Liz Smith: 'Reality' Intrudes on Madonna Premiere – Splits With Hubby Guy Ritchie

Madonna at the premiere of "Filth and Wisdom" © AP

But something fascinating occurred when Madonna arrived, something I’ve never seen before. There was one frantic cry — “She’s here!” — when she stepped onto the red carpet and slowly made her way in, talking to media and posing. And then, a kind of eerie silence descended. The cameras kept flashing (and flashing!) but the standard loud demands that she move closer, look this way, hurry up! were muted. The photogs even stopped fighting and elbowing among themselves. It was almost as if they feared she’d turn and leave if they didn’t give her some respect and breathing space. One grizzled and usually rude paparazzi said, “She’s not like the rest of them … she’s the queen. She’ll give us what we need.”

And she did.

——————————

Inside, before the film rolled, Madonna spoke: “You know, sometimes when you are successful in one area — I don’t mean to toot my own horn — other people seem to think you should never try anything else, never reach up or further in your career or life, and I say … f—k what other people think!” (This attitude is reflected in the movie itself, which was written by Madonna and Dan Cadan. It is evident  especially in the character played by “Filth and Wisdom’s” fantastical leading man, Eugene Hutz, who is funny, sexy, repulsive and oddly, endearingly vulnerable.)

Madonna replied, 'Oh, there always has to be a happy ending, right? ... And a sense of humor, if I can keep a sense of humor right now, I’ll be OK.'

The audience seemed to enjoy the movie; certainly they circled Madonna afterward and covered her with praise. Then it was off to the Thompson LES Hotel where M and her party were immediately put into a corner banquette. This tiny airless area became clogged with friends, would-be friends, fans and your standard looky-loos. It seemed claustrophobic to the max, but Madonna was as relaxed as a milkmaid in an open field. This has been her life for a quarter century. She probably doesn’t even notice the crush. (Though she’d sure as hell notice if it vanished!)

Everybody who had the nerve got a look at Madonna or threw her a word or two, over the heads of her security. But Lindsay Lohan had the jitters. Twice she said, “I’m going over,” and then changed her mind. “I can’t, I can’t … it’s too much.” In the end, they “chatted briefly.” ( Listen,  Elizabeth Taylor finally admitted a few years ago she was too awed by Barbra Streisand to ever speak to her! Stars – in so many little ways, just like us.)

Film fans, memorabilia mavens and admirers of the late great Bob Hope will adore the auction of property from Hope’s life and career, on October 18 and 19, put together by his daughter, Linda. This happens at the Beverly Hilton, benefiting U.S. veterans through the Bob and Dolores Hope Foundation. (Dolores was Bob’s divine wife of many, many years.)

And what property it is! There’s great stuff from Bob’s golf collection, including a Tiffany sterling silver golf club given to the actor on his 95th birthday by NBC. There are rare photos, furniture, suits, ties, T-shirts, boxing gloves and hockey sticks autographed by great sports stars, presidential-seal cufflinks from Richard Nixon, a rattlesnake-encased pen holder, smoking jackets, hats of every style (including a sombrero), exotic souvenirs from his world travels, his makeup case. The beautifully photographed catalog alone is priceless and a genuine collector’s item. For info on the event contact Darren@juliensauctions.com.

Mmmm…nope, Madonna, sorry. We aren’t saying that, becuase you’re successful in music, you shouldn’t act. You’re just not that good of an actress. Sorry to hear she’s getting divorced, but not surprised.

Dahlings, Madonna’s looking a bit…Faye Dunaway-ish lately, hasn’t she. I’m speaking of the face, dears - NOT acting talent. Faye is a fabulous actress, my dahlings, and Madonna is … well, she’s certainly THIN. Ahahahaha.

I am saddened by the news of Madge & Guy’s split. I have the utmost respect for both of them. But once again, its the offspring who suffer. They have so optimistically assembled a multi-dimensional family unit and give them some sense of security and stability. On the business side she is still the one to beat though. THE most successful female recording artist of all time.

I guess Madonna saw the photo of A. Rod and a pretty young women in the newspaper and thought to herself, I better hurry up and get a divorce. If she is thinking of A. Rod, she’s wasting her time. Besides Madonna is starting to look like a skinny old grandma. She should have tired to save her marriage, getting another young guy isn’t going to easy, unless she pays him.

Even though I don’t care to watch her, I think her music is actually quite good. She must be good to have sold as many albums as she has. She might be a bit outlandish but sometimes that is necessary to get ahead in a career. What more can be said about Bob Hope! He went through life caring for people. His Holiday specials were superb and his USO work with the troops to boost their moral was truly a display of love for his fellow man. May this legandary man live long in the history of America.

OOOOh: Who cares and what the hell am I doing responding to an article about Madonna. She was always a tramp and still is. Ugh!

This is a woman who requires ATTENTION BE PAID. I suspect her current husband knows a little too much about her and is unwilling to be a lap dog. Whazhisname, the baseball player, all brawn and no brain…typical of Madonna’s old M.O. with men. Besides, she is getting older. Heck if I had the money and the time, I could look like that too. But as the old saying goes, you have to give up your tight butt to keep your face…Madonna has kept her butt and bought a new face…and apparently a new man!

The movie looks as though it cost $500 to make and Madonna cannot act. She can self invent and do satire and sing [somewhat], but her iconic days are over. She is a black roots, anorexic, overmuscled middle aged woman trying desperately to be hip and “with” it. She is a pathetic reminder of our cultural desert and the enslavement of women’s images that are entangled in a crazed youth culture. She is not maturing gracefully or beautifully. She’s rich enough and old enough to have learned some dignity and objectivity as to how she really looks. Actually Madonna looks cheap.

Madonna can act (A lEague of Their Own, Evita, Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy, Girl 6, etc.) and sing. She is very talented. She can craft the best pop songs ever. Noone else has a much stronger stage presence. Directing a film and penning a children’s book do not seem preposterous at all for her to do. Long live the Queen!

In spite of all of her money, Madonna always looks cheap, there is always something slightly ‘off’ about her. If you want good songs you don’t have to waste money on hers, there’s Nickelback, Matchbox 20 and My Chemical Romance for starters. I once remember a review of her back in the mid 80s when she was described as singing like Minnie Mouse on helium. I agreed then and have never changed my opinion and I am not some impressionable, young kid, I turned 50 this July about a month ahead of her. I also don’t deny having had ‘a little work done’ as she does. She is a classic example of fooling some of the people all of the time crossed with publicity and promotion. I also feel sorry for the children as they are doomed to spend their lives in the goldfish bowl of fame, because of who their mother is. That is truly a poisoned chalice and I hope they have happy lives in spite of it.

I know this sounds mean but it is just an observation… Madonna looks like a drag queen in that photo.

Sorry… I don’t care and if another celebrity story never appeared… would be thrilled. The few advantages of this lengthy election process and the economic meltdown is that the celebrity stories have been reduced and children are hearing “no” from their parents. Finally a reality check.

it’s disheartening to read or hear how close minded some people can be and so critical all at the same time… with such thoughts of people, which we will probably never meet in this life time…it’s no wonder the world is what it is!! She a fascinating women who rose to the top and became very successful…. bottom line!! She’s seems at the top of her game… people respond anyway, negative or not… and continue to buy her music—— mmmmm…you go MADONNA!!! I hope for some of us … we can find a way to look deep within ourselves and probably find a few skeletons that would relate to anyone we are criticize…kinda make you want to fix yourself. sending out love and hope!! L~
