Liz Smith: Will Washington Ruin Barack and Michelle? And Flying High (or Not!) With A-Rod and Madonna

“As the new first family gets ready to move into the White House, comparisons to the Kennedys swirl. But all I have to say is: Who cares what she wears and how she decorates?” opines Louise J. Esterhazy, in the January issue of W.

Louise continues: “The stupid ones who compare Michelle O to Jackie O miss the point. Camelot is so far in the past it is another history. And even the Kennedy Camelot wasn’t a paradise, as we’ve come to learn. The Obamas have their own agenda, and the only real question is whether the Washington swamp will suck them in and ruin things.”

I don’t think the swamp of DC will ruin the Obamas. They are going to have to struggle to survive the virulent right wing which cannot — will not! — accept his presidency, or Michelle’s First Lady status. Obama will also have to survive and cope with the virulent left wing; they are busy complaining that their candidate hasn’t stocked his coming Cabinet with radicals and progressives.

I’m afraid Barack Obama — because so much is expected of him — will never be able to fall back on the classic final line in “Some Like It Hot” — said Joe E. Brown: “Nobody’s perfect.”

And the downright loony scandal of lame-brained Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich — trying to barter off Barack’s Senate seat — has cast an irritable, unfortunate shadow, even before Barack is inaugurated. (No wonder Barack didn’t wait to run for president — he clearly wanted out of Chicago politics!)

But from what I’ve read so far, the investigators don’t seem to have much of a case against Blagojevich. The governor says a lot of crazy stuff, but idiocy caught on tape and saying you  intend to do something or want something done — like firing reporters; I don’t know if that’s a crime. Seems more like reality-challenged braggadocio. Whatever happens, it’s going to make a great Vanity Fair story.

P.S. Obama is going to have to learn to respond with more immediacy and authority even to a small-ish crisis like this. His trademark hesitancy and careful parsing was not helpful as this story broke. Even a sense of humor would help. I mean, how crazy is Blagojevich?

——————————-

For news junkies, the best TV watching right now is CNN’s Campbell Brown, who has turned all gutsy and opinionated. She has her own hour, “No Bull, No Bias,” and when she really gets the bit in her teeth, there is hair-tossing, nostril-flaring, snarling and dramatic pronouncements not enjoyed since the salad days of Susan Hayward.

Campbell’s a riot, and entitled to her drama, but I am so weary of TV pundits and so-called journalists who insist on having “personality.” I say, just give me the news. I’ll make up my own mind.

And yes, in case you haven’t noticed, CNN is moving more toward the right.

FOX News is, as always, uber-conservative. (Which is fine, just admit it.)

MSNBC has two steely-eyed confirmed right-wingers still on board — Joe Scarborough and his dizzy blonde sidekick Mika Brzezinski, aka “Mommy.” (Well, she is dizzy in Joe’s presence. When he goes away and she takes over the show for herself, she is not terrible.)

But Joe and Mika are on in the morning. MSNBC’s evening lineup is dominated by the liberal sarcasm of Keith Olbermann and his acolyte, the adored-for-now Rachel Maddow.

As for Chris Matthews, another MSNBC staple, I never know quite what he is, other than always very excited, and always most excited when discussing Hillary Clinton. (I feel certain Chris would have had to take a “vacation” if Hillary won the primary and the presidential election. He would have come back, but as a mere shell of himself.)

If you want world news without ego or showmanship, check out the BBC. It is a blessed relief.

Why are you leaving out PBS’s News Hour? Certainly for a sane and balanced assessment of issues this program takes the cake or at least a goodly portion of the frosting. I find Rachel Maddow marvelous in her format, concise in her reporting and fair, albeit left leaning, but fair none the less. Keith is a one man show that relates to Maddow’s in a brother-sister kind of camaraderie. His nemesis Bully Bill O’Reilly gets trampled almost nightly which I find very funny.

P.S. Your remark about Obama not having a sense of humor about the Chicago debacle, you evidently missed the press conference where he was laughing at what the Governor called him, but said he couldn’t repeat it since “this is a family show, after all.”

I agree with you Phyllis, Obama had a glint in his eyes that said he was LOL inside at the whole mess. I love MSNBC for my evening news and CNN for afternoon. PBS and BBC sometimes. Watching these guys go at it makes me forget whatever is bothering me that day. For that, I’m greatfull. I for one appreciate Obama taking his time coming out the box. We’ve had more years than we can count of people jumping out there shooting off at the mouth and stepping all over their message trying to please everybody.

Cheryl: Your last sentence describes methods that have gotten politicians into deep do-do. Obama is deliberate. He THINKS. He is not a sound biter, a shoot from the hip kind of guy. In this fast-paced world, he seems to be the still point––the steady compass that will help lead us in the right direction. If that sounds overly optimistic, it is.

I enjoy you so much, but I have to disagree with you about Campbell Brown. She is shrill and snippy. She really irritates me. She reminds me of a fox terrier —(now don’t attack me fox terrier fans). — the negative traits like incessant barking. I prefer journalists like Tom Brokaw and the late Tim Russert — and even Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow. Something about Campbell’s voice and demeanor just gets under my skin. I’d be happy to see both her and Keith Olbermann go.

I am so with you Liz on the news media. I prefer to get my news online so I don’t have to watch the “performances” and listen to the vocal inflections of the talking heads. Well, that is unless it’s John Stewart’s or Stephen Colbert’s performance and inflections, LOL. If for some reason I have to listen to a news program I prefer Katy Couric on CBS. She at least seems to see things more from my point of view. I’m very afraid the Washington will, if not ruin the Obama’s, at least make them a lot less happy. I can’t imagine having to live the way presidents and first ladies do.

I view the Obamas as very levelheaded and direct in what they say and do. His pauses allow for thoughtful statements to emerge, and that’s something we have not had since the first Bush presidency. I fdon’t feel conned when he speaks and I don’t see Michelle standing by with a painted on smile that has no warmth. Washington may seek to devour them, but their faith in God and country, and their love for each other and family will be their mainstay.

Liz, you chose one of my favorite photos of Michele and Barack…look at the love in his eyes. What woman wouldn’t want her guy to hold her and look at her that way? I think he’ll be just fine. The pressures and headaches that come with the position of President won’t faze him. He has proven he has a laid back, cautious personality, and I think that will serve him well. At least we know we shouldn’t expect any knee-jerk reactions that lead us into another war. However I agree with you about his need to change the way he responds to issues. This is the only area where his cautious mentality doesn’t serve him well. It always comes across as if he is hiding something, when I’m sure he isn’t. He needs to be more direct, bold and expressive in these situations.

Liz, This is a good article - but I don’t agree with you that Obama needs to respond quickly - Obama knows that if the shoots from the hip anything he says can will be used against him. So he tries to get it right the first time. As far as the Gov. Blagojevich affair- because of the legal issues- sometimes it is best to make a statement once you know the facts. Fitzgerald might have requested that the Obama camp remain silent. I think he is wise to avoid the press and then when he is ready make a statement so that the water doesn’t get even more muddled.
