Liz Smith: Rihanna – Dump Your Abuser, Now!
Also, Rush Limbaugh -- no joke; and Elizabeth Taylor at 77 – icon in furs. Here's the daily dish with wOw's Grande Dame

The last time I saw “Private Lives” on Broadway, with Liz ‘n’ Dick, this line still got a big laugh. I never liked it myself, and I wonder if in any future production of this play, that line itself would be struck.
The Master’s words are timeless gems of wit. But the ticktock of political correctness could squash this one.

Two big stories were on my mind over the weekend.
One was the swirling rumor of “reconciliation” between beaten singer Rihanna and her alleged abuser Chris Brown.
Girl, get it together! This man has to go to jail. You have to press charges. I don’t care if you’re only 21, so in love and he apologized. No man who hits a woman “even once” should get another chance. Think of your young fans and the message this sends.
Afraid you’ll never feel this way again? Please. Go talk to Halle Berry who is partially deaf in one ear from the abuse she took from an early relationship — she is now madly in love again and a new mom. Sit down with Tina Turner, beaten for years by Ike. She got away, made the comeback of the ages and has had a great man in her life for many years.
Rihanna, you have a real responsibility here that has nothing to do with your “feelings.” Be an adult. This is not a Noël Coward play.

The other story of note was the Rush Limbaugh jamboree at the CPAC conference. I channel surfed to Fox News, and there was Rush. Aside from anything he said, I was really turned off by his sloppy appearance. I didn’t need to see that much of Mr. Limbaugh’s neck in his open shirt. At least he wore black. On and on he went and I decided to get some fresh air on CNN. No escape!
There was Rush on CNN. They, too, were telecasting his entire speech, which lasted longer than the Civil War. It was, well — like when the president speaks. But he’s a radio talk-show host, yes? (MSNBC was lost in its idiotic weekend morass of specials about Death Row and other criminal matters.) CNN was leaning to the right and trying to catch Fox’s ratings.
Rush Limbaugh is not a marginal figure. He has millions upon millions of listeners/acolytes. He is the head of the conservative portion of America, if not quite of the Republican Party — there is a difference. Still, no Republican dares criticize him. The craven, frightened apologies he engenders are rather funny … in a Joe McCarthy/Huey Long kind of way.
Rush Limbaugh is no joke, and there’s no use trying to pretend he is just a buffoon or that the Republican Party will never rise again. If the stock market continues to plunge, we might see Rush on the political scene in ways too awful to imagine.

On to lighter fare. There’ll be big doin’s in Tribeca next Tuesday, March 10, when Tom Hanks presides over a special screening of his film “The Great Buck Howard” — he wears his actor and producer hats for this one. (It is a tale of a has-been “mentalist” looking to make a comeback.)
The Cinema Society is putting this together. Attending along with Hanks will be the movie’s stars: John Malkovich, Colin Hanks (Tom’s son) and the delectable Emily Blunt, who should have been Oscar-nominated for her turn in “The Devil Wears Prada.” I still feel bad that Emily and Michael Bublé split after several years dating. We dined together once and they were a great couple. She leveled him out. But a girl can only do so much.

Love your column today Liz………
Love Elizabeth Taylor……….she’s a couple of months older than I am.
Can’t stand Rush………..ukk ukk
I agree about the abuse story. Once they start hitting it never ends…..Young women get OUT.
I really enjoy having you here everyday……..You brighten my day.
I am with you Dona, I love Taylor, always have and I am 2 weeks younger than her. So we are in our 7 numbers. Congratulations to us.
Like you, I like the light "touch" of Liz’ column.
Thank you Liz. A nice article and a nice little tribute to Elizabeth Taylor on her 77th.
Your advice to Rihanna is most astute. Anyone could see from the photograph, that the guy did not hit her just once. She was beaten. Get out, girl. Get out now.
My Alias - I couldn’t have stated it any better. She’s on a path to self destruction.
The excuse making by the public for these idiots always takes me by surprise. What a disappointment all around. Robin Givens was burned at the stake for letting the world know that Mike Tyson raged at her and used her for a punching bag. Her career was effectively over after that revealing interview with Barbara Walters. Rihanna had a major opportunity to be a tremendous role model for young people everywhere - instead it seems as if she’s foolish enough to want more time with this violent oaf who brutalized her. Maybe she’ll see the light before she gets hurt again.
I don’t know about consensus. I think most folk are afraid to debate the issue at all. Unless you are anti-chris, you keep quiet. After having read previous articles where Rihanna openly talks about abusing her brothers during her many fights with them, I was convinced over a year ago that she was a violent person. It is odd to me that folk forget all of that and treat her as if she is this weakling who doesn’t strike first. I disagree with those who believe that women have the right to be emotional and lose control and men don’t—in this case a 19 year old boy. A teenage boy whom everyone is ready to throw under the bus and send to jail for many years. I am clear about the difference between agression/violent episodes and abuse…I am not convinced that this is a case of abuse yet… Could it be that Rihanna feels guilty about her actions and that is why she is 1)hiding out and 2) not throwing Chris under the bus yet????
As a womanist/feminist, I am uncomfortable with the notion of weakness and victim. Could be because I am a trained boxer and feel empowered to do real damage to those who seek to harm me. By the same token, I never initiate fights. An unpopular position I am sure, but it wouldn’t be the first time.
Never mind her career, her LIFE will be over!
I live in a condo where the walls are very thin. I have neighbors that constantly fight and the next day they are all "lovey dovey" again. It makes me want to vomit. This epidemic is EVERYWHERE and has been going on for centuries and I’m afraid it will remain in whatever time there is to come. Very sad and yet pathetic at the same time.
I think Rihanna threw the first punch. It is not excuse for what Chris did but would explain why he wasn’t arrested. Legally, it was self defense for Chris. They both need to learn anger management?
Rush is a slob. I cannot believe that the educated and rich in the republican party can tolerate Rush as a mouthpiece on their behalf. Quite a few donated to campaign Obama after Palin was nominated—out of concern for their own party. Mellon even endorsed Hillary. Why is Rush invited to all those events? A man who doesn’t take care of his own health is not a well-balanced person. Rush looks extremely unwell.
Liz is only 77? That’s young by today’s standards.
Re: Rihanna—a woman hits a man? The man leaves the room/situation. Period. You bet there is no excuse.
77 is young. And take it from an 86-year-old who thinks she is 28! But Elizabeth has suffered a series of ailments and accidents over the past 15 years that would have killed a lesser woman. She has an incredibly positive attitude, and keeps on keeping on, though her public profile is less than it once was.
Hi Liz,
Say, why isn’t there any buzz about the latest Celebrity Apprentice? Even the women at The View are ignoring it. Dennis Rodman, Andrew Dice Clay, Clint Black, Khloe Kardashian, Brian McKnight, Joan and Melissa Rivers and Jesse James, to name a few. When Andrew Dice Clay called Mr. Trump "Donny" I found it very entertaining…as well when Mr. Trump fired "Andy" at the end. This season has Dennis Rodman, Andrew Dice Clay, Clint Black, Khloe Kardashian, Brian McKnight, Joan and Melissa Rivers and Jesse James, to name a few, yet nobody’s talking about it.
Liz,
Re: Rihanna - a woman hits a man? Yeah, the man should leave the room, but we really don’t know how this happened. And we are all being so judgemental about what should have happened. Women should walk away too. It is not just the man’s responsibility to make sure the fight doesn’t start or escalate. I have known women who press the man into a fight and then someone gets a piece of their liver sliced and it wasn’t the woman.
Anyway, I think we should get out of Rihanna’s business.
