Who Do You Think You're Talking To? by Margo Howard

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo! Margo will be joining us as wowOwow’s official advice columnist beginning January 29. We can’t wait!

I grew up hearing my mother say to me, the television newscasters or the newspaper she was holding: “Who do you think you’re talking to?” The translation of this would be roughly akin to saying, “What do you take me for, a fool?” Or, as a lot of people said, back in the day, “Tell it to Sweeney.” Now I find myself saying the exact same thing to television newscasters or the newspaper I am holding … and the subject is most always politics.

Example: Barack Obama and his family were denied early access to Blair House, the official government guest house within the White House blockade perimeter.  The about-to-be first family needed to come to Washington earlier than the usual time because the little girls were starting their new school on Monday, January 5.  Laura Bush’s office said Blair House could not be made available to them because there were “previously scheduled functions.” Mrs. Bush’s office was not forthcoming about what these functions might be. My guess is that they are farewell parties for the RNC and other Republicans leaving town. There was major stonewalling when press people inquired which people were booked for Blair House. The First Lady’s office would only say, “The space is not available until the traditional date, January 15, and arrangements cannot be changed.”

This situation was definitely a “Who do you think you’re talking to?” moment. As The New York Times pointed out, keeping the first family and their four security teams at a five-star hotel is out-of-this-world expensive … and at a time when the government is reduced to printing money, everybody and his dog is getting a “bailout” and the taxpayer is getting nicked for everything. At some point we will know who these previously scheduled people were, and then the question will be asked: Why were they not moved to one of the White House’s 132 rooms, or the State Department function rooms … or a hotel?

Then there is the recently uncovered information that, as a senator, Hillary Clinton smoothed the way for a New York state developer. When he got federal assistance and tax-exempt bonds for his project, Bill Clinton’s foundation received a check for $100,000. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman said, when pressed about this piece of information, that the senator would have done the same for anyone trying to get something done in the state of New York. To this explanation of amazingly coincidental timing I would simply ask, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Then, too, there is our vice president, Darth Vader, he of the curling lip, and the idiot Alberto Gonzales saying everything they did was to benefit the country – and that we’re better off for it! Interestingly, Don Rumsfeld is not saying much of anything. Bush is still blaming bum intelligence for everything, and, well, really, there is no other question to ask except, “Who do you think you’re talking to?”

Chris, I wanted to make sure to wish you a very happy new year! When you first started appearing here on wOw, you wrote something about family that I know a little something about and have ever since noticed (with appreciation) your posts. … Anyway, the very best to you and yours in the new year! — R.

Hey, Rocky! Thank you so much for that wish for the New Year. I hope your New Year is filled with good things too. I have high hopes for the year and despite the nasty weather here in Michigan, I’m enjoying 2009 already. I haven’t left behind the past and those family issues (That it sounds like we’ve both faced.), but I’m moving forward and enjoying life and following my passion for writing and enjoying it like loads.

I was a columnist for a local paper here, but I am also working on writing kid’s book too, why?

Just plain curiosity. No ulterior motive. Several regular posters on wOw are writers — one, I think, is writing a memoir. I take heart in knowing there are so many creative people here.

Chris, as a Wolverine by birth, I recognize your last name (writing is one of those things we take from our Mi education - I’m over-committed already this year). ;-)

You’re right on that writing thing with education here in Michigan! I have always written - well at least from second grade on, that is!

I certainly wish education in MI was as “it used to be… ” Throughout my life (including grad school) I was grateful for the basic education I received there - and, the importance of knowing who was writing, editing, and publishing everything that I read (for credibility, which today has flown out the proverbial window). It was a delight for me to learn over the holidays that a 3-1/2 year old granddaughter knows the names and companies of all of her extensive book collection - yes, her Mama taught her! If she is read a book, and does not yet know the information, she asks!

The pride in writing, reading and what you learned has gone out of our whole education system! Today we produce workers who don’t know how to enjoy good authors or writing real letters either. I’ve been working with my grandkids on reading and choosing books, and I do love some of the modern ones, Cornela Funke is one who is really fun to read! My oldest granddaughter and I try to read things together and talk about them…now that’s something they don’t encourage in schools anymore! They did at my school when I was a kid and because of that my grandmom and I shared quite a few books, and she when she traveled got me the best local author’s books (i.e. when she twraveled to Prince Edward Island brought me back the Anne books and pictures from her camera that made me feel like I was there!).

Frankly, I think it would be a great time for one of the anticipated “sleep overs” - I would have said, “Come on over! Bring your sleeping bags, we’ll make it work. Come on… just no pets, yet!” (Ask my now adult kids and friends, I’ve done that many times, and a happier person for it.)

Margo glad to hear from you- after a dose of Ann Coulter - You are breath of fresh air. I hate that statement -was used so much to describe you know who. Laura Bush the genteel southern lady - tsk tsk

Ann Coulter Crazy, Souless, Evil B*tch
Margo is like sitting in The Carlyle amid a profusion of Casablance Lilies, listening to Bobby Short and drinking Veuve Clicquot and laughing with amusing friends while going through your shopping bags of new purchases of Ralph Lauren goodies, and discussing dinner plans. Being subjected to Coulter is like taking the wrong turn on a bitterly cold and stormy night in Transylvania when you are starving, thirsty, and need to find a bathroom and instead wind up with a dead battery, flat tire and a out of range cell phone in an old cemetary and a rapid bat flies into your car window…and you scream and run out and fall into a pile of dung. Yup. that describes a visit from Coulter to a T.

Golly, I can’t wait to read your book, Suzanne. I am laughing about being in Transylvania; thank you for a good dose of humor. By the way, have you ever read a J. Peterman catalog? Your first paragraph is reminiscent of his descriptions of the beautiful and almost period clothes he sells in the catalog. http://jpeterman.com/product~cat~110203~sku~WSK%203081.asp Yes, there really is a J. Peterman and he lives here in Lexington, Ky. I thought of his clothes when I read the part about the Carlyle and the profusion of Casa Blanca Lilies.

there really IS a J. Peterman?? LOL! and man… i LOVE THAT JACKET. you just inadvertently exposed me to a bad bad thing… :)

Yes, Chrome, J. Peterman has lived here in Lexington for years; may be from here for all I know. His catalogs are wonderful just to read. I have several Peterman pieces that I have worn for years because they are an investement and never go out of style. I think when he had his retail stores, one was in NYork and Seifeld thought the name was comical, so incorporated it into his show(with Peterman’s permission). When the retail stores went out of business, he went online exclusively. He got his start by selling the barn coat in the New Yorker Magazine years ago, and it is still a best seller. His clothes for women are divine, and I urge you to order the catalog to be sent to your home now. Incidentally, with all the money and fame he has acquired, he still lives in the same house he did 20 years ago.
