With her divorce from Guy Ritchie behind her, Madonna has now set her sights on playing one of the most scandalous divorcées ever: Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom King Edward VII gave up the British throne.

According to reports in the Guardian of London, the movie is a "labor of love" for the 50-year-old pop star, who identifies with the trials of the twice-divorced American socialite who pushed her way into British society. Coincidentally, Madonna has also been divorced twice.

Simpson created one of the biggest royal scandals of the 20th century when Edward abdicated in 1936 after just one year as king to marry "the woman I love." The fact that the pair came to support Hitler was, well, unfortunate, though surely would make for an interesting movie.

"Madonna said she is fascinated about this American commoner who refused to conform or offer explanations for her love life," the Guardian’s source added. While her divorce from Ritchie put the project on hold, "when things settle down this year," the source says, "she’s keen to get things going again." No other details of the film have been announced.
