Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Ha! You and I think alike, on all of the above! I am totally AMAZED that EVEN under a magnifying glass, these people cannot see themselves for what they really are doing—-or maybe they do, but know that they have permission —-who is forcing them to be held accountable? NO ONE! Do you think that those they are talking to have been beaten up so many times, and so badly, that we have lost our voice? After all, with all the ‘shennanigans’ of fraud, corruption, deceit, downright lying——it seems as though these folks believe they have been given permission to be unethical….. it sucks….

LOL. After Ann Coulter, could Margo be far behind? Welcome to the lineup, Margo. Up to this week, things were getting a little slow.

Hi….In some circles, apparently, “self-knowledge is almost always bad news…”

When you are on a mission from God, anything goes. At least for extreme religious conservatives. Republicans. Taliban. The Usual Suspects. I was listening to some Republicans talking on the radio today, discussing how to rebuild the party. One was saying that they had to bring in more young voters and put them in positions of responsibility. They could not just put them on a committee and brag about who they got, like the do with blacks. I thought WTF???? Did he really say that?? Did they really applaud?? Can they even hear themselves? I would say that they need to take a good look at themselves in the mirror, but they do not seem to cast a reflection.

Excellent Steve, and right on. When they can sit around and laugh when President Dufus jokes about no WMD at a press dinner…..the WMD he KNEW were not there and fomented as a pretext for his phony Halliburton war….then you know they have no real minds, hearts or values. Who laughs at the ‘missing’ WMDs that have caused so much death and destructions. These people and their follows and propagandists like Rush/Coulter are monsters. No different from the slash and burn crusaders.

Margo, So glad to have the beautiful face and sensibilities and wisdom here. Laura Bush showing her typical lack of class by not accomodating the next president at Blair House. A Texas Hick to very the end.

Suzanne, Off topic just a little. Read if you haven’t already, Vanity Fair’s article, “An Oral History of the Bush White House”. It is good and it is in the current issue. I read it on the internet. I don’t know how long it will remain available so don’t doddle if you are interested. Bev.

Another interesting little article was the interview with President and Mrs. Bush in People last week. President Bush said the most anxious time he ever had in 8 years of being President was when he had to throw out the first pitch at the World Series. I think that says it all….

I agree with you about Blair House, how petty. Nobody can find out what or who is using it, but I would think the President-Elect and his family, considering they had to be in town for the girls to start school, should definitely have taken priority… for security reasons at the very least. However, have you heard that Laura Bush’s spokesperson stated, “The Bush’s have GRACIOUSLY invited the Obama’s to use Blair House on January 15th.” The only thing worse than being UNgracious is pretending to be gracious about it! DeB….This might be the skinniest bone I’ll ever pick, but I take bigtime offense with this latest from Gaffe-ville…..”Gracious” is what I call a “gift word”….That is, “You don’t go tellin’ that on yourself….” Even if it came from a staffer/spokesperson and not Ms. Bush herself, it was careless and it did have the appearance of being Ms. Bush’s comment….Didn’t Lee Atwater invent that “rule” that perception=fact…or somesuch……Actually, there was not a nickel’s worth of this bone left after Maddow and Olbermann got finished with it!

Precisely an Atwater stance; however, the first lady must have control over how she is perceived. But, do any of “them” care? So, it’s best we chalk this also up to Karma, and let them move on in life.
