Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Uh, observation: how many men do you really know?

Carol — was that directed at me? I have always had lots of men in my life — family, friends, colleagues, husband — and I have a daughter whom I have tried to teach, as have my husband and son — and continue to stress all of the time — how important it is not to be catty or snarky — don’t personalize, don’t insult, no matter how tempting it can be — one can have a conversation without name-calling — stay clear of the mean girls and don’t become a mean girl or slip into their trap(s) — I think it is not one of our gender’s better traits — it’s often a power play by those who feel impotent — and it’s not respected by men, who too often hold the cards in the corporate world.

Thanks Gianna … she feels the need to judge or censor … and if you don’t go along with it, she insults you …she’s on over-drive, it makes me wonder how lonely and anger-filled her life is — it’s a shame.

Ann Coulter Crazy, Souless, Evil B*tch
Perhaps you don’t mind having our country hijacked by murderous theiving thugs for 8 years, destroying everything they touched…perhaps you are asleep, apathetic, unaware…who knows…..but I can’t stand the NeoCons or their supporters for what they’ve done and will express and your sanctimony is really tiresome. Don’t be ridiculous Lucinda and such a phony…I’ve NEVER reached out to you…YOU on the other hand emailed me….don’t worry about MY life it’s just fine….and gets better with each day we get closer to Jan 20th and with the fervent hope too that we see many in Bush Inc and their cheerleaders pay for their crimes. Hitler’s propagandist [like coulter/rush/savage] were sentenced at The Hague, too. And that’s what this entire criminal administration and Coulter, et al deserve.

Gianna You are so right, the Coulter thread got so immature. The funny thing is the person that was slamming her so much probably had more posts than anyone and it drove up the ticker to insure that they bring Ann Coulter back. I guess there is nothing like a good cat fight.

By having alot of comments attacking Coulter…when anyone googles her they’ll get those too. It’s the trick of the right…pile on with negativity…they just don’t like it when it’s done to them…even thiough THEY turned it into an industry….swiftboating. You can dismiss tactics as cat fighting…the fact is when coulter gets googled people get a balanced view instead of a love fest that it would be with her paid supporters that come for the day when she shows up to add to the handful of regressives that are here.

I know you believe that, and there are some that would be interested in this, but they will only read them if they decide to click on that particular link. Google has pages and pages of links for anything that is searched. I am sure there are hundreds of pages on Coulter. Many times people are looking for particular information so for someone to take endless hours to read repetitive information seems a little wishful on your part. Why would they do it? Most people are more interested in being heard than listening. What is entertaining to you may not be entertaining to them.

Lucinda, with sincere respect for your stance on this, it is not about who is president, it’s about decorum. The White House ill-advised Laura Bush, and perhaps she should have followed her own instincts on this - I hope so.

Carol, I hear what you’re saying, but we don’t know the whole story. I suspect that a protocol officer was probably consulted … and I think it’s much ado about nothing. We’ve all spent (myself included!) entirely too much time on this story.

Yah, we’ve suffered so much, and now have PTSD over the past 8 years, it’ll take all of us time to recover. Hopefully, we’ll be able to heal one another, too, as we do ourselves.

Margo - I’m delighted that you are becoming wOw’s advice columnist! Good, honest advice is hard to come by and I’m looking forward from more straightforward words from you that will knock us to our knees! As for the Bush administration’s refusal to allow the Obama family to stay in Blair House - this is just more proof that the Bushes are lowlife scum. They have no manners, and Laura Bush who has curried her reputation as a courteous and kind person, certainly tainted it by telling the Obamas to stay elsewhere and refusing to make public a list of supposed other Blair House bookings. I cannot wait until the Bushes recede into Texas wormwoodwork. True to form, PE and Mrs. Obama handled the snub with their usual graciousness. Thank goodness we will finally have a President with decorum in Washington DC come January 20th.
