Liz Smith Responds to Those Who Want to Tie Sarah Palin to the Stake, Setting Her Afire Before the Nov. 4 Election

© AP

Honeys … please! Give me a break. I had no intention of "lecturing" you on how to treat Sarah Palin . I just wanted us to calm down a bit about the incipient GOP vice president before our furor at this veep choice explodes in our faces. And backfires on us.

Let’s get things totally straight here. I wasn’t backtracking. I haven’t changed my mind; I could never vote for a ticket that had Sarah Palin on it. She is anti almost everything I believe in except “the zipper and the dial telephone,” as Tallulah once opined of Republican candidate Tom Dewey.

I would ride to hell in a handbasket for the talented Julia Reed and for my other wOw partners who are conservatives, worried about having to pay more taxes. For this they are willing to shut their eyes to the antideluvian (and I believe, immoral) beliefs of the Republican Party. I violently disagree with them. If they think I’m a little to the left of Trotsky, I think they are a little to the right of Franco, Mussolini and that German guy.

I honestly feel as if I will perish if I have to live through an administration in which she is there, stealing all the thunder from her own president.

But through the years I’ve managed to be friends with William F. Buckley Jr., Roy Cohn, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., Taki Theodoracopulos, Rudy Giuliani, Pat Buchanan and to have a civil dialogue with them. I suppose old-fashioned manners and differences of opinion die hard.

OK, sweetie pies, go crazy for all I care. March on the Palin headquarters with flaming torches. I don’t want her to win anymore than most of you seem to. I honestly feel as if I will perish if I have to live through an administration in which she is there, stealing all the thunder from her own president. And being written of as a glamorous maverick for four years. (No matter how the media may hate her, they will eat her up and lick their chops if she continues as a public figure.) Or if I have to live through seeing the Supreme Court add just one more conservative Justice which will be the end of Western Civilization as we know it.

I was just saying that we might back off a bit from hysteria before we go to vote. Sometimes violent diatribes backfire and if the Democrats are as crazed by Sarah Palin as they seem to be, this may embolden Republicans and those who haven’t yet decided to go for her as a rebuke to overkill.

I would say if you want to read a reasoned response, again, you should go to Newsweek for September 15th and just take a look at Anna Qindlin’s reasoning under the headline “Can You Say ‘Sexist’?: If you’re a Republican, you’d better learn. The right wing that trashed the women’s movement suddenly finds its inner feminist.”

I used to like John McCain. But he lost me when that woman in his audience asked: “How do we beat the bitch?” (referring to Hillary Clinton) and he responded of his friend and colleague in the Senate: “Excellent question.”

So, OK, I thought Sarah Palin was an appalling choice. I was just overtaken by my Miss Manners training when I suggested we might damp it down a bit. We have 60 days to work to change things. My only wish is that Barack Obama had chosen Hillary Clinton as his vice-presidential choice. When Hillary debated Sarah, nobody could accuse either one of them of being unfair or sexist.

But if wishes were horses we all could ride. Now I am just going to cool my jets, unbuckle my saddle and take off my spurs. Somebody spurt some cool water on my head.

please, don’t bother burning her—-just find a musher, with a spare team, so she may run The Iditarod—-she may leave her ‘haven’ fully armed—-let’s just let her see the real Alaska—-and who crushes who—-

Yes me too I wish Obama would of picked Hillary also .And I wonder why he didnt choose her .I think he would of felt 2nd to Hillary because of Bill would of always been there …And I personally could never trust Bill not to cause a scandal .And I bet thats what Obama was thinking .I also wonder why he choose Biden and not Dennis Kucinich ? He may be a small man in size But he has the courage of Samson ! More courage than all the others matter of fact .He keeps pushing for Impeachment and I keep signing all the petitions ! They impeached Bill for far less ..And what Bush has done makes Bill’s past problems look like childs play .Something is so wrong in this country .I seen how Nazi run this country has become when Dennis Kucinich was banned from the Debates in Nevada it’s all over youtube .Its a shame of what this country has become and I wish and pray that I could win the lottery .I would move to France or Spain or in-between the 2 .I could get health Care and not live in Fear of dying or going to jail because of the new laws .I watch FSTV and seen people they put in jail for talking …just talking about the Gov.One man was 70+ and was in prison for 8 long years of his life…. just recently …for talking and nothing more .I want to run away from America and I will if Obama…doesnt win ..some— day !!I will ! We need a Big Monster change in America ! And Sarah Palin is not the ticket ! Or Mccain ..they are just Bush’s puppets ….and nothing more .

Last night on Letterman, Obama said he chose Joe Biden and his response was “You know, the way I thought about it was, ‘Who’s going to help me govern? Who’s the person I want in the room if we’ve got a big decision to make? Who’s going to be able to give me good counsel, good advice, who’s able to maybe have some ideas that I don’t have or give me a perspective that I haven’t seen, and I think that nobody can do that better than Joe Biden. And I know what he cares about and what he stands for - I think he’s going to be a great choice.” And I believe him. But the important question we need to ask is, why didn’t McCain, who is much less likely to finish his term consideriing his age and health concerns, put as much thought into his choice?

De, I think McCain wants to win so badly he set aside his moral obligations. He doesn’t have the Welfare of his Country at heart anymore. He just wants to be President no matter the cost to the Country. He’s gone from being a Hero to an Old man who makes terrible choices. He’s George Bush…………..just Older. I’m sure he is more intelligent than Bush (god anyone is smarter than Bush) But he’s not using his intelligence at this time. He’s become an avid Liar………..Did you see him on the View? He kept lying…………..

Yea, stupid: BO picked biden cause he himself doesn’t have a clue on how to run anything, except perhaps to be a “community organizer” McCain did put alot of thought into his pick as well. Do the words Mayor and Gov. ring a bell? You people are all so worried about her opinions, but you’re not so worried about BO’s friends, ie Ayers (terrorist bomber) from the 70’s or I guess that doesnt matter so much to you. Or the fact that he sat in a church (I use that term loosly) for 20 years listening to a psychotic, racist so-called pastor ranting every week. BO is an arrogant, self centered SOB who looks down on all of you and you’re too dense to see it. Bo is an arrogant, self rightous

Normally I don’t respond to people who resort to name calling except to take them to task for it. But a 15 minute phone call and a 2 hr meeting the day before the pick is NOT “a lot of thought”. “I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…. If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic, different’. Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers=the quintessential American story. If your name is Barack, you are a radical, unpatriotic Muslim. Name your kids Willow,Trig, and Track and you’re a Maverick. Graduate from Harvard Law School, and you are unstable. Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, and you’re well grounded. If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law Professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health & Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs Committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience. If your total resume is: local weather girl(sports caster), 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with fewer than 7000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, then you are qualified to becme the country’s second highest ranking executive. If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years and raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian. If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the following month, you’re a Christian. If you teach responsible age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fabric of society. If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you are very responsible. If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family values don’t represent America’s. If your husband nicknamed First Dude, with at least one DUI conviction and no college education, who did not register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

Obama didn’t choose Hillary because he’s arrogrant! He wanted to punish her for showing the world he wasn’t her equal. I can’t stand the sob, and I’m a black woman! He has some of us manless women salivating and voting with our libido. This guy doesn’t have the experience and his change is to surround himself with Clinton’s old administration. Too bad America has lost its grace…its moral compass has succumb to pop art and pop stars. Our children as well as their parents are mannerless people with more attitude than critical thoughts. Daughters much like their mothers self-esteem and decision-making is fueled by Lexapro, Xanax, abilify, and resperdal, instead of doing things to make us proud. I’m appalled at the way women are attacking Palin. I do not agree with her on many issues. I want gun control because I have felt the affects of guns near and far…I do not agree with abortions, but believe it is a discussion that should be left between a woman and her God. I’m enjoying this election year because so much flava (aka flavor) has been added to the field of candidates. I never thought in my lifetime that a black man would be so close to the white house or a woman for that matter. And I never thought I would choose a green party candidate. Political campaigns are always nasty…even JFK was nasty (..his daddy passed around dead presidents like m&ms to get him elected). JFK was self-centered as Obama. What I like about Palin although she’s on the wrong side of my politics, she dares the average girl to dream. An average young woman with an average American background can use Palin as a road map to getting involved in politics without an ivy league education and affluent friends. We need the common man and woman representation in congress, as mayors and governors, and presidents. Men have had 44 shots at the presidency and we know now that male gonads, ivy league education, years in congress or as governors has not made us a peaceful and equitable nation. Women are not obsessed with abortions, we need someone to have our back and give us the tools and resources for better child care, and eldercare because we’re sandwich between our children and parents who need us. Our husbands need us to bring in a second paycheck; some of us are head of household. We need to be safe from predators, put them away and throw away the key for some because rape, and murder are unacceptable! We will get closer to a more perfect union when more women participate in legislating at all levels of government. And to ensure balance we need critical thinkers who are willing to look beyond their conservative, liberal and independent philosophy, and allow others to pray to God or not pray to God but use common sense and wisdom to ensure a more perfect union.

Oh, Liz, you must be exhausted having to deal with all us feisty babes, but you do understand how vehement we are about this election––could almost use the word–panicky! You make a good point to cool it and let Palin drown in her own moose stew and let’s see what will ensue. I’ll try and keep my mouth shut; in the meantime I’ll keep my spite warm.

Nothing personal…there are so many letters like this. I am sick of it. I am going to pet my dog Jim and cut back on this site. Someone once said, “Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate.”
