Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Bonnie Much ado about nothing. If the Obamas knew there would not be room for them and their entourage in the White House until January 20th, then maybe they should have stayed in Chicago. Have the kids tutored for two weeks if there is a fear of the little girls falling way behind in their studies. But no, we have to have drama. We have to have more Bush bashing — now Laura Bush. I noticed not much was said about Hillary’s little political maneuver, but I guess it’s standard fare and expected.

Marjorie, You must not have children. Moving to a new city and starting a new school in the middle of the year is hard enough. Having the media spotlight on them, even harder. To suggest that they get tutored for a few weeks (how do you quickly set that up with a qualified tutor who understands the cirriculum, etc. while also planning a move to the White House??) and then start school would be ulcer generating to most children. Those two girls may look very happy and easy going on the outside, but they are just like any other children. Getting into a routine, having predictability and stability are very important. That’s a lot to put on a couple of kids. I am proud that the Obamas made them a priority and found a way to get them started at their new school after the Christmas break. Just too bad that it is costing me and all taxpayers a bundle because the Bush’s couldn’t be bothered to make other arrangements for whatever they wanted to do with the Blair House. To me this is one of those things “polite” people do…find a way to give a person you don’t like a big stab in the back while you are smiling publicly. “Oh, so sorry we can’t accommodate you.”

Barbara: You must not have children. I do have children, two of them all grown with children of their own. I would never have wanted to pull them out of school and relocate them — that can be quite traumatizing especially as they get older. But the Obama kids will be going to a very select private school where everyone, children and staff, are going to go out of their way to make these kids welcome to the nth degree. Extra help? You bet, although I doubt that the Obama girls need it because they are coming from a special private school already. I am sure the staff at the old school has done everything to make the transition seamless. These tony schools are not to be compared with public fare or even parochial fare. These girls will be treated like little princesses. Two weeks couldn’t make a difference here, except to give the kids an extra two weeks vacation. A tutor, in this case, would just keep the kids amused. As for costing the taxpayers a bundle for Obama’s accomodations, have you seen the automobile that’s been built especially for him? And what do you think that is costing for not one but three of them. When it comes to taxpayers carrying the burden, it’s a let-them-eat-cake attitude no matter whose administration is occupying the White House. As I’ve said somewhere else on this string, it’s one more thing to criticize, but also much ado about nothing. Moving to a new city and starting a new school in the middle of the year is hard enough.

Oops. The last paragraph is a copy from your comments that I forgot to backspace out. Really slipping in my old age, here.

Barbara Do you mean the type of stability children are reassured with when their father is home with them and not gone for 18 months running for the presidency? That kind of stability. Or when they were on the road with him moving from place to place in a constant keep-up-with the schedule pressure? I would prefer that the taxpayer does not have to pick up the tab for the hotel, but do we know if they are worried about it?

Bonnie And now they are really getting into the conspiracy theories.

A true Texan would have made Blair House available. A “hick” would share his own home. Bush’s rudeness is just his inability to relate to the needs of other people. Please don’t confuse this with being a Texan.

As for Senator Clinton helping a constituent, people, get a civics lesson. That is exactly what every member of Congress would do. And the constituent gave a check to the Clinton Foundation—well, he couldn’t give that much to her in the form of a campaign contribution but constituents do give campaign contributions, too. It is called access. And that it how this and any previous member of Congress does business. She did nothing wrong. Your understanding of the system as it really is is wrong. If you don’t like it, get your Congress member to pass legislation banning campaign contributions and a law that specifically prevents a spouse in public life or politics from benefiting from a member of Congress’ actions.

Jaye, Thank you for that explanation. Love seeing the pearls, too.

Sorry Jaye I don’t buy the rationalization. I like Hillary Clinton, but too many slippery money deals. I wonder if it was the democrats on Obama’s team who divulged the info or the republicans. We shall see.

Well, on the news tonight the answer as to who was occupying Blair house so the Obamas couldn’t stay there was given. It is being used at that time by the former prime minister of Australia, who could easily have stayed at a hotel. Blair House has 35 rooms and high security. This reeks of more than rudeness.

i m, didn’t you know that the former prime minister was a conservative who backed the war all eternity may call bush’s war? in the world of son of a bush, conservatives are gentlemen no matter how full their pockets are stuffed with the people’s money, and obama is “barack the magic negro.”

Mary Lou, Given Bush’s ‘sense of humor’ i.e. making jokes about no WMD at the expense of over 4,000 dead US troops for his lies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKX6luiMINQ I imagine that he is convulsing on the floor over “barack the magic negro”

Hi I M. According to the Washington Post, the Blair house has “119 Rooms, 70,000 Square Feet and One Lucky Australian” and he merely an overnight visitor. However, it also reports that there will be a tea and some parties there … Jeesh. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/06/AR200901
