Is the Music Over for Madonna and Her Guy?

Liz Smith

“You push me when I don’t appreciate/you push me not to lie and not to hate/you push me when I want it all to end/you push me when I really need a friend.”

These are the lyrics to Madonna’s song, “Push,” from her 2006 “Confessions on a Dancefloor” album. It was a tribute to her husband, Guy Ritchie. That music may be ending now.

——————————

Well, it certainly took Cynthia Rodriguez — now busy maxing out her hubby’s credit cards — a long time to admit that she doesn’t believe Madonna and Alex had a sexual affair, but “an affair of the heart.” There is a significant difference, folks. It can be seen as betrayal, yes, but if it doesn’t go that extra step, then both parties have put on the brakes.

Here’s the deal: Alex has been in an unhappy marriage for some time. (Ever see Cynthia and Alex interact? Not a cheerful duo.) He has behaved, according to rumors and strippers, without much discretion or concern. At age 32, he’s no kid. It is likely he began to wonder if there was a way to alter his behavior and his life.

Enter Madonna. Even before kabbalah, the pop icon was a finger-wagging “do as I say … I know best” kind of woman. (I always said if she hadn’t gone into show biz, she’d have ended up as Miss Ciccone, the very strict English teacher.) Once immersed in the mysticism of kabbalah, which promises less “chaos” and a freedom from ego, Madonna became quite the proselytizer. (She has said, repeatedly, that freeing herself from her ego has been a massive, often failed struggle. But she keeps on trying.)

So she met Alex. They talked. Perhaps he unburdened himself on the state of his marriage. Madonna listened, brought out the big guns of kabbalah and told him it could help change his life. I don’t doubt there was a personal attraction on both sides. He is very much her “type,” or certainly was back in the day — before Guy Ritchie. And despite the ghastly paparazzi pics of late — and Madonna’s incredibly bad sense of style featuring lacy knickers and high heels — she remains, in person, appealing and beautiful. So there was probably plenty of sexual tension. But that doesn’t mean consummation. As the old vaudeville line goes, “Vaz you dere, Charlie?” I wasn’t, so I’m sure not betting the rent one way or another. But I honestly do not believe Madonna would carry on an affair in front of her three children, in her own home.

Just like millions of “regular” folks, they found out that perhaps they’d misunderstood the ground rules. Or didn’t realize any were needed.

——————————

As for Guy Ritchie, he came to New York and has suffered agonies few men could endure. The headlines have been battering. I think the marriage is hanging by a thread, but neither wants to give up just yet. They entered into their wedlock with high hopes and expectations. And just like millions of “regular” folks, they found out that perhaps they’d misunderstood the ground rules. Or didn’t realize any were needed.

The rumor mill insists they will split in November after Madonna’s tour ends. Huh? Like people won’t go see Madonna if she’s separated from Guy? It’s not like he’s part of the act. If she wanted it over, he’d be gone. Still and all, she wrote that song, quote above, two years ago, and someplace it continues to resonate: “Every race I win/every mood I’m in/Everything I do, I owe it all to you.”

Kitty—I frankly just don’t give a damn about her divorce—waste of my time—think I’ll go back to listening to The Last Waltz and The Band—more important to me.

Madonna could have just been his friend—he was facing divorce after all. As far as her marriage, well, her track record is not so great, but many celebrity couples know how to survive. They stay out of the press. Take Newman and Woodward; I envy them.

Never really liked Madonna. So, as Blanche Deveraux once said: “That´s a big Who-cares-story!”

I know who Madonna is, but A-Rod? He’s a complete mystery to me. As my teen-aged nephew says, “Don’t know, don’t care.” I don’t pay attention to celeb gossip. I have a life of my own, thanks.

A-Rod is a baseball player with the New York Yankees and is being divorced by his wife.

I’m unclear as to the intent of the comments in this section. Liz Smith is a celebrity journalist. Are you saying that you don’t want any articles posted by her, or that you want the articles to be about someone else? This is, after all, a site for women over 40, and Madonna qualifies in that respect.

Not at all Kitty. We love Liz. The comments are in response to the title since the title is in the form of a question.

Hi Carol, I believe the title is in the form of a rhetorical question. Seen from the eyes of the author, the responses may seem quite rude, to say nothing of the fact that those who may be interested might hesitate to comment with so many disparaging comments preceding them.

Kitty, The reaction may also be to A-Rod who always had a bad-boy image. As for Madonna, I am curious who she will hook-up with next. This was the longest relationship she was ever in. Sting’s wife introduced them. If Liz finds that information out, it will be a big scoop. Here in NYC, we see reports of her and her husband meeting with their Kabala advisor who is also meeting with A-Rod. If Kabala can bring the Yankees to another series win, I’m all for it. Liz is a very popular columnist here in NYC and she used to be part of the local NBC news team. She handled Sinatra’s rudeness towards her, which I believe ended well. She’s a tough NY/Texas cookie. If I learned one thing about WoW, people do not hesitate to comment. They just may not be interested in the topic and moved to other threads. Liz got a lot of hits with her book recommendation.

Ask someone who cares…never did care much for Madonna except when she made the movie version of ‘Evita,’ and that was only because I liked the original sound score. I won’t cry for you Madonna.

Madonna WHO? The only thing I think when I see her name is god, I can’t stand her. I did like the photo with her son that was recently featured on WoW. However, the loving mother shot was not enough to convince me that she is a goodhearted person. oooppss, oh, well!

I like gossip about the rich and famous. I don’t like Madonna but she is part of the pop culture. Thanks Liz for keeping me entertained.

I have no respect for A-Rod, who has the highest salary in sports. He’s a phenomenal offensive player, but egotistical and immature beyond belief. He could take a cue/clue from the Yankee infeilder who plays to his immediate left, shortstop Derek Jeter, the Kalamazoo Kid. Jeter comports himself with class and professionalism, whereas Rodriguez’s off-field life has been a media circus. Now, it sounds like he’s turned his back on his wife to run with Madonna.

James you forgot to mention the best part about Jeter. He’s very cute. I don’t give a fig about sports.
