That Famous, Insignificant Pitcher of Spit!

Liz Smith

“It ain’t worth a pitcher of hot spit!”

This is how John Nance Garner described the office of the vice president of the United States. But these days it seems to mean more.

I feel the long primary process, running up to the Democratic and GOP conventions, has exhausted potential voters and many are disillusioned. There is definite “buyer’s remorse” over Barack Obama’s nomination and in New York he has dropped over ten points in his lead. John McCain was never a big favorite of the conservative GOP and as he swerved to the right, he erased his attractive maverick image and irritated middle-of-the-road and independent voters.

Both candidates are imperfect. So perhaps the choice of a running mate has never been so important, except for when JFK selected Lyndon Johnson. And while experts keep saying that polls indicate nobody pays attention to the vice-presidential candidate, in this case it matters. The office is a kind of antidote this year to general disillusion.

——————————

Even when Hillary Clinton isn’t listed anymore as a running mate, people invariably drift into speaking of her or writing her in on many polls. She made quite an impact and many believe Obama should be brave enough to risk alienating some of his supporters because she’d help him in the race.

And I don’t think all that talk about Bill being the 2,000-pound gorilla in the room makes sense. Senator Clinton knows how her husband’s intransigence hurt her campaign. If she became veep I believe he’d be completely sidelined. She has learned her lesson and now is more famous and important than he is.

In a CBS poll of Democratic delegates, taken after the John Edwards debacle, Hillary ended up at 28 percent, Joe Biden had only 6 percent and Evan Bayh, Bill Richardson and, get this, John Edwards, tied at 4 percent each. So like her or not, Hillary is still a player and at the moment may be the most dynamic woman in U.S. history.

——————————

Joe Biden of Delaware seems like Obama’s favorite. He is good-looking, smart, capable and knows international affairs. Of course, he talks too much but lately seems to have “caught on” to his faults. The problem is he is very much a Senate veteran, so forget the “change” idea. He also sucks all the air out of the room. (Shades of Bill Clinton.)

If Obama selects either Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas or Claire McCaskill of Missouri, I don’t think it will help him. Women would say, “Why not Hillary in that case?”

Bill Richardson is a good guy who’d appeal to Latinos but I think he’s made for a cabinet post. He is sincere but not an eloquent speaker. Evan Bayh and Chris Dodd. Come on – way too steadfast, old-fashioned, not meant for the “change” ticket. Virginia hasn’t voted for a Democrat in ages, so Governor Tim Kaine could double down on “change.” He has an important swing state and a chance.

Caroline Kennedy, who is on the selection committee? Well, it’s quite an idea. I don’t know what she’d deliver actually, but she is good-looking, smart, well-educated, rich, connected, very much her own person. No scandal has ever touched her, though people are not crazy about her husband.

She might be an appealing choice – female, impeccable, connected via Uncle “Teddy” and her legendary family name.

Well ladies, you got my curiosity going. I have heard this word, and occasionally used it, but I cannot remember the last time I saw it written. For that matter, I do not recall ever actually hearing a definition - so it was off to the dictionary… My trusty 2-inch thick Random House ‘pocket’ dictionary did not have it - though it did have; schlemiel: an awkward and unlucky person. schmo: a foolish, boring, or stupid person. schnook: an unimportant or stupid person. The online Webster dictionary only gave the Yiddish meaning, which I hadn’t known and does not apply to half the Dems in Connecticut. My good old (and I do mean old) Funk & Wagnall’s included the meaning we are thinking of; schmuck: a foolish or clumsy person. schmo: a naive, pitiable person. schnook: a person who is unimportant or easily deceived. Lord knows I’ve been all of the above at one time or another. 8-)

Great summary, Liz. DeBurca….I looked at the HuffPo headline but didn’t read the piece. Joe Lieberman is this year’s Zell Miller. Nuf said. Obama might surprise and chose HRC as JFK selected LBJ because it was politically expedient in order to win. He is doing a lot of things as JFK did. It never hurts for politicians to be attractive if it is the finishing touch on a package of competence and intelligence. Historians rate the #1 presidents as being intelligent and able to articulate a vision in a manner that gets people behind it i.e., JFK’s Moon speech at Rice University, his Berlin speech, and Inaugural….all classics. As was Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbechev! Tear down this wall!” Obama is a communicator among the best….although the consensus was he wasn’t in his element or on his game at Saddleback.

PS: Speaking of memorable words and phrases that become part of the popular vernacular, this is one of my favorite books, “Words That Shook The World: 100 Years of Unforgettable Speeches.” http://www.amazon.com/Words-That-Shook-World-Unforgettable/dp/0735202966 Beautifully designed as to photos, layout, paper and print quality, the author takes the particular speech and then alongside explains what was powerful etc. And there’s a CD of all the speeches included. The author is a czar on speaking and has advised CEOs, presidents, even Princess Diana. His choice of the #1 speech in the last 100 years was MLK, Jr’s “I Have A Dream” and I learned from the book the speech was extemporaneous. MLK had written another speech but tore up the notes. Anyway, tremendous book…also saw it at the library.

Winery lets hope Obama doesnt end up like JFK did if “He is doing a lot of things as JFK did”…I am not saying this to cause any grief but has anyone ever thought about what would happen to this Country if Obama was elected and then assignated by GOD forbid by a white man…I see Rodney King 100 billion gazillion times worse. I can honestly say that is another reason I will not vote Obama. I mean we already have one man sitting in jail for threatening Obama’s life and he isnt President. Does no one think about that consequence or are we all too scared to mention it. And this is NO WAY A THREAT AGAINST OBAMA, just a concern, a big concern…

Thanks Liz, for a good summing up. John Nance Garner was not so dainty as to talk about pitchers, and in fact he wasn’t even talking about spit. For what he really said, take a peek at his Wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Nance_Garner I can’t imagine Caroline Kennedy on the Veep ticket. She is undeniably bright but she is still a mom with kids at home. Maybe elective office is in her future, but probably not now. I hear that Al Gore is going to speak at the Convention. Maybe he will be the Veep? I know, been there, done that, has the t-shirt. Still, one can hope.

Elizabeth, Gore would be my absolute fav…but am not taking a trip to Fantasyland. Speaking of which. Doesn’t Obama-Biden sound like an exclusive island resort for the Lear-jet set?

I heard a blip on the news this afternoon that Joe Biden says he is not the VP candidate. Could be he is just running an end game around all the queries. I also heard that Senator Dianne Feinstein will not be attending the Convention. Does anyone know why?

Dianne Feinstein was hiking in Tahoe with her friend Ellen Tauscher and stepped wrong and broke her ankle. Evidently she broke it pretty badly because once she got to a doctor and got x-rayed the doctor told her she could not travel at all for a month. She was going to chair some big thing at the Convention, but that is out. I feel so sorry for DiFi, I think I will send her a note. I have broken my ankle twice and know how painful, exasperating and demoralizing it can be.

Elizabeth…..I can’t even imagine a broken ankle aft a shattered foot. Would never have known how awful and debilitating and demoralizing it is if hadn’t happened to me, so I feel for her, and anyone who has mobility problems. Am so grateful to be moving again and taught me that if see someone who has a problem jump in and ask in a cheerful way that protects their dignity if can help carry their groceries or whatever. It’s easy to write, ‘broken ankle’ infinitely harder to heal and live with…and impacts entire system, habits, limiting etc. Even with her $$ so will have the best of everything, no one but can walk to the bathroom for her at 4AM.

I am glad you are recovering Suzanne. I remember when wOw first got started and you were marooned with that broken bone. When I broke my ankle the second time I was amazed at how many little things I could no longer do. I had to hire help to clean and even buy groceries for me. [Imagine someone on crutches with a grocery cart.] My guess is that Senator Feinstein’s break was especially nasty or she would be a little bit more mobile. And the timing is especially demoralizing, just before the convention and when there is talk of her starting a run for the Governor’s job. [Though with a majority in the Senate next year —I hope—, it would be wrong for her to leave when she can finally do things.]

Elizabeth….If I may ask, how did you re-break your ankle? My foot is healed but it took so long and like you said amazingly disruptive and depressing. I was going to sports medicine/ortho and they said vulnerable to re-break for a year….ugh.
