Liz Smith: They Said What? Politics and More From the Mouths of the Bold-Faced

Liz Smith

“American women such as Mrs. Palin exhilarate with their sense of limitless opportunity, their unquestioning can-do. This vim comes partly from their unbridled — not to say unwarranted — self-confidence,” writes Janice Turner in Britain’s Times

"Does anyone believe that woman who was mayor of a tiny Alaska town and then governor of that virtually empty state for 20 months is ready to step into the most powerful job on earth?” –another Times writer Alice Miles

“Alaska is our ‘redneck’ cousin, a frontier state full of drunks and crazy people … backwoods even by Canadian standards. In Palin’s whole life, she visited neighboring Canada precisely once and got a passport only last year. Does America really need another president who makes a virtue out of utter ignorance of the world?” –Heather Mallick, the Canadian writer for The Guardian

“I’ve never been asked or approached by anyone from the show about doing an episode of ‘ER.’" –George Clooney, in response to his returning for a guest appearance

“If you weren’t beautiful before surgery, you won’t be beautiful after it. Physical beauty is never enough in any case – you have to have something within, not just appearance, but character!”  –Carmen Dell’Orefice, the world’s 77-year-old still-working model

“Ever notice that ‘what the hell’ is always the right decision?” —Marilyn Monroe

“Erotica is using a feather, pornography is using the whole chicken,” –Isabel Allende, Chilean/American novelist

“I have a theory that life is junior high. Everybody’s trying to get to the right tables, hang out with the right crowd, say the right things and emerge saying they’re part of the ‘in’ group." –Tom Brokaw

“There’s something very corrupting about being an actor, it places a terrible premium on appearances.” —Paul Newman

“The Beatles are dying in the wrong order.” —British satirist Victor Lewis-Smith

“If I miss Mass, I feel guilty and I’ll usually find a church and light a candle. I missed Mass this past weekend because of all the traveling I’ve been doing. But there was a nun on the plane, so I felt better." –actor Mario Lopez

“The campaign will finally become what it has really been about all along: race. It will be about how many people are going to vote for the black guy on November 4. Palin can’t save McCain and neither can publicity stunts. Maybe race can still drag him across the finish line.” –columnist Mike Lupica

“The press is six-year-olds playing soccer; nobody has a position, it’s just: Where’s the ball? Where’s the ball? Sarah Palin has the ball! … You ‘good values people’ have had the country for eight years, and done an unbelievably shitty job too. Let’s find some bad-values people and give them a shot!” –Jon Stewart

“People ask me why Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and I aren’t starring in my new musical. I told them that it’s called ‘9 to 5,’ not 95!” –Dolly Parton

“Somebody seems to have switched the scripts. Conservative pundits who once disdained feminism are lauding Sarah Palin’s heroism in pursuing a demanding career while raising five kids. Liberal feminists, meanwhile, are suggesting that because of her unseemly ambition, Palin would be either an irresponsible absentee mom or a distracted vice president.” –editor of The Week, William Falk

“Western doctors were concerned about a growing demand for designer vaginas.” –Harper magazine’s "Findings" column

Thank you Amelie for expressing so perfectly why I take such offense at this woman’s assumption to speak for what she perceives is the “regular” guy and gal of America. Only her lack of experience with the rest of the world could lead her to believe that “Joe Six-Pack” and “Hockey Mom” describe a huge voting block of ordinary citizens who relish the thought of an undereducated, underexperienced, underexposed and over-confident woman. This is not the average in the rest of the U.S.(I mean, outside Alaska) and it is a great insult to both them and the rest of us when she talks down this way. Her sheer hubris is offensive and she reflects so poorly (but accurately) on John McCain that digging up skeletons in closets for political gain is not even necessary (and who isn’t sick to death of this totally dysfunctional style of politics - which merely masks a lack of thought, substance and agenda and makes one frightened to think of such a person in such a position). That she could so confidently and blatantly place herself above the debate process, ignoring the questions and the moderator, and boldly wink at the camera like some strumpet on parade (this isn’t a beauty pageant, for gods sake! and she is obviously flaunting her natural good looks in a sort of reverse sexism that is nasty and unfair) is so distasteful that only a sincere attempt on my part to be informed and a first-person witness kept me from turning the damn thing off. Imagine how well this will succeed in meetings of head of state, press conferences and state occasions. Frankly, she doesn’t even have the etiquette required for decent company, much less that of the Washington, DC crowd who, when all is said and done, has a cache and protocol for good reason, time-honored ones, and nothing is going to change that - not even a hard-charging, self-willed, ignorant, loud-mouthed, crass, overly ambitious woman. If she hopes to succeed in American politics, she has to go to school, as it were, and basic deportment might be one place to begin. But first she’d have to take on a dose of humility and see what is quite obvious to most others: she has a whole lot to learn about a whole lot of things!

Liz, You just quoted one of my idols…Carmen Dell’Orefice, one of the most beautiful models in history. God, she is stunning at 77, and has had the snow white hair ever since I can remember. And thank you for showing us her picture.

Thanks so much for the snippets from the British Times and Heather Mallicks contribution. I still haven’t gotten over the shock of Palin. The twang, the doncha and woncha, the gettin and meetin and all of those beautiful words that she uses to endear herself to the general public. I really cannot figure if those are real or she is using them deliberately. I have spent a few months (total) in Alaska. I cannot say if the people are crazy (most seemed very pleasant) but to the liquor problem I can attest. The ritual of the cocktail hour seemed to be unheard of—just belly up to the bar boys, take a fifth to the table and drink it. This may have been a Fairbanks thing but it seemed to spill over into Anchorage also. A zillion men, some with beards, some without, all in boots and flannel shirts, half drunk and very noisy. And where does this leave the women. Apparently wantin to be Mayor of the Town. I think Ms. Palin will be a very adequate Governor in Alaska, the population is small, the huntin is great. But before she plays with the big boys she is going to have to clean up her act, her speach, her good old girl looks and try to set a higher standard for the people who are listening to what she says. Can you imagine her in Shanghai? It is full of foreigners as is France and Germany and Italy——-more later, she really upsets me.

Liz, with your few exceptions here, even quotations ain’t what they used to be. Monroe gets more admirable with each passing day. “Our ignorance of history causes us to slander our own times.” - Gustave Flaubert. On that note, does anyone else see the fact that Obama has been radicalized as an asset? If fire must be fought with fire, (yawn) let McCain’s would-be arsonists defend his stated admiration for David Ifshin, ‘the traitorous’ Tokyo Rose of the Vietnam era. (Note: John wasn’t eight years old at the time.) Read: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marc-cooper/mccains-own-60s-radical-p_b_13… Back in the woods, they call this pine duff. And we’re not out of the woods, by a longshot.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea’s food watchdog has ordered China-manufactured snacks from Nestle SA and Mars Inc to be taken off shelves after detecting melamine in their samples, it said on Saturday. The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said 2.38 parts per million (ppm) and 1.78 ppm of the substance were found in M&M’s milk chocolate snack and Snickers peanut Fun Size, both produced by Mars and manufactured in China. “We are urgently recalling the products due to melamine detection,” KFDA said in a statement. Mars said it was temporarily withdrawing the products from the Korean market because it was legally obliged to do so and that the melamine levels announced by the KFDA did not pose a health risk. Kit Kat bars from Nestle were also found carrying 2.89 ppm of melamine, bringing the total number of melamine-detected items to 10 in Seoul. Nestle said the KFDA asked it to withdraw one batch of mini Kit Kat made in China from the market, after their tests detected minute traces of melamine in a single batch out of eight Nestle confectionery items tested. No melamine was detected in the other seven products, the company said. “The company immediately complied with the authorities’ request, even though this product is absolutely safe by recognized international standards,” Nestle said in a statement. “South Korea has no regulations on maximum levels of melamine in food, and the conditions under which the South Korean authorities conducted their tests are unclear,” it added. Melamine, widely used in kitchen utensils, can pose serious health risks if consumed in large quantities. At least four children in China died after drinking tainted infant milk formula last month. What Is National Health Insurance (NHI)? To begin with, it is NOT “Socialized Medicine”, far from it in fact. Also, it does not mean that our medical system will be taken over by the government and run like the post office as many of our opposition friends would mistakenly have you believe. Basically, House Resolution (H.R.) 676, the “New Expanded Medicare” bill now in sub-committee in the House of Representatives simply creates a new and far more functional “single payer” method of paying for medical services while leaving the medical system itself completely alone and intact. This will eliminate the hundreds of complicated and redundant payment plans currently imposed on the system by private “for profit” health insurance companies and save literally BILLIONS of dollars every year by eliminating such wasteful duplication. This will allow your doctors offices and hospitals to function much more efficiently and serve your needs much more effectively as well. Just imagine what a huge benefit this will be! Taxes: We all know that nothing of any real value is ever free, but if you think of the taxes that will be required to support national health insurance as simply a lower cost alternative to the staggering private health insurance premiums that most of us already have to pay but which will be totally eliminated under the new system, then it becomes immediately clear that this could be a really good deal after all! “Health care is a defining right in a democratic society.” Congressman Dennis Kucinich Check out some of the tremendous benefits that NHI will bring and see what you think: Every resident of the US will be covered from birth to death. No more pre-existing conditions to be excluded from coverage. No more expensive deductibles or co-pays. All prescription medications will be covered. All dental and eye care will be included. Mental health and substance abuse care will be fully covered.(1) Long term and nursing home services will be included. You will always choose your own doctors and hospitals. Costs of coverage will be assessed on a sliding scale basis. Tremendously simplified system of medical administration Total portability – your coverage not tied to any job or location. Existing Medicare benefits for those over 65 will remain the same or be vastly improved in many cases. (1)The United States has the unhappy distinction of having the largest inmate to total population ratio of any modern country in the world. It is estimated that a full 53% of that inmate population is being confined due to non-violent drug and addiction related issues. The combined costs to society of maintaining such a huge prison population is staggering in so many ways and accordingly, the cost savings to society of this one enormous benefit of national health insurance alone, that all drug and addiction treatment will be covered, is simply beyond calculation. “This is an issue that has no political boundaries, it has moral boundaries.” Elizabeth Edwards Congressional testimony May 8th, 2008 The real irony is that this new system will be a lot less expensive and provide much better services than the largely dysfunctional system currently in place and still leave us with the best health care system in the entire world, only with the New Medicare… it will be even better! Don’t be put off by all of the misleading and often inaccurate rhetoric that you so often hear about changing our system. For example uninformed critics will ask “Do you really want your medical decisions made by some government bureaucrat in Washington DC ?” Well, the truth is that with NHI, just about every medical decision will be made privately by you and your doctor. But ironically, under the current system, many medical decisions about what’s best for you are now being made by some corporate bureaucrat working for a private insurance company whose main concern is making larger profits by denying your claims. How exactly does that work out to be better for you?? “Of all forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Change is indeed often a very scary thing to most people, but when the need is so great and the proposed changes are so much better than the status quo, maybe changing to a NHI system in the USA is something that we can all think about supporting, whether you are a moderate, liberal or conservative, after giving it a lot of careful study and thought. Please call your congressperson and let them know what you think. They really need to hear from you on this issue. _____________________________________________________________________________ What is… The Citizens Alliance for National Health Insurance HR676.org,Inc. We are a not for profit group of concerned citizens working hard to spread the message about the tremendous health care benefits that all Americans will enjoy when we change to a NHI system. Here’s the point. If you go up to a hundred people on the street and ask them if they know what H.R.676 is all about, how many of them do you think will know the answer? You say none? Well that’s probably a pretty good guess. Simply stated, our goal is to change all that by means of an on-going national multi-media (mostly radio and TV) advertising campaign. In short, we intend to make H.R. 676 a household word in every state, county, parish and district in this great country of ours confident in the fact that once the American people become aware of this bill and the tremendous benefits that it offers, a groundswell of popular support will rise up to demand its passage. Because of the influence of the very wealthy and powerful private health insurance industry, our political representatives will NEVER pass true health insurance reform without overwhelming pressure from the American people to do so. Our purpose therefore is to help generate that pressure. The fact that most Americans are totally unaware of the existence of H.R. 676 underscores the tremendous need for a massive and ongoing nationwide multi-media advertising campaign to promote it more aggressively and encourage citizens to put pressure on their representatives in Congress to finally pass this bill. Our goal therefore, is to raise money to pay for that advertising, and other forms of various educational outreaches as well. Accordingly private donations are gratefully accepted. People often ask, “I am only one person, what can I possibly do to make a difference?” If you are one of those people, then here is your answer… Membership in HR676.org, Inc. is voluntarily assessed at $.99 cents per month per person and accepted in an annual donation of $10.98 (one month Free). Larger donations are, of course, gratefully accepted as well and will help to increase our momentum and effectiveness that much more, but all gifts of every size are deeply appreciated. Consider this: We do not compete with all of the other groups working forNational Health Insurance They all provide invaluable sources of information and support. We just want to focus on implementing a solid plan of action to actually help make it a reality by funding a powerful and ongoing national advertising campaign to spread the word from coast to coast about the tremendous benefits that this program will provide for the American people. But it all starts with you, so please join today! Please note: Companies that offer health insurance coverage as a benefit for their employees will themselves benefit greatly from the significantly lower costs of that same coverage under the New Medicare. Accordingly, commercial sponsorships of HR676.org, Inc. are greatly encouraged for the mutual benefit of all concerned. Please call 800-680-9310 for further information. If not us, who? If not now, when?

“Western doctors were concerned about a growing demand for designer vaginas.” What is a designer vagina? Thought I had heard it all, but shown once again not. Caught a bit of “The Girls Next Door” last night, and Holly got a mold of her privates, which was then used to pour liquid chocolate into,so she could have a chocolate vagina. Thought that was beyond the pale, but this story tops that easily.

“The Beatles are dying in the wrong order.” —British satirist Victor Lewis-Smith Not from this dead movie star’s perspective, dahling. I wouldn’t be caught DEAD drinking martinis with Ringo and Paul. And Liz, dahling, Marilyn sends her best, and asks you think of her the next time you have champagne and good Russian caviar. She’s been spending quite a bit of time with James Dean lately - but you didn’t hear it from me.

Sarah Palin is a nut case. She comes to us courtesy of John McCain. John McCain survived 5 years in a cage in Vietnam. I salute him. He is a survivor. He is not a hero. Being a survivor (or a hero, were he one) would not qualify him (or anyone else) to be president. Being kept in a cage for five years messes with your head. This was proven to us when he chose Sarah Palin for his running mate. This is a woman whose son is on his way to Iraq because it was that or jail. Her daughter is pregnant and miserable. (Take a look at the poor kid’s face) The boyfriend doesn’t want the baby. Her husband joined a weirdo group. And she has no foreign policy experience is that she can see Russia from her house. Well, I can see the moon. Does that make me a scientist? The woman is Nutsy the squirrel. I would love to see a woman become president, but the right woman. This one is no smarter than Paris Hilton. Years ago I worked for the UN in Rome. This was during the Nixon administration and I left the country because I was disgusted. I was young and single then. I could leave. Anyway, the day he resigned I picked up my paper on the way to work and when I saw the headline I got all excited. The newspaper seller told me, “The American people are babies. They expect politicians to be honest and good. They are no good. You are all stupid.” I wasn’t in the least bit offended. We are incredibly naive. I didn’t think that we were stupid. I do now. I am convinced that the majority of the people in this country are stupid after the events of the past eight years. If we elect John McCain and the frozen loonie we deserve what we get. Our children, however, do not.
