Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Let us devoutly wish that being off thread never becomes a federal crime. It’s not a tragic moral flaw, either” —— not at all! ” spiral ” ——- can be very fun, especially if it’s a good chat. “Come around again and again but on a slightly higher plane each time…….” ——- provided the person you’re engaged with doesn’t bring it down with pettiness. It’s always interesting and often fun to “hear” other points of view … sometimes we learn from it, other times we’re entertained I think I’ve grown tired of this thread, however. The Obama family is doing well. The inauguration is around the corner and there seems to be less discord between the Hay Adams and the White House than there is on this thread. You are right — it’s a tempest in a teapot! :-)

Dear Frannie Em….I guess I was saying what would be my “druthers”…..I druther it’d be that way…. I couldn’t have been more mistaken..! Now that I think of it….a big spiral that goes the other way…down…..is something you might say is BORING…….. I have a friend who divorced her husband who sold equipment for the coal mining industry….She said she dumped him “because HE IS the original well-designed Horizontal Boring Machine……”

Souless, Evil B*tch you really are the embodiment of your name. Good to have the ability to see yourself in all your glory. LOL. Now it’s time to let the Bush years go and quit spreading your venom.

Thank you Lucinda, There are always at least two sides to every story. I think we would all be wise to remember that we never get the whole story. After all, it’s not like the Hay-Adams is a dump! It’s probably nicer than Blair House. Ya know…it was actually a bit tacky of the Obamas to invite themselves early.

Lee, I don’t think it has anything to do with being tacky. The way I see it, the Obamas needed to be in Washington by a certain date so that their daughters could start school — completely reasonable. Had Blair House been available, it would have made perfect sense for them to be housed there, but it wasn’t — so they are at the Hay Adams and will move over to BH on the 15th — end of story. Because the Obamas strike me as reasonable people, it doesn’t surprise me that they have made very little of it — certainly far less than many on this thread — (actually I haven’t heard anything negative come out of their camp) and they are going about their business. The only thing I don’t completely understand is that if BH has as many rooms as has been reported, why couldn’t the events and the Obamas have co-existed like they are co-existing with everything else that is probably going on at the Hay-Adams. We clearly don’t know the whole story — and does it matter that we don’t? probably not!

Lucinda, You’re right…as always, the voice of reason. I was just trying to get a rise out of some of our sisters. Good for them…they didn’t bite!

Lee, I don’t know if that’s always the case! :-) but, I try not to take the bait — it doesn’t make for a productive interchange and I’m not all that interested in polarizing patter. I’d rather consider the facts and recognize that we don’t always know the entire story. It would not surprise me, in this case, if a protocol officer was consulted.

Just want to say thanks to you, Lucinda, for a simple voice of reason and sensibility. After reading through that AC thread, I was taken back in time and felt like I was in junior high again; with the popular cheerleader types picking on the last kids picked for volleyball or something. I mean, these are women who have, at times, intimidated me with their intellect, and facts and figures, actually insulting one another about their looks and age, etc. And the funniest part of this is that a certain woman who seems to feel she is the epitome of everything class and ladylike is the one slipping and sliding through the sleaze. I am definitely what she would call “low class and uneducated,” but I’m not stupid, and I’m sure that people living on Nob Hill, let alone precious Jackie O, would not go around mudslinging as she has done. But some things never change. The popular kid can say anything and get away with it, which would explain why her “low class” put down of Laura Bush is prominently displayed, minus the “Texas hick,” if I’m not mistaken. Life cracks me up.

Gianna, If they want to put Ann Coulter on the site and her supporters defend her…you bet I’ll be there swinging so THAT is what is prominent when someone googles coulter. We’ve endured 8 years of HELL with this sleazy, criminal Bush family and their horrid supporters Rush/Savage/Coulter…you can bet I am going after them. They killed millions and destroyed the economy…no legitimate investigation of 911 after spending $72 million to investigate a blowjob?? Their phony christianity….and the putdowns of Jackie including that she is a bag of bones 6’ under. Republicans can dish it out as they have done for 8 HELLISH years….they just can’t take it. So cry on. If coultergeist appears I’ll be there with a sludgehammer.

Well, Carmel, I’m sorry to have had any part of this mud wrestling event. I guess it’s expected for women with passionate beliefs to have vastly different points of view, but this has all gotten so personal and junior high that I’m beginning to suffer from PTSD. I could just see certain groups of men reading through this s*** and high fiving one another that we didn’t end up with a woman president. And most of us are post menopausal, so we can’t blame PMS.

Sheesh some of you girls are such delicate flowers.

You’re so right Gianna — it’s exactly what men often say they abhor in women — the pettiness, the cattiness — and frankly, what we should abhor and not tolerate from each other.
