Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

I don’t need instructions from you. That you believe Laura Bush is a lady is your opnion, I cannot reconcile ‘lady’ and ‘married to a mass mudering idiot sociopath’. The point is that under extreme duress Jackie actually acted like a lady and in a manner that held the country together and as General deGaulle said, “Showed the world how to behave.” Laura Bush has just shown once again why she also raised too drunken self centered party girls. With the Bushes it’s all about them. A lady would have made other arrangements for the incoming president…as I am sure Jackie would have done. We never saw JFK, JR and Caroline in a photo like this, nor, I doubt sincerely we will ever see the Obama daughters in a photo like this either: http://www.mydogella.com/jenna1.jpg But then, those two families have class…and the Bushes do not. Including making the Obama’s family and the nation’s new president’s transition much more convoluted and difficult and more expensive for taxpayers….and when, certainly there are options. Moving vans can’t get here fast enough.

I am with you! “Moving vans can’t get here fast enough.” !! I will drive my car over and load up the trunk for them if it will make it any faster… they’ve overstayed their welcome by 8 years.

Gracious or no, I think the White House is in need of fumigation prior to its new tenants moving in.

I agree completely. Jackie was a wonderful woman. I can’t think of anything she did in her life that isn’t an excellent example for the rest of us I am sure she would have found a way to share the White House for any events planned at the Blair House, so the next Presidnet and his family could stay there. She treated everyone well, regardless of politics. Whenever i am unsure about how to handle something in my own life, I ask myself what my mother, and Jackie, would have done, and then I have the right answer.

Gianna, ROTFLMAO “And here I always thought that stood for what would Jesus do?” No, really there was even a book with terrific graphics, “What Would Jackie Do?” BTW, Hope all is well with your daughter.

Lucinda: …there were many who did not idolize her husband nor bought into the Camelot myth she created. Present. Camelot? What a fantasy.

Marjorie, isn’t that the truth? I read “America’s Queen” last summer; a biography of Jackie. She pretty much made a deal with the devil by marrying JFK because she was looking for a rich husband, and a lot of her closest friends tried to change her mind because of his bad reputation. He made Bill Clinton look like an altar boy and she wanted out even before he became president, but father Kennedy made her feel it was her responsibility to stick with him. She was certainly a fascinating and classy woman, but most of her decisions seem to have been made with regard to money first and foremost.

No, Marjoire…..it wasn’t a fantasy, It is that people cannot see in others what is not in them and you are a very sour woman.

Let us devoutly wish that being off thread never becomes a federal crime. It’s not a tragic moral flaw, either…..I guess it takes more focus and critical thinking than I can bring to bear to keep a conversation “linear” I count on a lot of others to do that…..Labyrinthine might not be so great, but spiral is what we seem to do a lot….Come around again and again but on a slightly higher plane each time…….

A joint study by the neuro institutes of UCLA/NYU revealed that people are born with a cognitive style for one party or the other. Those who need fixed boxes are Republicans. Those who can take in a lot of landscape and make cause and effect connections are progressives. It is not a surprise that the wingnuts are self-appointed police….you drew outside the lines!!! oooohhhhhh, I’ll tell Mom!

Suzanne, Again, you personalize it. Can you keep the conversation civilized and not insult those with whom we don’t agree. Once upon a time, I thought you might be an interesting person … why do you have to resort to pettiness? Can’t you engage in a conversation without it?

Why do you need to control……you started it giving instructions on what is appropriate. Get off the cross we need the wood.

Carmel….this is what I mean about “spiral”….it comes around again but notched up a bit….you and I, among others, have spoken about this before….I find it fascinating……My grandmother knew it all along….”They just cain’t help bein’ that way, darlin’….. Bless their little hearts…”
