond words about this phenomenon who has so enlivened, enraged and enchanted the 2008 election, either before she goes home to Alaska or moves into the White House.

And now not my words, but the words of a fashion arbiter who has become a celebrity himself. I do mean Simon Doonan, the fashion maven of Barney’s on Madison Avenue in New York City.

Recently our Etceterist told us all about how a well-known Washington socialite has been advising Sarah Palin on how to dress. Well, that was fascinating but now comes the man who helped make Barney’s famous – Simon, and following is a bit of what he wrote in last week’s New York Observer:

“Sarah Palin and I are opposites. We have nothing in common. Simply put: I believe in the power of style; she is a veritable anti-fashion crusader.

“While La Palin herself is a snappy, pulled-together kind of a chick – expertly applied maquillage, sculpted tight black silk shantung suit – her utterances vehemently discourage and disallow any stylish expression among the rest of us. It’s that typical beauty queen mentality: I’m the glam ruler and y’all are my earnest-but-dowdy serfs. According to the Republican candidate, we, her subjects, are a homogenous nation of ‘hockey moms and Joe Six-Packs.’  This relentlessly panache-free vision of the United States is gruesomely uninspiring, to say the least.

“In Sarah Palin’s America, there are no Diana Vreelands, hip-hop queens, Janis Joplins, Zelda Fitzgeralds, Gwen Stefanis, Edie Sedgwicks, Annie Oakleys or Babe Paleys. There is a chilling absence of stylish daring. In its place are hockey moms, masses and masses of hockey moms — all attired, one imagines, in those denim dresses, worn over turtlenecks, Uggs in winter, Crocs in summer. Holiday-themed sweaters

“My America, I am happy to report, is bursting with swaggering boulevardiers and fashion-lovin’ divas. My ‘Main Street’ is filled with showoffs who live to gird up their loins with a stylish garter or two.

“ … So, gosh darn it, style mavens of America, show Sarah Palin what you’re made of! Go shop! Go feed the economy! Go gussy up! And, for God’s sake, take a hockey mom with you.”

I think that’s a rather well-put observation, Sandbee! James, must everything be a joke with you? (Only kidding, I hope you know.)

Nobody needs to worry about Sarah Palin in 2012. She will be back in Wasilla being a grandmother and local activist. I don’t like her ideas or “Best looking Girl in the Senior class” persona. But she looks efficient if you don’t listen to her words. Liz, most of us aren’t fashion mavens. At least I don’t think so. But it is fun to see the fashions and styles in L.A., NY and Paris etc. Your column should be titled, “Liz Explains it All.”

I am in Ireland at the moment and have been told by several people that “the world is laughing at you”… referring to the “circus” that is this election. Have not met a single person who prefers McCain over Obama, yet, I have not met a single person who believes the American people are smart enough to actually ELECT Obama over McCain. After 8 years of Bush, and after seeing Palin actually in a position of potential VP… they really don’t have much faith in the American voters.

DeBúrca, I was wondering where you were. It’s difficult to hear the point of view you describe. But who can blame them. Many of us don’t know how “smart” Americans are either. Have you seen Palin’s and McCain’s crowds shouting to “kill” and other terrible things … they’re awful sounds, but as Bob Dylan once said, they’re only pawns in the P/McC game. On another thread the wOw editors show a video of Joan Baez, which of course led me to Bob Dylan … Are you old enough to remember? If not, to get the whole message, you’ve got to listen to this piece all the way to the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUvQzgxTxmE&feature=related a pawn in their game

Thanks for that link, I love Bob Dylan! You know where I heard about the McCain/Palin crowds shouting racist remarks and “kill him”, etc.? In the Irish Times, complete with photos of the hateful, swooning crowd. Their true motivation is showing now. This is truly a point in history where the US can either choose a better path to redeem itself, or show its ugly head. That is the sentiment I am hearin and reading here and they are waiting to see what we do. I feel that they are very hopeful but afraid to get their hopes up at the same time… just like me I guess. The interest here is amazing, as is the amount of REAL coverage the election is getting. They are even televising the debates in their entirety.

De, Seen this: Just look at this video from a line of people waiting to get into a Palin/McCain rally. WOW! If Obama was there they would have killed him with their bare hands. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itEucdhf4Us Search “Sidewalk to nowhere” if the link doesn’t work…and keep the kids away. The language is inappropriate for them.

Well, you can tell where that crowd gets their “news”! That is one angry, misinformed, hateful crowd and when Obama becomes president I hope the Secret Service watches over him as no other before him because that element of this country is frightening. In fact, I’ll bet on some level FOX “news” , Hannity and Limbaugh are hoping for an Obama win just to fire up their hateful audience because it will probably increase their ratings because those people will need someplace to go to get thier hate fix.

… with good reason. I wish I was in Ireland! I had a similar experience in Italy this summer. One Italian told me that the Americans he runs into tend to fall into two camps: the thoughtful and the fearful. There you have it.

This is my exit piece… I joined this group because of the women listed on the masthead. I thought they were the owners and would contribute to the dialogue. To me, seems like most of them have abdicated their roles here. Few contribute besides Liz Smith. Over 90 percent of the emails are snide, hate-filled, one-sided and of no use to me. I expected dialogue. Ain’t happening here. I check the site daily and have concluded its not worth my time. I had high hopes and am sad its not working out. Even Tiffany doesn’t have its ad any more. Bye, bye.

Thanks for all the great links Wine. After a weekend of local news bites out of Falwellburg (Lynchburg,VA) where they’re brainwashing all the young voters they pressed into registering republican at Liberty U, I needed the change.

REBUTAL to The Wine Warrior .. “Whoa.. She really makes you blood-boiling mad, that Palin-person, doesn’t she? Can’t say I blame you, I -living in Sweden - am afraid of her too. I’ve been looking for an appropriate thread to post something - I guess this is as good a place as anywhere.” Here’s something I got in my mail box the day before yesterday, I’m gladly sharing it with all you smart people here!!! Enjoy (or don’t)!! I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..(hope I’m not offending anyone) * If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience. #Brilliant organizer – please! Massive voter fraud on a scale we have never seen in America. Vote fraud undermines all US Citizens #While representing Illinois, he denied your right to protect your family, in your own home, by banning firearms. #Have you read his “thesis” in Harvard. Bush received an MBA from the same college. Wallstreet is filled with these “intellectuals”. #He has NEVER been chairman of any committee. Go to their website and see for yourself. #He has been campaigning for two of those years, while applying for another job on taxpayer time and expense. Could you do that at your job? #He has NO executive experience at all. Nada. Never managed a budget! Never. * If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive. #Sarah was Chief Executive Officer of the town of Wasilla #SITTING Chief Executive Office of the State of Alaska with a $11Billion dollar budget! * If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian. #Sarah has been married more than 20 years while raising 5 beautiful children and running her home town and the entire State of Alaska *If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian. #Barack is currently under investigation for having an affair in Puerto Rico with one of his campaign staffers. She is gorgeous like that of Hale Berry. *If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society. #He has voted 4 times in Illinois for Infanticide. It IS true. Born-Alive Act! *If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America’s. #Her law firm received government earmarks from Barack’s legislation. Cronyism. *If you’re husband is nicknamed “First Dude”, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable. #Barrack has admitted to extensive drug use while in college. # 1996 Illinois: Three Socialist NewParty - members won Democratic primaries last Spring and face off against Republican opponents on election day: Danny Davis (U.S. House), Barack Obama (State Senate) and Patricia Martin (Cook County Judiciary).” OK, much clearer now.

Couple questions and comments. Hope I don’t offend anyone but I would like some clarification. Where’s the proof of voter fraud? I don’t think we need guns in our homes. Having lived in Illinois for about 4 years, I feel they needed to restrict guns. Have you read Obama’s thesis and did you know Bush graduated from Yale, not Harvard? How does being mayor of a very small town qualify anyone to run the entire country? And Palin’s only been governor of Alaska for about 21 months. From recent reports, it seems she has a rather spotty record so far. Being married for 20 years and raising 5 children doesn’t qualify anyone for high national office. Apparently, running Wasilla was actually a part time job and, again, she’s been governor less than two years. There’s nothing to be found on any affair in Puerto Rico. Sounds like an urban legend. Can you provide a link or something about the infanticide accusation? Again, it sounds like an urban legend or something that may have been grossly misinterpreted. And what does that have to do with teaching birth control? Don’t you think that’s far better than unwanted children, among other things? Palin accepted earmakrs for her state. Michelle Obama gave up her job with the law firm and there’s nothing to indicate that she had anything to do with any earmarks. What did the firm get them for, from whom and how much were they? A lot of people who grew up during and after the 60s did some dumb things, including experimenting with drugs. He got himself out of that milieu so it’s really a non-issue. And it wasn’t that extensive. Most of what I can find regarding the Socialist New Party comes from various blogs. We all have the right to belong or not belong to whatever party we choose. We can change parties, too, if and when we feel it’s the right thing to do. So what?
