Margo Howard Asks: If McCain Succeeds With the Palin Maneuver, What's Next?

Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled — and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!

This election is not a face-off between Democrats and Republicans anymore, but a showdown between decency and manipulation. Why, exactly, is Sarah Palin rising in the polls and creating such a sensation? And what, precisely, are the McCain followers impressed by? The Republican faithful answer: She’s beautiful, she’s tough, she’s gutsy. So? She is, more importantly, inexperienced and from a nowhere state with extremely different conditions than the lower 48. This very good-looking woman who sounds like she’s right out of “Prairie Home Companion” has caused Republicans (who don’t particularly care for McCain) to go wild with enthusiasm. My question is: What kind of moronic electorate votes for people who “excite” them? They say they are “energized.” But you might ask yourself why, and about what? This is a woman who is an affirming presence for those who believe the Bible is our actual history and that Darwin was wrong, but we are talking about the government here, not a Fundamentalist elementary school.

If the Republicans were to be honest, with any concern for the common good, they never would have picked someone who was merely surprising, different and a babe. They call it a “bold choice.” Cynical is more like it, and rather insulting, if you think about it, to the perceived intelligence of their base. Do you think for a minute that a qualified Republican woman like Kay Bailey Hutchison could have caused this commotion, where women would run out to buy the same glasses she wears and start wearing their hair the way she does? And the McCain handlers have the nerve to talk about celebrity worship? Who in hell wants the focus on the No. 2? (Well, maybe an old guy with a dicey health history.)

If the Republicans were to be honest ... they never would have picked someone who was merely surprising, different and a babe.

Much of our citizenry has turned some loony corner where, were they told she belonged to a coven and drank blood , either wouldn’t believe it or they wouldn’t care. John McCain has mockingly picked a running mate who is now walking the red carpet as Queen for a Day, and who appears to have trademarked the word “lipstick.”

I have a radical idea: Ignore the promises we’re hearing. Ignore everybody’s promises. They don’t mean dick. Go with the man you think is a clear thinker, dedicated and able; not just someone who so desperately wants to be president that he will gimmick up the ticket, even at the cost of subordinating himself to the No. 2. If he succeeds with this crass maneuver, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

If the topic does interest you, you might also want to go to http://www.factcheck.org/specialreports188.html, where you’ll find “False Ads: There Oughta Be A Law! - Or Maybe Not,” that basically says free speech means anything goes in a campaign … Federal Communications Act (U.S. Code: Title 47, Sec. 315. - Candidates for public office)
(a) … If any licensee shall permit any person who is a legally qualified candidate for any public office to use a broadcasting station, he shall afford equal opportunities to all other such candidates for that office in the use of such broadcasting station: Provided, That such licensee shall have no power of censorship over the material broadcast under the provisions of this section …

Kudos Margo! Well said. It is as if you jumped in my head and pulled out my very thoughts. Her length of service for me is not an issue, it is the manner in which she has led and her admitted beliefs on various subjects. This is where it is clear she and Sen. Obama diverge. This is a woman that admits she “doesn’t like or have time to concern herself with Middle East affairs” Huh? I don’t have children, am not married nor am I the Governor of a state, but I recognize that the U.S. is not an island. It is a necessity for me to know what goes on all over the world because what happens on the other side of the planet will in one way or another affect me (and the U.S.) As every day ticks by, more and more skeletons are spilling out of her closet. Yet know one seems to care. The Republicans are so fixated on the fact they have their very own “Obama” they don’t want to hear the truth. Look how pretty she is….listen to how down home and warm she is…..she’s just like me, a hockey mom, awww…….. Never once stopping to pay attention to the fact she has financially mismanaged the state’s funds, earmarks, lied about accomplishments and is currently under serious investigation for misuse of power in office. If any of these issues were at play for Barack Obama his numbers of support would be nil. Yet she is getting away with it and I think Margo is dead on to ponder the question, why?

No Kill and Drill Palin
Belinda, I think: 1) The corporatocracy wants McCain/Palin because they can be controlled, they’ll be drilling in Alaska immediately, and if McCain were to have an ‘untimely’ accident…there would be a total puppet in the Oval Office who’d keep the religious right extremist stirred up…always good for cover…and she’s war crazy. The military/industrial/oil/media complex is having a collective wet dream. This is a Disney movie. Hockey Mom goes to Washington….except Hockey Mom is a deranged easily led zealot. 2) She could be the Oct Surprise….keep everything off kilter (Doctrine of Chaos—Rove’s fav) until the last moment….then oh, darn, indicted for her crimes in AK and Romney or Christine Whitman steps in on say, Oct 31. That’s a good reason for all the Dem leaders to come out and hammer on McCain who isn’t looking so hot. Including on his irresponsible choice for VP. Maybe Biden needs to have to step down to for HRC…little health problem. That could be Obama’s Oct surprise. It’s going to be 56 or days of one scary-a$$ lunar roller coaster ride…that’s for sure.

Thank you, Margo, for this wonderful article. Loved the part about how he will “gimmick up the ticket” to get what he wants. In my view, this whole thing is getting pretty scary. What happened to reason? What happened to focusing on the issues? Palin, unfortunately, appears to be a cross between Paris Hilton and Dick Cheney. Very scary, indeed.

No Kill and Drill Palin
Susan, OK we have the week’s winning line right here, “Palin, unfortunately, appears to be a cross between Paris Hilton and Dick Cheney” funny and absolutely correct.

To anyone who is confused about the manipulation in the Republican Party, I gladly refer you to the following address: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=184086&title=Sarah… I watched McCain on The View this morning and was stunned by the level of judgmental hatred he represents. Barbara, Joy and Whoopi were really terrific and nailed him a couple of times. If you need to catch a laugh about this (to take you away from your anger for a minute or two) please check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3-B7bLbzOM We actually wrote it BEFORE seeing Palin’s horrifying performance on ABC last night…we had no idea how close to reality we were! The earlier comparison to a high school cheerleader is right on…with a little bit of “pageant girl answering an important question” thrown in for good measure.

Was the McCain episode of The View a repeat, or a new one? I know he was on a few months back…if there was another one, I’m gonna be super pissed I missed that! Whoopi is capable of nailing anyone who is out of line with the tone of her voice alone, which oozes pure RATIONALISM.

It was new, he was on this morning. Check out these videos on the Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/12/mccain-grilled-on-the-vie_n_125…

Wow, thank you for that link - those clips were INTENSE to watch. I was squirming every second. Gotta hand it to him, though, that he had the *ahem* to appear on that show…AGAIN! “Do I need to worry about becoming a slave again?” - WHOOA, I seriously had to rewind that to make sure I heard it right! I love Whoopi.

I have never seen them that tough and direct. They, like the rest of us, must be very fed up with the way McCain is running his campaign, his choice of VP and the fact that they won’t allow her to even be questioned without it being a highly controlled, edited situation.

DeB—-This is SERIOUSLY scary to have McBush sit there and INSIST in his answer to Whoopi re separation of Church and State that “‘Judeo-Christian” values were THE FOUNDATION iof the US.” That is so FALSE that you wonder what kind of an idiot is he. The Framers could not have been more clear. Most of them were Deitists [ akin to natural religion] and made strong statements that “This is in no way a Christian nation.’ They FLED religious tyranny and knew all the dangers of it. These people are so stupid it is frightening.

They all looked shocked that he would keep repeating that. And I doubt very much that he expected to actually be grilled today! He came equipped with his spin and talking points and was completely off guard when he encountered the rarest of all things in the American “news” culture…. the follow up question.

Suzanne, I live in the Bible Belt where most people really think and children are taught that this is a Christian nation. They say Judeo-Christian nowdays, but just because the Jews got noisy about it. YOu ought to see the letters to the editor talking about deists and humanism, which I think is the cardinal sin of the world. What’s worse is secular humanism, whatever that is. By the way, I have been reading the Washington Quarterly, and decided to share this article on the transition after the election. It does mention the change in the roll of the VP since Mondale. http://www.twq.com/08autumn/docs/08autumn_campbell.pdf
