Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Mary Lou, I don’t think the Bushes are representative of Texans like Molly Ivins, Gov Richardson, Liz Smith, Senator Benson, Lady Bird Johnson, most of Austin and San Antonio, etc. etc. I think they are representative of the kind of tacky Texans that would pull such a trick and in total keeping with who they are. For instance like Barbara Bush who said on Good Morning America about her son’s debacle in Iraq, “Why should I bother my beautiful mind about body bags and body counts. I mean how relevant is it?” The sociopath doesn’t fall too far from the rotten family tree. Can’t wait for the moving vans.

AND, me! Please do not omit Sarah Weddington, and the only multi-term congressperson I’d permit, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (Austin), my dear friend Annette Strauss (whom I miss more with each passing day), Luci Baines Johnson, and our beloved Barbara Jordan, and many, many, other fine Texans all who know how to function in a social setting, with impeccable manners (http://www.utexas.edu/gtw/directory.php?C=all) - granted, some just do not have the knowledge or the stamina, methinks. But, there is no excuse for such “faux pas” in the White House. The president-elect’s family comes first, and Laura knew that, too. Although I’m a naturalized Texas, I have to inject here that Laura Bush does not have a history of social acumen in any area. It’s just not been her life with “The Hedge.” Perhaps she decided “back in Midland” to merely go no further, but there are plenty of books on the subject, and people who may be employed to cover her social acumen. “He” wanted to act like a cowboy and right-wing conservative to be elected. Ok, he did it, but nothing excuses Laura from her actions in this regard, even if she was told to “do it.”

Carol J, BARBARA JORDAN!!! Oh…..what a fabulous woman. As beautiful as Coulter is ugly. Today Laura announced a $450K++ for new dishes for the White House….I certainly hope those were a GIFT of the Bushes [I won;t hold my breathe] and NOT taxpayer $$…. When Jackie bought stemware for State Dinners….she purchased simple, inexpensive but attractive pieces from W VA knowing that then ordinary Americans could afford them and boost W VA’s economy….she’d been so upset by the poverty she saw there during the campaign and thought it was a sustaining way to help. And when she did the WH tour specifically held up those glasses…and they were sell outs. She also did paintings for UNICEF Christmas cards knowing that they would be sell outs too. Oh well, we have Laura’s nicotine patch turkey recipe.

Did Jackie do that? Glasses. Gosh, that’s so great to know. She seems to have been so thoughtful about everything she did.

Thank you, Carmel … wondrous, knowing, unpretentious, capable people encourage us. I was once very close to a legend, a woman who’s spouse was the first naval architect in the US, who certainly needed no advising on “decorum.” However, as a young wife and new mother, in addition to my own upbringing, taught me a great deal about the finer things in life and the common sense that must be carried forth with them, as did Jackie. Eloquence, and fine manners are not about money, they’re about courtesy, common sense, and self-esteem that enables love for oneself and others; hence, others feel valued. For one, this grand woman taught me that “Sheffield” was as lovely as silver flatware, it has the same amount of silver in it, yet far less expensive. This wondrous mentor, who loved my babies, as well as me, also had an incredible collection of Sandwich Glass. One day when I went to help her with one of her usual luncheons for “the wives” I noticed the enormous table set with her collection. Meeting her in the 2nd pantry of their home, I cautioned her about “laying out” her precious items with such a large group (I had already had such items “lifted” from my own small affairs), whereupon she motioned for me to follow her. We entered another, smaller pantry where she showed me more of the “collection,” and told me, kindly, “This is laid out on the table, dear … these are from the 5 & 10… the collection is still in the locked cases… let them help themselves if they need one.” In that regard, to this day I deeply regret my youthful ignorance about the wishes of the the those older and wiser than me. My regret for failing to accept one of her last wishes (before she returned to her homeland) still exists. This wondrous mentor/friend phoned one day and asked me to go by for “some tea and a talk” - when I arrived at their home in Cambridge, her plans to return to her homeland were laid out for me “before others hear … ” and she wanted me to have her Sandwich glass collection, and select paintings done by her deceased husband from around their home where they all were on display. As soon as I protested, this grand dame told me that it was time for her to die …no, she was not ill, but she believed her time on earth was completed, and that was her intention. My career had been focused on saving lives, so this news hit me at the core of my being … could I do something for her, should I, shouldn’t I - someone’s last wishes?? I was horrified; stricken with grief and disbelief, and could not accept such gifts. For several weeks she tried to nudge me out of my determined denial; it did no good, yet her lesson was about love — and facing fear (as Pema Chodron writes, “Fear is a natural reaction to moving closer to the truth. If we commit ourselves to staying right where we are, then our experience becomes very vivid. This becomes very clear when there is nowhere to escape.” Within 3 weeks of her arrival “at home” I was informed of her passing. (I have ‘heard’ from her since … and continue to add lines to my memoir about her.)

Wow Carol…..You lived in Cambridge? Are you actively writing all about her now? When do you think you’ll finish the project…sounds very interesting. Love to read things like that…sounds like a wonderful woman. Lucky you. And lucky her too that you had that appreciation and sensibilites…most just sleepwalk and don’t notice…or see without comprehension. This reminds me of some of the short stories in Jhumpa Lahiri’s ‘Interpreter of Maladies’ love that book have read it several times. She won the Nobel Prize and think it was her first book. Have you read it? Excellent. Thanks for that!

I have maintained a “lifeline” in which I interject memories as they come up; many piqued by my close contact with h.s. chums back in Mi who share memories with me quite often. Such exchanges leech out the deepest memories one can imagine. So, with each decade in a folder on my computer, I enter items per year, and build on them when I start to write an article, etc. One such is my close relationship with Edna Gardener White, my flight instructor. Oh, what I know … ~ I promised her I would “hold it” until she had passed on. Another is a fine memento about a great scientist at MIT and his loving wife, who tolerated the most horrific trip with our first born one can ever imagine. I dearly loved the MIT faculty “back then,” (and Harvard’s too).

Perhaps, in this day and age, it’s time to polish it off, but I’m old now, so “submissions” for publication bore me, preferring contracts instead. tut.

Are you a writer? I would love to be able to make a living from writing. It’s one of my passions. Just a point, but I believe that there is no such thing as old. Only “older” exists. Its more conceptual and teaches us that age is not something we judge each other by. Even a child is “older” each day. Maturity, humour, intellect, demeanor, wisdom are all up for debate however. :)

One ekes a living by writing, unless employed as such, and even then one must be honored by oneself. Now, even the term independent is in transition. I cannot keep up with labels. I’ve enjoyed writing children’s stories, too - even donated one to Dobrans (Grandma’s Last Halloween), which was bound, and sent to grandchildren one Hallowed Eve … I do hate that holiday, in fact. I’m now working on one about “The Tumbleweed Family” that incorporates science with the fictional family dashing about before winter arrives - I first envisioned the book as I gently touched my brakes in Lubbock several years ago, to permit 5 tumbleweeds to cross the busy intersection in front of me. See, I’m bloomin’ nuts. (But, a bookstore is waiting with bated breath for it to come out - poor people, I’m stuck right now - only by other commitments.) Hugs … All kids are gifted – some just open their packages earlier than others.

I completely disagree with all of you. Every one of you needs to take a breath and put an end to the vitriol. P.E. Obama said it himself, “There is but one President at a time.” The current administration has every right to make use of Blair House and the White House until their tenure is up. In today’s Washington Post, it was reported that among the various previously scheduled events, Protocol Chief Nancy Brinker is hosting a reception for Global Cultural Initiative members, 80 of whom are in the diplomatic corps, and that former Australian Prime Minister John Howard will be an overnight guest. These are long-planned events. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2009/01/06/blair_house_myster… I think, whether you like them or not, the Bush family has acted in a very gracious manner toward the Obamas. It’s not the Obamas turn yet. They’ll be there before you know it.

After Jackie Kennedy’s husband’s head was blown off in her lap….she was extremely apologetic to LBJ for holding over slightly in the WH while making plans; the Kennedy’s did not have a home in WDC and Caroline was a student in the WH school that Jackie started for her and other young children of WH employees. Despite this MASSIVE trauma, Mrs. Kennedy planned a four day state funeral, received guests from around the world, planned and attended her son’s 4th B-day party, went to Hyannis for Thanksgiving [the murder of her husband happened Thanksgiving week] and to be with the family. Returned to WDC to show Mrs. Johnson around the WH in all the private areas and help her become oriented. She sorted out JFK’s belongings personally presenting mementos to his staff and friends that were so despondent, including the Secret Service agents like Clint Hill who was so bereft that he’d let her down. She sat up late into the night to write letters to world leaders she’d met, including to the premier of Russia, then our ‘enemy’ to thank him for his words of condolences and for news reports that his wife had cried. She arranged for housing in Georgetown, and then wrote all the WH staff personal thank yous and met with each of them. She accomplished all of that and the transition, writing LBJ a gracious letter for letting them stay a short while, and was out of the WH in under two weeks despite all of those logistics. Her final act was to leave Lady Bird Johnson a bouquet and a note “Don’t be afraid of this house…you will be happy here…I was.” THAT’s a lady. Laura Bush is not. And not just for this latest tacky move. She is married to a mass murderer.

This thread is not about Jackie Kennedy — and I can assure you there were many who did not idolize her husband nor bought into the Camelot myth she created. Mrs. Bush is unequivocably a lady. She, in fact, has been a very popular first lady — liked by even those, who didn’t care for her husband and his administration. It’s time to give it a rest.
