Is the Music Over for Madonna and Her Guy?

Liz Smith

“You push me when I don’t appreciate/you push me not to lie and not to hate/you push me when I want it all to end/you push me when I really need a friend.”

These are the lyrics to Madonna’s song, “Push,” from her 2006 “Confessions on a Dancefloor” album. It was a tribute to her husband, Guy Ritchie. That music may be ending now.

——————————

Well, it certainly took Cynthia Rodriguez — now busy maxing out her hubby’s credit cards — a long time to admit that she doesn’t believe Madonna and Alex had a sexual affair, but “an affair of the heart.” There is a significant difference, folks. It can be seen as betrayal, yes, but if it doesn’t go that extra step, then both parties have put on the brakes.

Here’s the deal: Alex has been in an unhappy marriage for some time. (Ever see Cynthia and Alex interact? Not a cheerful duo.) He has behaved, according to rumors and strippers, without much discretion or concern. At age 32, he’s no kid. It is likely he began to wonder if there was a way to alter his behavior and his life.

Enter Madonna. Even before kabbalah, the pop icon was a finger-wagging “do as I say … I know best” kind of woman. (I always said if she hadn’t gone into show biz, she’d have ended up as Miss Ciccone, the very strict English teacher.) Once immersed in the mysticism of kabbalah, which promises less “chaos” and a freedom from ego, Madonna became quite the proselytizer. (She has said, repeatedly, that freeing herself from her ego has been a massive, often failed struggle. But she keeps on trying.)

So she met Alex. They talked. Perhaps he unburdened himself on the state of his marriage. Madonna listened, brought out the big guns of kabbalah and told him it could help change his life. I don’t doubt there was a personal attraction on both sides. He is very much her “type,” or certainly was back in the day — before Guy Ritchie. And despite the ghastly paparazzi pics of late — and Madonna’s incredibly bad sense of style featuring lacy knickers and high heels — she remains, in person, appealing and beautiful. So there was probably plenty of sexual tension. But that doesn’t mean consummation. As the old vaudeville line goes, “Vaz you dere, Charlie?” I wasn’t, so I’m sure not betting the rent one way or another. But I honestly do not believe Madonna would carry on an affair in front of her three children, in her own home.

Just like millions of “regular” folks, they found out that perhaps they’d misunderstood the ground rules. Or didn’t realize any were needed.

——————————

As for Guy Ritchie, he came to New York and has suffered agonies few men could endure. The headlines have been battering. I think the marriage is hanging by a thread, but neither wants to give up just yet. They entered into their wedlock with high hopes and expectations. And just like millions of “regular” folks, they found out that perhaps they’d misunderstood the ground rules. Or didn’t realize any were needed.

The rumor mill insists they will split in November after Madonna’s tour ends. Huh? Like people won’t go see Madonna if she’s separated from Guy? It’s not like he’s part of the act. If she wanted it over, he’d be gone. Still and all, she wrote that song, quote above, two years ago, and someplace it continues to resonate: “Every race I win/every mood I’m in/Everything I do, I owe it all to you.”

Elaine, thank you for your well-reasoned reply. Since my name was in your post, I did think you were addressing me. But you’ve acknowledged that you see how I might think that. We have come to a mutual understanding, and this issue is resolved. I accept your peace and grace….none can ever have too much. Peace and grace, Elaine

Elaine….”Live and let Live” is my motto each day when I post here. When someone corrects me or “comes at me” —I sorta let the words just flow over my head. There are times it can be very tough. However, just remember, for every bad experience you might have on here there are many good debates. I agree with you on the name calling — not too crazy about that aspect. Just remember there is always someone who will have your back - don’t leave - just hang in there. Everyone has a right to their opinion. Happy posting.

I would like to add a name to list of women who can really sing. Etta James made me tingle all over when I first heard her voice. I love to hear her and the other before mentioned ladies sing the blues.

Gee, I just read all the posts re Liz reporting on Madonna and was interested, not in Madonna, for whom Liz has been supportive in the past and feel that Liz is just the greatest reporter ever, ever, in her field. I cannot start my day without her comments in the ny post and wow. She is more than kind to many celebreties but I often wonder what she thinks in her deep in the heart of Texas heart? More Liz, all the time, on any subject!!!

Why does the mainstream media think anyone cares about the divorce woes of the rich and famous????? Please. Report significant news and leave the trash reporting to Entertainment Tonight. That way, it doesn’t invade my quest for the significant news of the world. When my local news station saw fit to add a comment on Britney Spears all those months ago, they got a barrage of complaints about the inappropriateness of such reporting. Never heard another word on the subject. Now, if only we could get the major news programs to refrain from reporting such junk news. It undermines their reporting of serious news.

I am sick of hearing about Madonna and Guy, Brad and Angelina, and dozens of others celebrities who put their private lives out there in the public domain. Married men: keep your zippers up; married women: keep your knickers on! And while I am on a role: couples having babies? At the very least, get married BEFORE you give birth. Set an example for all the young men and women who come and see your movies!

I’ve always wondered why people take that woman seriously enough as an “artist” to write so in-depth about her. All that does is add to her publicity, thereby inflating her ego further…which means I get to see and hear Madonna every place I go until the day I die. And, frankly, let’s hope that is somewhat soon, in this case. The real question is - who else here would pay big $$$ to watch Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Ann Wilson, Patti Smith, and other such glorious women in music (who have managed to write their own material while being both ORIGINAL and INTELLECTUAL)…kick Madge’s pretentious @$$ right back into Reality (even without any physical contact, that is)? I suppose I shouldn’t be perpetuating negativity by ranting about Madonna - something I do quite often lately; normally I am neutral and/or forgiving when it comes to celebrities. But everyone has that one exception, that one button that occasionally gets pressed, that weakness, that guilty pleasure…right?
